welcomeWhat an exciting fall full of theater. From the looks of this issue of the StagePage, this winter isn’t letting up, and I am grateful for that. Shorter days, colder nights — what better time to be in a theater?
We have a few other ways you can spend those winter nights:
This winter we are going to begin our launch of podcasts, so make sure to visit www.stagesource.org for updates.
Learn about the power of social media. Our YouTube channel has a series of videos that can help.
The StageSource Job Fair and If I Knew Then series are back this winter. Like us on Facebook, and keep up to date on the latest.
I hope you have a wonderful holiday season. And to all of you, I wish you a very happy New Year full of health, happiness, and great theater.

WINTER.12/13
spotlight on the wilbury theatre groupThe Wilbury Theatre Group was founded in 2010, with an emphasis on producing high-quality professional work that provokes thought in our audiences, The Wilbury Group is committed to producing challenging and engaging plays that would otherwise go unseen in Providence.
After emerging into Providence’s independent theater scene with a critically acclaimed production of Edward Albee’sWho’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? in the fall of 2010, The Wilbury Group, under the leadership of founding Artistic Director Josh Short, continued to produce new and established plays, each more challenging than the last. Within two years The Wilbury Group established itself as part of Providence’s fringe theatre scene, attracting thousands of patrons to see productions of classic and new works, some of which were Rhode Island, New England, or World premieres, oftentimes at “non-traditional” venues around the city, including the New England premiere of Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, the world premiere of Destefano on the Air, Eugene Ionesco’s masterpiece Exit the King, the New England premiere of Rajiv Joseph’s Gruesome Playground Injuries, and a critically acclaimed run of Martin McDonagh’s The Lieutenant of Inishmore.
While staying true to a firm commitment to the oft-quoted adage that the play is always the thing, The Wilbury Group also recognizes that, perhaps more than content, a company’s commitment to presenting works at prices affordable to the general public is a key piece of nurturing theatre, as both an accessible art form and a means of entertainment. This commitment is exhibited through our designation of ‘Pay-What-You-Can’ performances for every production, regular discounts for local students and artists, and general admission prices appropriate for the average living wage. With this in mind, and in addition to the employment of local talent whenever possible, The Wilbury Group continues to strive to challenge audiences with productions of thought provoking pieces while being a productive member of our local economy.
In January 2013, The Wilbury Group presents the Rhode Island premiere of Kristoffer Diaz’s Obie Award winning play The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity. For more information or to learn more about The Wilbury Group’s 2012-2013 season, visit them online at www.thewilburygroup.org or email [email protected].
spotlight on fort point theatre channelFort Point Theatre Channel (www.fortpointtc.org) emerged from Boston’s only arts-centered neighborhood as much as from the theater world. Indeed, the best description of why FPTC is special is who it is: Rick Dorff, Mary Driscoll, Christie Lee Gibson, Silvia Graziano, Anne Loyer, Marc S. Miller, Sally Nutt, Amanda Sheehan, Robin Smith, Nick Thorkelson, Douglas Urbank, Daniel J. van Ackere, and Mark Warhol. Some came to FPTC as “theatre people;” others are painters, photographers, musicians, installation artists, film artists, etc. In honoring co-artistic director Graziano as a New Revolutionary, Boston Magazine described FPTC as “a unique initiative in the performing arts in the city.”
An example of how FTPC’s members work together to accomplish lots with little is the Bertolt Brecht/Tony Kushner play The Good Person of Setzuan, coming in February. It’s a big show for any company, and all 13 core members are part of it, plus many guests to round out a cast of 18 and a staff of 25. A visual artist, Anne Loyer, leads the Brecht design team. FPTC commix illustrator/painter Nick Thorkelson is composing the score (assisted by his brother, Peter Tork, formerly of The Monkees). FPTC core member Christie Lee Gibson directs. Producer Marc Miller has four lines.
FPTC will greet the summer with Dangerous Ideas: An Evening of Opera, featuring Ensemble Warhol and OperaHub. Gibson, who doubles as artistic
director of OperaHub, will direct Eric Satie’s Socrate. Ensemble Warhol, led by FPTC’s Mark Warhol, will perform an excerpt from his opera, Jeanne Meets Mark.
FPTC is perhaps best known for its free Exclamation Points! Most recently, the bill for EP! 11—Napoleon Bowling: Two Evenings of Anachronistic Events included plays, improv, films, burlesque, and live music, with performances in Fort Point and at the Currier Museum of Art.
