East Lake Sammamish Trail - Issaquah segment to open June 12The newly paved segment of the East Lake Sammamish Trail (ELST) in Issaquah is scheduled to re-open June 12. This 2.2-mile-long stretch of the trail from SE 43rd Way to Gilman Boulevard has been closed for redevelopment since May 2012.
The newly developed trail will provide a multi-use path for bicyclists, pedestrians, joggers, skaters, and other users of all ages and abilities. The project improves trail safety and accessibility by paving and widening the trail. Other improvements include a new stormwater system, retaining walls, signage, bollards, fencing, landscaping, and native vegetation.
The Issaquah segment is the second phase of the multi-year development of the East Lake Sammamish Trail corridor. A 1.2-mile segment in Redmond was completed in November 2011. The ELST is an 11-mile long multi-use trail that completes a missing link in King County’s most heavily used non-motorized transportation and recreation corridor.
Why is King County developing the trail?Once completed, the ELST will be paved and wider than the existing interim gravel trail. The trail is being designed and constructed in phases as funding becomes available. Safety and accessibility will be improved with a new 12-foot-wide paved corridor with 2-foot soft surface shoulders on each side and enhanced intersections, crossing treatments, and drainage.

What’s next? Construction in SammamishThe seven-mile Sammamish segment, from NE 187th St. to SE 43rd St., is the longest and most complex to design and construct. This section of the trail will be developed in phases beginning with the 2.6-mile long North Sammamish segment, from NE 187th St. to Inglewood Hill Road.
Design of the North Sammamish segment is now complete, and construction is
anticipated to begin in February 2014. Starting construction early in the year will allow crews to complete weather sensitive work during dry summer months, resulting in a more efficient schedule and fewer impacts to trail neighbors and users.
Additional information regarding trail construction will be mailed to trail neighbors this summer.
