Palace of International Forums, TashkentVariations in light for culture and politics

The Palace of International Forums is the center for political dialog and cultural exchanges in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan. This is where people from different nations get together, exchanging experiences and developing new ideas. The lighting concept from Pfarré Lighting Design translates the dynamism of this location into an intelligent interplay of color, light and reflections. Huge suspended concrete rings in the foyer are suddenly made to look like a star formation in the sky. Discreetly installed in their crystal skins are warm white LEDs. The light from these LEDs is directed at the crystals which break it up into many smaller beams. Other illuminated rings guide visitors through cool white marble halls into the heart of the palace: a theater and concert hall designed as an amphitheater which can hold around 2000 people. Rings layered on above the other and inside one another form its distinctive cupola

and repeat the structures at ground level. LED RGB lighting systems and thin fiber bars as wall panels are used to divide the cupola from the hall.

Dior Flagship Store, OsakaPixels in space: a lighting installation by the British artist Angela Bulloch fills the Dior Flagship Store in Osaka with subtle dynamic colour.

»Anroidika Descending The Staircase« is the mysterious title of Angela Bulloch’s concept. A woman and a girl are coming down a staircase but the image is turned into an abstract movement by extreme »pixellation« (an allusion to Marcel Duchamp’s famous painting). What remains is a real staircase in the shop and a wall of cubic light modules. The constantly changing colors and configurations of these modules create a rhythmically pulsating zone in which the steps appear to dissolve into light. The work of art is based on 252 pixel boxes, each one a 50 cm square housing three fluorescent lamps. The feno interface fi dmx-dali 4 signal converter, which acts as the interface between the DMX control system and the digital dimmable ballasts, enables any color in any intensity to be produced in any of the boxes – a kind of electronic palette for artwork in light for the 21st century.

Haus im Haus, HamburgA house within a house: the building by BEHNISCH ARCHITECTS inside the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce redefines the concepts of inside and outside.

The trading hall in the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce with its classic arcades and colonnades has recently been transformed into an architectural landscape. In 2007 in the middle of this impressive space a five-storey office building designed by BEHNISCH ARCHITEKTEN was constructed – light and airy, completely independent, and only now and again connected to the galleries of the historical late 17th century building by bridges. The light inside this building within a building is also independent. More than 160,000 LED light dots, arranged in square modular panels, have been installed under the glass floors of each of the storeys. Lighting designers from the Nimbus Group specified that the light in each of the zones should be variable. In view of the quantities involved, this presented a special challenge for the reliability of the LED dimmers from feno. The complexity of the project also called for

intensive consultation and on-site support. The entire process was one of precision and dynamics, and this seems to be expressed symbolically in a subtle effect – a wave-like motion of light that can be activated on a touchscreen and that looks like clouds passing over the LED panels.

Dorint Sofitel Bayerpost, MunichA free-standing four-storey sculpture in light based on a steel structure that is divided into cubes by horizontal and vertical elements.

Since September 2004 a free-standing sculpture in the foyer of the Hotel Dorint Sofitel Bayerpost in Munich has been creating a splendid atmosphere. This artwork in light is based on a steel structure that is divided into cubes by horizontal and vertical elements. It is covered by a fine transparent copper mesh. Inside, RGB lighting modules with controllers from feno create dynamic and varied scenarios. Objects or man-size figures placed in this installation appear in different colors depending on the angle from which they are viewed.

Audi Booth, PekingWhite LED lighting installation for Audi TDI Flames by FOUR TO ONE.

At the 2008 Beijing Motor Show, Audi made use of a subtle yet brilliant LED flame installation when it unveiled its new Q5 SUV. The artistic LED lighting integrated in the building was used to symbolize the AUDI Clean Diesel concept, appearing as white light in flame-like motion. The customized LED modules with integrated DMX lighting control were designed and produced by feno.

Incheon International AirportBuilt-in sensors detect approaching trains and create an atmosphere with changing colour patterns.

The second terminal at Incheon International Airport, designed like the first by the French architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte, opened in June 2008. The railway station at the airport is normally bathed in a warm white light. But whenever a train is about to enter the station it triggers built-in sensors connected to controllers from feno. These controllers then control the lighting system to create changing color patterns. This is an impressive way of providing passengers with a visual cue and improving safety for everyone concerned.

Rosenheim University of Applied SciencesLighting experiments welcomed

Light creates perception. Without it we can’t register objects or spaces. Viewed in this way, light can definitely be considered a building material.

These considerations played an important role in the decision to create a ‘Light Workshop’ at Rosenheim University of Applied Sciences, south of Munich, Germany. In the „Light Workshop“, various lighting and lighting control technologies are available to the students of the faculty of Interior Design, from the classical with fluorescent lighting to ultra-modern LED solutions.

Lined with freely programmable LED panels, an “experimental space” forms the central element of the “Light Workshop”. The coloured fluorescent lamps integrated into the panels create a huge spectrum of light allowing diverse applications. From recreating a

cloudy sky to the effects of light and concepts for interactive media surfaces and facades, students can try out their ideas in model experiments. The prospective creators of rooms and objects can hardly get a better foundation on the way to entering their profession.

Dresdner Bank, Frankfurt am MainInteractive steps, bridges and paths with lighting effects created when people walk over them.

The lighting effects of the interactive steps, bridges and paths are created when as people walk over them. The warm white light appears softly through the satinized covers and follows people "every step of the way". This brilliant effect is produced with the aid of sensors that detect movement on the six interactive routes and transfer this information to the lighting control units designed specifically for the task by feno. Four dynamic sequences are programmed and can be individually selected. Dimmer values and dimming rates have been stored and these are used by Magdalena Jetelová as part of her work of art in light.

This project is based on successful cooperation between Novotny Mähner Associates, Werning Day & Light, se´lux, Oertel & Prüm and feno.

Clarins, StarnbergDynamic lighting control with smooth transitions from one colour to the next.

The architect Jürgen Johannes and LIH Light Impex Henze GmbH have cooperated on the design of the Wellness luminaire for the special lighting required by CLARINS for its new building in Stranberg. Eight of these luminaires have been manufactured. A dynamic lighting control system from feno in conjunction with DALI devices provides the basis for dynamic color changes and exceptionally smooth transitions from one color to the next. Glare-free luminaires have been placed above the chairs and bathtub in the training area in a pleasing arrangement.

Playmobil, ZirndorfThe new subterranean labyrinth of light in the Playmobil Fun Park in Zirndorf lets children explore the fascinating world of colour.

The new subterranean labyrinth of light in the Playmobil Fun Park in Zirndorf lets children explore the fascina-ting world of color. In this interactive warren of caves, each cave can be bathed in different colors. The passageways from one cave to the next are a treat for the eyes as one color blends into another. Children can change the color of a cave by pressing their hands on one or more colored sensor elements – the possibilities for mixing colors to create new shades are virtually unlimited. Hidden behind the evenly illuminated color panels in the roof are more than 3850 LED strip modules from feno.
