INTRODUCTION:INTRODUCTION:
A printer is an output device that produces text andgraphics on paper.
The printed output is generally referred to as
hardcopy.
In addition, a few modern printers can directly
interface to electronic media such as memory card,or to image capture devices such as digital camera.

IMPACT PRINTERIMPACT PRINTER
An impact printer
has mechanisms
resembling those
of a typewriter. It forms characters
or images by striking
a mechanism such
as a print hammer or wheel against an
inked ribbon, leaving an
image on paper.

DOT MATRIX PRINTERDOT MATRIX PRINTER
These printers contain a print head whichmoves horizontally usually from left toright and right to left or vertically across
the paper.
The print head contains an array of pins
which strikes against an inked ribbon toform a pattern of dots on paper .
Dot-matrix printers print about 40-300
characters per second (cps).

Each dot is produced by a tiny metal rod, also
called a "wire" or "pin", which is driven forward
by the power of a tiny electromagnet or
solenoid, either directly or through small levers.
Such printers would have either 7,9,18 or 24
pins on the print head. 24-pin print heads were
able to print at a higher quality.

Daisy wheel printers are impact printers invented in
1969.
They were used in e-typewriters, word processor &
computer systems in1972.
They offer high printing quality .They can print 20-80characters per second .
They are found in only electronic type writers ..Their
printing speed depends upon the type of print wheel

Impact PrintersImpact Printers
ADVANTAGES
They are used to make several carbon copies
at a time .
They are of low cost .They are good , reliable in those situations
where printing is more important than quality.
DISADVANTAGES
They are noisy .
They can only print lower resolution graphics.

Nonimpact PrintersNonimpact Printers
Non-impact printers, used
almost everywhere now,
are faster and quieter
than impact printers
because they have
fewer moving parts.
Nonimpact printers form
characters and images
without direct physical contact between the
printing mechanism and the paper.

1. INKJET PRINTERS1. INKJET PRINTERS
The inkjet printer was invented in 1976 .
Ink-jet printers spray small, electrically chargeddroplets of ink from four nozzles through holes
at high speed onto paper.
Ink-jet printers can print in color and are quieterand much less expensive than a color laser printer. However, they are slower and print in 300 ² 720dpi resolution range.
TYPES OF NON- IMPACT PRINTERS

ContdContd««.««.
Desktop inkjet printers, as used in offices or at
home, tend to use aqueous inks based on a
mixture of water, glycol and dyes or pigments.
A typical ink-jet printer provides a resolution of
300 dots per inch, although some newer models
offer higher resolutions.

2. LASER PRINTER2. LASER PRINTERThe first Laser Printer was HP LASERJET
,released in March ,1984.
Laser printers are non-impact printers which
can print text and images in high speed and
high quality resolution, ranging from 600 to1200 dpi.
A single color laser printer can produce 4-16pages in a minute
Laser printers have built-in R AM chips to
store documents output from the computer .
To manage graphics and complex page
design lasers printers uses page descriptionlan ua e software.

ADVANTAGESThey are faster than other printers .
They are quiet in operation .
They are useful in graphical presentation .These printers tend to have a longer life span.
DISADVANTAGESBecause of their print quality, speed they are more
expensive than other printers.

OTHER TYPE OF PRINTERSOTHER TYPE OF PRINTERS
LCD/LED Printers
They are electro photographic printers that are identical to laser
printers in most ways. Both LCD and LED printers use a light
source instead of a laser to create an image on a drum. The print
process is almost identical, but LED printers use Light Emitting
Diodes to charge the drum, and the other uses Liquid Crystals.
These printers produce a very high quality text and graphics print
out.
Network printer
Network printer is a printer that provides output capabilities to all
network users.
Plotters
They are large-scale printers that are very accurate at reproducing line
drawings. They are commonly used for technical drawings such as
engineering drawings or architectural blueprints.

Thermal printers
Thermal printers use direct thermal method by pushing
electrically heated pins against heat-sensitive paper.
Photo printers
Photo printers are color printers that produce photo lab
quality pictures on photo paper.
All in one printers
It is a machine that includes several functionalities
including printer, scanner, copier and fax.
