Covenant Health is Canada’s largest faith-based provider of healthcare, serving twelve communities across Alberta. Covenant Health has been a leader in palliative care since opening its first hospital-based palliative care program at the Edmonton General Hospital in 1985. The program grew out of an identified need for more holistic, multi-disciplinary approaches, and better understanding of the complex and evolving nature of pain. Building on this expertise, the Palliative Institute will respond to the growing need for end of life care in the province, ensuring patients facing serious and complex illnesses have access to a full and comprehensive spectrum of coordinated health services. The Institute will focus on palliative care from a terminal diagnosis to end of life needs through: Education: promoting palliative and end of life care learning and education. Research: developing knowledge through research. Clinical Support: influencing clinical practices based on leading practice to improve the quality and comprehensiveness of palliative and end of life services. Administrative Support: providing resources and expertise to enhance development, implementation and evaluation of palliative end of life programs. Public Outreach: developing and strengthening partnerships and engaging communities in support of palliative and end of life care. Covenant Health is privileged to walk with patients and families on their most diffi cult journey as they face the realities of a terminal illness or losing a loved one to illness.

Covenant Health is Canada’s largest fa i th-based provider of healthcare, serving twelve communit ies across Alberta .

Covenant Health has been a leader in palliative care since opening its fi rst hospital-based palliative care program at the Edmonton General Hospital in 1985. The program grew out of an identifi ed need for more holistic, multi-disciplinary approaches, and better understanding of the complex and evolving nature of pain.

Building on this expertise, the Palliative Institute will respond to the growing need for end of life care in the province, ensuring patients facing serious and complex illnesses have access to a full and comprehensive spectrum of coordinated health services.

The Institute will focus on palliative care from a terminal diagnosis to end of life needs through:

Education: promoting palliative and end of life care learning and education.

Covenant Health delivers palliative care services through our health facilities and into surrounding communities. Even with the excellent care currently in place, patients will benefi t from a strong centre of excellence to help lead developments in palliative services and support delivery of care in our communities.

Today, Covenant Health has 81 palliative and hospice beds across the province.

With your help Caritas Foundation has raised $3 million over the last two years.

We still have another $2 million to raise over the next two years to reach our goal of $5 million for the Palliative Institute.

Covenant Health is Canada’s largest fa i th-based provider of healthcare, serving twelve communit ies across Alberta .

We need your support.Quality end-of-life care is important to all Albertans. Each year, Covenant Health is privileged to walk with patients and families on a difficult journey, as they face the realities of a terminal illness or losing a loved one to illness. Providing quality care at end of life is at the heart of our mission to serve with compassion, uphold the sacredness of life in all stages, and care for the whole person— body, mind and soul.

The number of Albertans who will require these services is expected to increase by 33% by the year 2020. In response to this growing need, Covenant Health is working to enhance its leadership role through a comprehensive Palliative Care and End of Life Strategy.

This includes operating a Palliative Institute. Located at Grey Nuns Community Hospital, the Institute brings experts together to focus on research, programs, planning and education.

Through this closely linked network of people, Covenant Health is improving efforts to deliver palliative and end of life care across Alberta.

Your support will ensure all patients and families—no matter where they live in Alberta—have access to the support and holistic care they need when facing the challenges of living with life-threatening illness, and the comfort measures they need at the end of life.

Covenant Health’s campaign is to raise $12 million to create this new Institute. Caritas Foundation’s commitment is $5 million of funding.
