Introducing Palabras a su paso:El estudio de palabras en acciónThis K-5 program builds and expands on phonics,vocabulary, and spelling skills, giving students asolid foundation to master the Spanish language. Palabras a su paso: El estudio de palabras en acciôn is a rigorous program based on research using the Spanish spelling inventory with Spanish speakers in the U.S., Mexico, and Chile. It offers a hands-on approach to word study that parallels the Words Their Way: Word Study in Action program but is based on Spanish orthographic principles. This innovative approach teaches students to look closely at words to discover the spelling patterns, syllable structures, and spelling-meaning connections of Spanish orthography that are needed for reading and writing. This program focuses especially on the word sort—the process of physically grouping words or pictures into specific categories. The word-sort process is particularly supportive for students and teachers in bilingual settings and is equally effective in classrooms that use only one language.

The Word Study Approach:• Provides specific and direct instruction in how words are formed and derived. Students internalize the meanings and usage of words through motivating and pedagogically sound word sorts. • Allows students to work from the known to the unknown as they make associations between the pronunciation of words and their spellings. • Uses synthesis, analysis, and analogy to promote development of both decoding and encoding skills. Students apply critical thinking skills in making categorical judgments and learn to apply spelling rules and generalizations. • Introduces common, useful words that will be reinforced naturally through classroom and everyday contexts. • Allows teachers to establish routines after sorting criteria are introduced while simultaneously providing for differentiation.
