Pali eLearning Program (100% Distance Learning) FALL 2020
PCHS eLearning Program (Distanced Learning) Objectives
1. Meeting the learning needs of students
Maintain academic excellence and quality learning time.
Address learning loss due to absence from school
2. Maintain the health and safety of our school community
3. Provide support for students and families
PCHS eLearning Program:
1. PCHS will use Infinite Campus for roll taking purposes.
2. PCHS will use Schoology as its main platform for class engagement and
grading.
3. Teachers will continue to provide instruction through a variety of modes,
including collaborative face to face discussions (Zoom/BigBlueButton/Google
Meet/Teams), viewing videos, web-based assignments, Schoology apps for
assignments, and class activities.
4. PCHS academies (Virtual Academy and Pali Academy) will continue to use
Accelerate and Accelus as delivery platforms.
PCHS eLearning Terms:
PCHS eLearning is Distance Learning. Distance Learning is instruction in which the student and instructor are in different locations and students are under the general supervision of a certificated employee of PCHS. THIS IS NOT the same as independent study.
Synchronous vs. Asynchronous Instruction: Teachers would be required to do a daily minimum of 15 mins of
facetime and 15 min synchronous according to the following definitions:
Synchronous Instruction shall be defined as a student or a group of students engaged in learning at the
same time using technology that allows the teacher and student to connect in real-time to deliver:
a. Timely actionable feedback to students.
b. Direct instruction to students through video conferencing.
c. Recorded video lessons posted online produced by the teacher.
d. Teacher guided peer-to-peer learning.
e. Whole or small-group instruction.
Asynchronous Instruction shall be defined as:
a. Learning done on students’ own time or schedule.
b. Students work independently.
c. Self-guided instructional modules.
d. Discussion, emails or chats that aren’t happening in real time.
Brick and Mortar shall be defined as in-person instruction.
PCHS eLearning Requirements and Expectations

● Students will be provided with personal login credentials for distance learning for their own use. Students are not to share their login information with any other person except their parents/guardians or responsible adult caregivers as necessary for the parent/guardian or responsible adult caregiver to assist the student in troubleshooting login issues or other technical difficulties.
● STUDENT CONFIDENTIALITY: There is no expectation of privacy during distance learning. When logging in to distance learning, Parents/Students are acknowledging their understanding that anything that they say, write, or do while on video or audio might be viewed by others.
● Students will log on DAILY to Infinite Campus (IC) to record their presence for each of their classes. Students need to actively click next to the “I am here” statement each day, with each class. Students will have the first half hour of each class to record their presence in IC. (See Appendix A).
● If a student is absent from class(es), your parent or guardian must contact the Attendance Office at [email protected].
● Log on DAILY (for each class period) to Schoology for each course Monday-Friday. If students are having technical difficulties, contact your teacher by email, then contact [email protected] for assistance.
● Check Schoology Calendar daily to be able to participate in all of your assigned courses for the day.
● PCHS Netiquette Rules must be followed to participate in eLearning. Students will be required to show their faces in synchronous learning. What is visible to the camera must be school appropriate. Students, parent/guardians and responsible adult caregivers must comply

clarify explanations.
● Monitor student engagement, assignment completion, and attendance on a daily basis.
● To the extent possible, communicate in
advance when you will grade and return
assignments and when you will be holding office
hours for additional help.
● Provide class video teaching (synchronous instruction) daily each class period, minimum 30 minutes. Video conferencing must have a visual component where the student can see the teacher’s face. Additional individual or small group student conferencing for feedback and/or intervention is encouraged.
● Video teaching sessions should be recorded and available to students who are unable to attend the sessions and stored in Schoology material.
● Live online interaction with students will require teachers to present and conduct themselves and present their setting/backgrounds professionally, as they would conduct themselves in a real classroom setting.VideoTeaching Best Practices and Tips for Instructors.
● Create a clear class policy on how ZOOM/Video
teaching sessions can be factored into grades.
For example, Class Participation points may be
issued for video teaching/class instruction for
academic discussions and Socratic seminars.
However, a make-up assignment must be
issued for students who cannot conference due
to technical difficulties, excused absence,
and/or lack of a device or internet.
● Hold Office Hours or to schedule Student Video Conferencing for Instruction/Support. Log Requirement by Google Form that will link with the Intervention Coordinator.
● Give one daily assignment per class period.
● Participate in weekly and monthly required school meetings (by Zoom, Teams, or other virtual method).
