January 22, 2013—PAL Meeting
7:00 P.M.—Public Welcome
Cottesmore Retirement Center 2909 14th Av NW, Gig Harbor, WA
January PAL Program—
Mary McInnis- Pastels: Pastel
Techniques and Surfaces!
Important Member Information! Send Photos of what you are doing and what is going on
in your art world. I like to put as much in the Newsletter as I can. Everyone deserves to be seen!
NEW “DUE BY” date: Please send your articles in by the 1st of the month, starting in March. My plan
is to have this newsletter out around the 10th of every month, if possible.
The Peninsula Art League will meet Tuesday, January 22, from 7-9pm at Cottesmore
Care, 2909 14th Avenue NW, in Gig Harbor*. The meeting will feature Mary McInnis
who will demonstrate her pastel technique and talk about the different pastels and sur-
faces on which to work.
“I have been painting and drawing all my life with involvement in other areas: illustrator
and photographer for Seattle Opera; mother of a child with diabetes; gardener; volunteer;
lots of other interests but always keeping one toe in the art world and a working studio in
which to retreat whenever possible.
“Over the years I have come to the conclusion that my art speaks to the soul of the com-
mon man. There are no esoteric or hidden meanings. No deep, dark attempts at soul-
searching. I see beauty and I want to record and share it. [I want my work to be] some-
thing that uplifts and brightens, something that gives pause for
the wondrous beauty of the natural world or the goodness of hu-
mans….and to calm and restore the soul.”

December President’s Message: HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and are ready to do
some great artwork!
At our January 22nd meeting, we will be recapping the pro-
gress of all our committees. The Open Show and Summer Art
Festival committees have been meeting during our holiday
break to iron out any hiccups and firm up details for these
events. We are all looking forward to an exciting year ahead.
Mary McInnis will be presenting our program for this meeting. She will be demon-
strating her pastel work. It should be fun and very inspiring. Looking forward to see-
ing you all at the meeting. Please come and support your group and your volunteers.

Thank you all for the Christmas Party Potluck photos! I wrote about it last
month, but didn’t have any pictures. I’m glad I can add them this month. On De-
cember 2, 2012, our annual Potluck Christmas Party at the Rosedale Hall was en-
joyed by a great group of members and their guests. The hall was beautifully
decorated with lights and hand made centerpieces which were given to some of
the lucky guests. There was a variety of foods brought by everyone. Charli
Meacham and Laurel Stone entertained us throughout the evening with wonder-
ful Christmas and holiday music.

Gig Harbor Summer Art Festival Committee Report –
The Festival Committee has been working on updating the forms and system for digital entry of images for this year’s Festival Screening– we plan to have the information online by the end of Janu-ary. In the meantime, we have been having lively discussions and planning sessions to make our fes-tival on the weekend of July 20 & 21 a success. Lots of work and planning goes into this, as you can imagine.
The committee members this year are:
Emily Maxson-Porter and Donna Moen working on Festival Screening.
Carlene Salazar working with the local schools to get poster and T-shirt art images.
Anne and Bob Knapp working on the sign-off sheet for city merchants and the music for the festival.
Myrna Binion leading the committee, assisting where needed and taking in the festival applications and communicating with vendors to make the street map.
Charlee Glock-Jackson- Publicity and other duties as needed by Sunburst Studios
We still need at least two more committee members to complete our planning for this year’s festival. We need one person who will work with Food Vendors in the planning stages and during the festival weekend as needed and to schedule porta potties, garbage and rental equipment. We need another person to do a bunch of detail work such as scheduling the overnight security, police schedule at the festival, shuttle schedule and obtain permits from the City of Gig Harbor. Those jobs can be divided up in any way, but all the tasks must be done.
Please – if you are a good organizer – we need your help! These tasks don’t take too much time or ef-fort but the committee is just that – the people already on the committee have plenty to do and we need more help. Please email Myrna Binion at [email protected] or call 253-857-4222 – whatev-er you can do will be appreciated!
Don’t forget! Joe Garcia, will also give a watercolor workshop in August.

Feather Hilger is the first to be "featured artist" in 2013 at the Kimble Gallery. The show runs Jan 7—Feb 4 at Kimble Esspresso Gal-lery 6950 Kimball Dr. Gig Harbor, WA 98335. The show will consist of new paintings from the last year's landscape work. Gardens, flowers, seascapes and structures (mainly within the local area). The image "lantern, lillies and lavender" is from Anne Knapp's garden. Here is a cheap shameless plug for our plein aire leader and the great Plein Aire painting that’s done. The lighthouse is the one on Alki beach. You can see more art at Feather’s blog : http://theartworkofstudio-g.blogspot.com/ for more info, updates or future showings .
