UK Research & DevelopmentBlake UK’s aerial research and development facility is established in-house. Our semi-anechoic test suite enables us to perform accurate measurements. The R&D team workclosely with customers to enhance existing designs, develop new products or meet specificcustomer requirements for sub-contract manufacturing.

Blake UK played an active role in the introduction of the digital aerial benchmarking schemeby the Confederation of Aerial Industries (CAI) and Digital Television Group (DTG) in 2003.

Our range of benchmarked aerials now exceeds that of any other manufacturer withthirteen products covering ALL four standards.

ManufacturingFollowing a policy of best manufacturing practice, we have invested heavily in automation.Programmable Logic Control (PLC) machines are used to improve quality and repeatabilityof products. Specific overseas manufacturing partners are utilised where applicable to bringin high-quality components whilst remaining price-competitive.

ProductsBlake UK offers a complete spectrum ofaerials, covering every current UKbroadcast reception requirement, fromVHF (FM and Band III DAB radio) to UHFaerials for digital and analogue terrestrialTV.

Product ExcellenceAttention to detail in all aspects of product design is Proception’s hallmark. On this pagewe look at some design aspects common to many products across the range.

TETRA filteringWith the continual increase in the use of wirelesscommunication systems, particularly in the VHF and UHFspectrum, the possibility of interference to TV receptionfrom out-of-band RF signals is always present. Many installerswill recall the problems which arose during the roll-out ofthe emergency services’ Airwave TETRA system a few yearsago.

Such interference is the result of inadequate immunity ofreceiving and distribution equipment to strong out-of-bandsignals from nearby transmitters. Whilst the move to digitalTV may remove the direct visible effects from viewers’ screens, other effects will still be present in the background, erodingreception margins and making systems more susceptibleto other forms of interference, such as the unavoidabletropospheric co-channel interference which occurs under

certain weather conditions.

¥•PROception amplifier inputs feature good input filteringto reduce the level of unwanted out-of-band signals beforethe amplifying stages.

¥•Dedicated UHF aerial inputs have built-in TETRA filteringgiving typically 26—30˚dB attenuation below 400˚MHz andexcellent immunity to out-of-band signals (see exampleresponse curves).

Power supplies and energy efficiencyWith energy costs rising rapidly and concerns about CO2emissions in mind, it’s reassuring to know that the powersupplies in PROception amplifiers are designed to avoidunnecessary energy waste.Keeping power consumption to a realistic minimum alsocontributes to the cool running of products and to improvedreliability. Power supply components are carefully chosenand adequately rated to help ensure long product lifetimes.

CompliancePROception products are independently tested and certified for compliance with relevant EMC andsafety standards by a leading German test laboratory. Where relevant, CE marking indicates conformancewith the European EMC and low-voltage directives.

All products comply with the Restriction of Hazardous Substances directive (RoHS). Proception Ltd. isa registered UK producer under the WEEE regulations (Producer no. WEE/KJ0150QW.)

MATV Launch Amplifier

18 www.blake-uk.com/tla

Advanced 4-input MATV Launch Amplifier — proTLA41The NEW proTLA41 is an updated version of the classic single-output MATV launchamplifier. With an output capability of 110 dB V (5 ch. analogue) or 104 dB V (all-digital,6/7 DTT muxes) from its push-pull output stage the amplifier is able to feedsystems of up to 100 or more outlets via appropriate passive distribution networks.

Three separate antenna inputs for Band II (FM), Band III (DAB or TV) and UHF allowfor excellent out-of-band filtering of any unwanted signals from local base stationand similar transmitters. A fourth input — AUX UHF — is provided to allow connectionof locally-generated signals such as CCTV. This auxiliary input has lower gain than themain UHF input to minimise noise degradation of the antenna signals. Each of thefour inputs has its own gain control, allowing simple optimisation of the outgoingsignal levels. A directionally-coupled monitor point is provided, allowing accurate setup— a feature probably unique in an amplifier of this class.

Where off-air signals are low, or the antenna downlead is long, line-power isavailable at the UHF input for a PROception proMHD11L or proMHD11M UHFpreamplifier.

Features

¥ Three well-filtered antenna inputs covering the VHF and UHF bands, plus separate auxiliary UHF input for local channels, CCTV, etc.

¥ Separate gain control on each input; 4 dB upward slope equalisation on UHF ANT input.¥ Line power for a proMHD11L or proMHD11M preamplifier available at UHF aerial input.¥ Accurate —30 dB directional monitor point.¥ Low mains power consumption for cool and economical running.

Inclusion of proAMPs andstarBOXes as power sources in the top row refers to using their line-power outputs, availableat the UHF antenna inputs.

Key and notes

Fully compatible, recommended configuration. Compatible powering, but not a normally useful or recommended configuration. 9 V from Sky receiver also required at UHF input to select Mode 2, when powering from proPSA123. Optional, in conjunction with powering from Sky receiver (reduces receiver loading by approx. 20 mA). Not compatible and/or invalid configuration. Not compatible, risk of product damage due to excess voltage or current.

* The proSAT1EYE is usually powered directly from any output of one of the amplifiers indicated *, or a Sky receiver. In unusual cases where no DC continuity exists between the amplifier and the eye location the proPSU11F my be used to provide local powering.