● Contact students/parents who are having trouble completing assignments.
with the PCHS Student Technology Policy and Acceptable Use Agreement at all times when utilizing School technology to access distance learning.
● Parent/Guardian and students will review learning expectations and teacher directions in each course and organize time in order to meet class learning goals.
● Complete any daily assignments given by the due date. If students cannot, they must email the teacher and explain your circumstance. When possible, this communication should come before the due date.
● Be proactive about reaching out to teachers and counselors for help and support. However use proper communication guidelines when contacting teachers.
● Do not send emails and Schoology messages to teachers at unusual times and expect an immediate response. For example, it is not advisable to send an email or Schoology message at 1:00 AM and expect an answer before school begins on that day. It is not reasonable to message a staff member on a weekend and expect to have a response from the teacher during the weekend. Your teacher will establish appropriate boundaries for communication and you are expected to adhere to them.
● APPLICATION OF DISCIPLINARY RULES/POLICIES: All other PCHS rules and policies regarding student behavior and discipline including but not limited to the Suspension and Expulsion Policy and the Title IX, Harassment, Intimidation, Discrimination, and Bullying Policy continue to remain in effect. Students who fail to adhere to the above requirements may be subject to legal action including but not limited suspension or expulsion. a. Any student who believes they

to complete.
YOUR ASYNCHRONOUS AND SYNCHRONOUS ASSIGNMENTS MUST TOTAL A MINIMUM OF 80 MIN
PER CLASS (OR 40 MIN ON ALL CLASSES MEET DAYS)(for example):
S (40m)- Getting to Know You Activity
A (20m)- Industrial Revolution Muckraking Photographs and Analysis
S (20m)- Industrial Revolution Pear Deck Notes/Worksheet
Grading of Student Work: Student work will be graded in a timely manner with feedback that supports student learning and growth. Teachers will be required to enter one assignment daily per class period in Schoology gradebooks (one grade, for each student, per class period, Monday through Friday). These weekly assignments will be aligned with the class learning objectives, and have clear criteria for grading.
● For large assignments/ projects/ assessments grading rubrics and timelines/benchmarks will be posted with
the assignment for clarity
● Indicate due dates and method of submission for all assignments.
Assignments/ Projects/ Assessments: a. Focus on project-based tasks whenever possible b. Post expectations for tasks (e.g. rubric, clear outline, with previous student work samples, if available) c. Provide models and recorded demonstrations and/or explanations where possible d. Provide revision opportunities, at teacher discretion. Feedback a. Provide feedback in a timely fashion so that students can apply it to their work b. Feedback should be meaningful to improve future student work c. Feedback should be provided in a positive and constructive manner
Grade Policies and Assessment Categories We will use a traditional grading scale and universal grade bands for the fall.
100-90 A
89-80 B 79-70 C 69-60 D 59- 0 NC
Academic Categories shall be limited in the following way:
● If teachers use total points for grade set-up, points for summative assessments can represent no more than 40% of the total points of the final grade.
● If teachers use categories in their grade set-up, teachers will set up a minimum of three categories. (For example: Assessments, Homework, Classwork) The Summative Assessment category can be no more than 40% of the grade.
● Summative Assessments will not be traditional. ○ Summative Assessments will continue to be projects, essays, presentations, and performance
tasks. Furthermore, traditional “bubble in” multiple choice question tests cannot be counted in an assessment category. Consider other options, such as students justifying their multiple choice answers as a summative assessment option. AP assessment exception: AP teachers will continue to align their course assessments with the College Board
● Department Grade Categories and weights will exist in a centralized location on the PCHS website under “Academics.”
Makeup Policies
Students shall be given the opportunity to make up (or be excused from, at the teacher’s discretion)
schoolwork that was missed because of school activities, an excused absence, or a suspension. The student
shall receive full credit if the work is turned in according to a reasonable makeup schedule, as determined by
the teacher. A reasonable makeup schedule shall include at least one class extension for every class the
student has missed. The tests and assignments may differ from the tests and assignments that the pupil
missed during the absence. It shall be at the discretion of the individual teacher to allow, or not allow, students
who miss school work, because of truancies, the opportunity to make up missed work. Should a student need
to make-up an assignment/ assessment for a class, this should not infringe on another teacher’s class time.
Teachers must give written permission for students to miss their class in order to make up work for another
class. Teachers are reminded to be flexible when students are unable to sign it during class time due to lack of
a device / internet, or other COVID related issues, i.e.family obligations.
