NATIONAL BROADCSTING SERVICE

This service was launched on 28th August, 2008.

Seventeen hours daily transmission from 7 am to 12 midnight.

NBS programmes radiate from Islamabad, Peshawar, Lahore, Faisalabad, Bahawalpur, D.I. Khan, Quetta, Zhob, Loralai, Turbat, Khuzdar, Hyderabad and Karachi.

Provincial capital stations are producing one hour Programme for this service but with the news development determine the time slots.

PROGRAMME WING

It is one of the important wings of PBC. Mission of the Programme wing is to entertain people through music programmes, features and plays. It educates people on social issues and problems. i.e. public service programmes covering health, education, environment, population welfare, agriculture, special persons, rights of women, human rights, minorities and media freedom etc. It informs people about the policies, programmes and achievements of the government and disseminate viewpoint of opposition and other stake-holders on different issues.

URDU PROGRAMMES FOR OVERSEAS PAKISTANIS

World Service daily broadcasts Urdu programmes of 8 hours and 30 minutes duration.

Objective of these programmes is to keep Pakistanis living abroad updated with the latest developments in the homeland and social and cultural scene.

Focus of Urdu programmes is also on apprising the overseas Pakistanis about economic activities in the country and encourage them to play their role in development and progress of their homeland.

These Programmes are also streamed live through PBC web.

FM STATIONS

Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation has established different FM Stations to cater to the infotainment and educational needs of listeners in their

respective languages all over the country. FM-101 Stations are working at Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar,

Quetta, Faisalabad, Sialkot, Hyderabad and Multan. FM-93 Stations are working at Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Kohat, Bannu,

Sargodha, Mianwali, Mithi, Bhitshah, Gwadar, Chitral, Lahore, Karachi, Larkana, Multan, Mirpur, Muzaffarabad, Abbottabad, Khairpur,

Hyderabad, D.I.Khan, Faisalabad and Gilgit. At present FM-101 channel is broadcasting 195 hours of programming per day from 9 stations. It consists of music genres attracting the youth of the

country. The transmission is sprinkled with information on a variety of topics including driving tips, horoscopes; weather & sports update and

even stocks and business hints. FM-101 channel is broadcasting a current affairs programme “Naye Uffaq” on every Tuesday from 8:00pm to

9:00pm in which Minister of Information & Broadcasting highlights the policies of Government and answers the questions of listeners through live

Planet FM-94 is an exclusive English channel operating 24/7 to respond to the increasing popularity of English language as the main global business

language, catering to the needs of young generation and the diplomatic as well as foreigners’ community in Islamabad.

The FM-93 Stations broadcast a variety of programmes consisting of all formats including Music, Talks, Interviews, Documentaries, Features, Special Audience Programmes for women, children, youth, students, labourers, farmers and armed forces, besides literature and religious

programmes.The main thrust of these programmes is community broadcasts. For this

purpose, stations involve their respective listeners in the programmes through a number of methods, including phone-in calls, letters, emails,

SMS and outdoor recordings. All these stations are broadcasting programmes in their respective local/regional languages and in Urdu with a

ratio of 70/30 % respectively. Total broadcast hours of these FM Stations are 260 hours daily.

CENTRAL PRODUCTION UNITS

Three Central Production Units at Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi.

Production units produce music, drama, features, documentaries and programmes for special occasions.

Major task of central production units is to preserve recordings of historical values comprising speeches, interviews of father of the nation, heroes of freedom movement and other prominent personalities, drama, folk, classical and semi classical music and other important programmes.

CPU has over 3.5 million minutes recording in its archives which is being digitized.

PAKISTAN BROADCASTING ACADEMY

• Radio Pakistan Staff Training Centre (STC) formally came into being in 1949.

• After the establishment of Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation the two institution were merged into one institution Staff Training School (STS) in 1973 to ensure better coordination of the PBC training programmes. It was renamed as Pakistan Broadcasting Academy in 1983.

OBJECTIVES

To give the trainees basic understanding of their professional assignments in the Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation To improve professional skills of PBC personnel To enhance managerial capabilities of PBC officers

The Engineering Wing is entrusted with the responsibility of providing technical support for transmission services of PBC. The Wing has to manage operation and maintenance of all the Medium wave, Shortwave, FM transmitters and studio equipment installed at stations all over the country. It has to provide program production facilities at the Broadcasting Houses and ensure smooth and uninterrupted transmissions. Its area of responsibilities also includes introduction of new technology, provision of modern equipment and planning and execution of development projects for establishment of new transmitting facilities.

ENGINEERING WING

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY WING (IT)

The Information Technology Wing is entrusted with the responsibility of digitization and modernization in PBC. The Wing has to look after all Network, infrastructure of LAN/WAN, management and development of official website , ensure live streaming of different channels on web from all over Pakistan, interconnection of PBC stations through audio streaming, development of different automation software for PBC, Digital audio solution for all studios, Automated news gathering system, deployment and management of FTP, proxy services and digital audio library for all PBC Stations.

The responsibilities of IT wing further extend to introduce the up to date technology to meet the challenges of modern era like audio/ video streaming application development for mobile users.

ACHIEVEMENTS DURING LAST THREE YEARS

Launching of National Broadcasting Service (NBS), a dedicated current affairs channel on August 28, 2008.

Launching of FM 94 – Planet an English Entertainment Channel.

Establishment of largest FM-93 network of Pakistan with 22 stations.

Converting Home Stations to community stations.

Policy introduced for balanced and objective coverage in News and Current Affairs Programmes Representation of opposition ensured.

Prime Minister’s Monthly Radio address.

Weekly live one hour programme with Minister for Information and Broadcasting.

All Stations linked with SMS and live phone interaction.

First state of the art – digital, music recording studio plus production house at a minimum cost by PBC engineers.

PBC played an anti-terrorism role by mobilizing people of all walks of life and arranged cultural programmes.

PBC launched fund raising movement for IDPs and collected Rs. 6.5 million.

PBC worked 24/7 to help flood victims of 2010 and contributed over Rs. 4.5 million to PM’s flood relief fund.

An FM Station was established at Hunza in may 2010 for coverage of Attabad lack crisis.

24 hours special transmission for rain/flood affected areas of Sindh from NBS and regional stations

PBC persuaded USAID and Japan Governments to install and commission 500 KW MW transmitter in Islamabad Faqeerabad respectively.

PBC persuaded USAID to establish 100 KW MW in D.I.Khan and 400 KW MW Transmitters in Peshawar alongwith studio equipment.

Launched South Asia Broadcast Service adding three new international languages (Tamil, Sinhali, Nepali).

A number of training courses/workshops were arranged with collaboration of international organizations such as DW,AIBD and UNESCO.

Launching of bilingual website of PBC with special feature of live streaming of programmes by various stations.

Active participation in Social Media such as face book and twitter.
