The South Holland Public Library’s Youth Services Department is happy to offer the Paws to Read Program. This program provides the opportunity for children to read to a trained therapy dog. Children read aloud to a dog accompanied by a volunteer. The dogs and volunteers are provided by Power Paws for Kids. Reading to animals builds the confidence of the children and provides them with an exciting environment to practice their reading skills. The dogs listen attentively, do not judge, criticize or laugh, allow children to proceed at their own pace, and are less intimidating than peers. Our next Paws to Read session will be held on Monday, April 9. Sign up now!

ADULT PROGRAMS LIBRARY NEWS
National Volunteer Week: April 15-21, 2012
We extend a BIG “THANK YOU”
to our WONDERFUL VOLUNTEERS
who have helped us this past year!
Preserving Patron Privacy @ SHPL Did you know that librarians have a CODE OF ETHICS that we take very seriously? Part of our Code is that we pledge to protect your right to privacy and confidentiality in what you read, consult or borrow from us and that we uphold the principles of intellectual freedom and resist censorship.
Since it is our professional duty to support your right to privacy, what does this mean for you?
1. We do not sell your personal information.
2. We do not collect or share information about your reading habits or database use.
3. If you request a book be held for you at the library, we hold it for YOU. We do not allow anyone else to pick it up without your permission. If you want to give someone the right to pick up your books, we offer a release form that states whom it is OK for us to give your books. The release forms are at our Circulation Desk and you may fill one out in the library or take some home for your family to fill out. Come by and we will explain how this works.
4. We will not turn over our basic records, even to the police, without a court order.
5. Although we offer books, DVDs, CDs and other items for loan, we are not a commercial enterprise so we do not use your records to advertise or make money. We are a department of your Village government and your Library records are treated as confidential, much like your health and insurance records.

Re-Peats From the Green Committee:
As we float along the calendar toward Spring, it’s time for some reminders from the Green Committee! The state has prohibited the disposal of many common household electronics into residential waste and recycling bins. For a list of items included, see the December/January issue of South Holland Today, available at the Library or via the Village website. Local collection sites include South Park Hardware, O’Reilly Auto Parts, or South Suburban College. And for those who can’t wait to start planting, check out the current issue of the U. of Illinois Extension Service Gardener’s Corner newsletter: http://urbanext.illinois.edu/gardenerscorner.