Note: Students are strongly encouraged to get work or schedule assessments from the teacher in advance if
the student knows about an absence in advance.
Students who missed work in the class may need:
assignments waived
extended deadlines
alternative assignments
shortened assignments
additional conferencing
other forms of support, accomodations, and intervention.
COMMUNITY SERVICE WAIVER
COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS WILL BE WAIVED (per Board Approval on: August 13, 2020)
THE COMMUNITY SERVICE 40 HOUR GRADUATION REQUIREMENT is waived for the class of 2021.
PCHS values community service; therefore, PCHS will continue to recognize and reward students who
continue to participate in the program. Upon student completion of community service hours project,
students will submit a completed report to Mr. Howard via the PCHS Community Service 20-21 Google
Form.
Attendance Policy:
The student Attendance policy (a student may Fail a course if they have 7 absences) will be waived for the
2020-21 school year. (per Board approval on: August 13, 2020)
Daily Attendance:
● Students take daily attendance for each class period in Infinite Campus (IC). Students will have
the first half hour of each class to record their presence in IC.
● At the end of each period, teachers will receive an email report with the names of students who
were absent from their class that period (from the Attendance Office).
● Teachers have until the next morning at 2:00 AM to update Virtual Attendance (for Friday
Asynchronous Day that means Saturday by 2:00 AM).
● IC Virtual Attendance will be transferred to IC actual attendance daily.
The law requires tiered reengagement strategies for a student who is absent for more than 3 school days or
60% of the instructional days is a school week. An absence is for a student who has no evidence of that
participation that day in synchronous or asynchronous activities - i.e. online activities, completion of regular
assignments, completion of assessments and contacts between employees and students and pupils or
parent/guardians.
Teachers will report students that have been absent according to the above to A-COST Team member JoLeta Simmons at [email protected] and the Attendance Office at [email protected] (in the subject line write LACK OF PARTICIPATION / ABSENT 3 DAYS) to initiate tiered reengagement strategies with the A-COST Team. Parents will be notified of students' class absences via Infinite Campus robocalls. If a student is unable to attend class, parents/guardians should send an email to [email protected] to clear the absence(s). Parents/Guardians will be notified of students' class absences via Infinite Campus robocalls.
Class Change Policy
This policy outlines the procedure for requesting class changes. The policy will give students the opportunity to evaluate
their class choices and to assist students in enrolling in the most appropriate classes for their success. This policy is not
meant to replace informed decision-making on the student’s part in selecting classes for each semester.
STUDENTS CANNOT REQUEST A COURSE FOR A SPECIFIC PERIOD OR A SPECIFIC TEACHER. Only submit a
request to change schedule for the following reasons:
● Already taken the course (including during summer school)
● Placement in the incorrect course
● Student no longer wishes to take the course
● Student is a missing course from the schedule
A. Opportunities to request class changes before the start of the semester:
• Fall Semester: During the orientation/registration days in August. Students MUST fill out the online request of schedule
change form from August 10, 2020- August 20, 2020. NO EXCEPTIONS.
• Spring Semester: To be determined
B. Requests For Change After Deadline: Students requesting a change of schedule of the aforementioned deadlines may
request to drop a specific class or request a different level of the same course (i.e. from AP to Honors) before the
Permanent Schedule Day, September 3, 2020. Such requests require approval from a student’s parent/guardian,
counselor, and the Director of Academic Programming and Guidance Services (DAPGS). Other requests may be
considered based on an individual student’s rationale/reasoning and prior efforts to address the situation. Actual changes
will also be based upon the availability of classes, space in the classes, and input from teachers. The DAPGS may
schedule a conference with the student, parent/guardian, counselor, and teacher to discuss the change request.
PCHS Distance Learning Tiered Interventions (3 Levels) Table for Learning Continuity
The law requires tiered reengagement strategies for a student who is absent for more than 3 school days or 60% of the instructional days is a school week. An absence is for a student who has no evidence of that participation that day in synchronous or asynchronous activities - i.e. online activities, completion of regular assignments, completion of assessments and contacts between employees and students and pupils or parent/guardians.

The A-COST is comprised of:
Director of Academic Achievement Special Ed Department Rep Pali Academy Counselor Technology Department Rep Intervention Coordinator Parent Liaison SLC Coordinator PLC Coordinator Attendance Office Rep(s) ELL Coordinator
For the purposes of tiered re-engagement, the A-COST will design specific outreach and intervention plans for
each student/family on their caseload to include verification of current contact information for each enrolled
pupil, daily notification to parents/guardians of absences, and a plan for outreach from the school to determine
pupil needs including connection with health and social services as necessary and when feasible, transitioning
the pupil to full time in-person instruction. Targeted re-engagement strategies will include the PCHS Distance
Learning Pyramid of Interventions.
Course Communication
a. Teachers will check and respond to emails within 24-48 hours (excluding weekends, holidays, and unassigned
days) with certain exceptions for illness, etc.
b. Teachers will check in with students to get and give feedback both during a lesson and on a regular basis.
c. Teachers will publish a schedule of availability and preferred method of communication clearly stated by posting
this information both in their syllabi and Schoology course page for students.
d. Teachers are to keep all communication within regular school hours. For instance, a teacher cannot post that
there will be a test the night before class is scheduled to occur without prior communication about the test during
the last class period.
e. It is advisable to refrain from responding to emails at abnormal times. Set appropriate boundaries of
communication. For example, it is not advisable to return an email sent from a student at 11:00 PM. It is not
advisable to text a staff member on the weekend, unless there is a dire emergency.

eLearning Assessments https://www.edutopia.org/article/summative-assessment-distance-learning eLearning: Student Attendance Students will check into your classes with each student submitting positive attendance to your class using Infinite Campus. This is to be done during the first 30 min. of class. Student attendance will be monitored by both teachers and the Attendance Office. Students who are absent for more than three consecutive class days will be referred to the PCHS Academic Coordination of Services Team (A-COST). The A-COST is comprised of:
Director of Academic Achievement Pali Academy Counselor Technology Department Rep Intervention Coordinator Parent Liaison SLC Coordinator PLC Coordinator Attendance Office Rep ELL Coordinator
eLearning: Special Education Because each student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP) is unique, the PCHS Special Education Department will work with all students with IEPs and 504 Plans to provide additional supports and resources. The services made available will be determined based upon a student’s last consented-to IEP. The school recognizes distance learning delivery poses tremendous challenges for some of our students. School staff is committed to minimizing the impact of these challenges while the campus is closed. Please reach out to Mary Bush for questions or concerns.
Accessibility Strategies:
● Use heading styles which will allow screen reader software to navigate from section to section.
● Use font, size, and text formatting to distinguish between items or to navigate.
● Provide subtitle of video or transcript of audio announcements made by teachers.
● If linking to videos, make sure the videos have closed captioning available.
● Use descriptive titles, headers and subtitles to provide added context.
● Use meaningful text in links to make it easier for users to predict where navigation will take them. Avoid “click here.”
● Provide a balance of text, image, video and audio. Instruction and resources provided in more than one format provides broader support for the greatest number of users.
eLearning: English Learners English Language Development (ELD) instruction and support will continue for students during distance learning. General education teachers should provide ELD support through differentiated instruction. Additional student support will be provided by the EL Coordinator and support staff. Bilingual Aides will provide translation services and academic support for ELD students as necessary. Email Mary Cappelli or Rosa Gonzalez for assistance.
Academic Integrity Because student work will be completed without teacher supervision, students are expected to to complete assignments with academic integrity at all times.
● Students are prohibited from engaging in plagiarism and cheating. o Plagiarism is using another person’s material in a paper or presentation without giving proper
credit to the author. o Cheating includes copying someone else’s homework, copying information from the internet or
other published material, or dishonestly acquiring information about a test.
● Consequences for digital citizenship, plagiarism or cheating may differ depending on the details of the incident, but they may range from receiving a drop-fail in the class, receiving no credit for the assignment, or being required to redo an assignment or assessment for partial credit.
eLearning: Family Expectations Parent/Guardian role may differ dramatically from the traditional role when students are on campus daily. The school is asking, to the extent possible, students have a quiet place to complete their assignments and consistently engage with their teacher and classes. Additionally, the school asks that families encourage students to maintain a daily routine, which includes logging-in to Schoology daily and completing assignments and assessments when due. PCHS highly recommends parents/guardians request the student’s teachers to add them as a guardian on the Schoology platform. Once added as guardian, a parent can see all assignments and due dates. PCHS recognizes that in-home printing may not be possible; therefore, screen shots, iPhone pictures, completed Google forms and other electronic submissions of students' work are permissible. Schoology and Infinite Campus messages will continue to be sent out from PCHS on an ongoing basis to update parents about student expectations, available student and family resources, and the latest information about school closure.