Dual-mode amplifiers need to be powered on an output for Mode 1 (plain amplifier) operation and on the (UHF) input for Mode 2 (return-path mode).

5 V 30 mA power output from antenna socket is only available on certain models of DVB-T / DTT / Freeviewset-top box or IDTV. Power will need to be enabled via the receiver’s set-up menus.

Galvanizing Protection

54 www.blake-uk.com

Galvanizing ProtectionThere are many ways of protecting metal fromthe weather. Common methods adopted forprotecting steel aerial support brackets includepainting, zinc electroplating and passivation, and hot-dip galvanizing.

Painting can be the lowest-cost method butusually gives relatively weak protection. Oneindustrial method adopted for painting steelbrackets is to immerse the component in a bathof ’paint’ (actually a specialist coating formulation). This process may be preceded by a degreasingstage and followed by draining and drying, thelatter being either natural air drying or acceleratedby the use of ovens.

Electroplated zinc and passivation ("zinc & pass.")provides good protection, but with a fairly limitedlifetime when used outdoors. Electroplatedcoatings are thin and will corrode away, typicallyin under ten years. Chromate passivation is achemical post-treatment which is nearly alwaysused in conjunction with electroplated zinc finishes.Passivation imparts the familiar greeny-yellowcolour. Thinner passivation can give a white orshiny finish; this looks cleaner when new but isless effective. Although passivation improvescorrosion performance in salt spray tests, it doesnot greatly increase the lifetime of a part such asan aerial bracket in typical outdoor conditions.

An example of a wall bracket without galvanized protectionafter being installed.

Hot-dip galvanizing is the process of dipping steelcomponents into a bath of molten zinc, followinga chemical cleaning pre-treatment. The zinc reactswith the steel to form intermetallic alloy layers, ensuring intimate metallurgical bonding betweenthe substrate and the zinc outer surface. Agalvanized zinc coating is very much thicker —possibly an order of magnitude thicker — than apassivated electroplated zinc finish and has acorrespondingly longer lifetime.

Section 17 of the CAI Code of Practice for theInstallation of Terrestrial and Satellite TV ReceptionSystems states that hot dip galvanized bracketsshould always be used. This is for good reason;the installer will have peace of mind that a goodjob has been done if batch galvanized productshave been installed. A galvanized bracket ormount will always be considered to have superiorprotection compared to a painted or plated item.Use of the inferior finishes inevitably leads torusting once the coating has failed — and this inturn can lead to unsightly staining of brickworkand masonry, as is all too often seen!

The following is a summary of the Zinc MillenniumMap Project, which was an investigation into thebackground atmospheric corrosion rate of zinccoatings in the UK and Ireland.

An example of a galvanized protected product.

Page 55: pages 41 & 42 of Blake UK's pdf catalogue UK Catalogue v4.0.pdf · 42 - 43 Network ... installation methods, ... When comparing products beware of gain figures being given relative

The Zinc Millennium Map ProjectIt is widely known that levels of atmospheric sulphur dioxide (SO2) have been falling for severaldecades due to the changes in prime power source fuels. The result of the Zinc Millennium MapProject* demonstrates how the reduction in SO2 levels since 1991 has helped to increase the lifeexpectancy of hot dip galvanized coatings.

Hot dip galvanizing, in conjunction with its many other benefits, including lowest life time cost, reliabilityand coating toughness, is the most effective corrosion protection system available.

Data for painted finishes are not available.

Figures above are based on a typical 3 mm steel product.

Technical Information

UK Digital Television TransmittersThe following tables give details of main and larger relay transmitters. Sites are listed in alphabetical order, regardless of region. For each pre-DSO site the first row gives the present digital and analogue channels and powers and the second shaded row, indicates the proposed channels and powers which will be used after DSO. Post-DSO (switched) sites have only one row.

Post-DSO information is shaded to indicate whether there is a change of aerial group:Light grey shading indicates that all services are within the original analogue group (excluding Channel 5). Existing aerials mayfunction satisfactorily, subject to the condition of the installation. Blue shading indicates that some or all post-DSO services areon channels outside the original analogue group (excluding Channel 5). New aerials may be required for satisfactory reception.

Terrestrial HD Transmitter Roll-Out for 2010

The following details and timetable have been announced, making Freeview HD available to over 50% of the UK population intime for the World Cup in June.

Technical Information

Key to columns

Ant.: Indicates the optimum aerial group & signal polarisation. The remaining columns give UHF channel numbers & maximum ERPs.D1 - D6: For pre-DSO services these columns correspond to the six multiplexes, MUX 1 , MUX 2 , MUX A , MUX B , MUX C andMUX D respectively. For post-DSO services D1- D3 correspond to the proposed public service broadcast (PSB) multiplexes,BBC A , D3 & 4 and BBC B . D4 - D6 correspond to the proposed commercial (COM) multiplexes SDN , Arqiva A and Arqiva B .

Note that the main purpose of the table is to list the channel numbers which will be used and that multiplexes within each group(PSB or COM) may be in arbitrary order.BBC1 - Five: These columns give the UHF channel numbers and maximum ERPs for the analogue services.

Notes relating to specific sites1 Bromsgrove, Lark Stoke and The Wrekin will operate as a single frequency network (SFN) post-DSO. 2 Bromsgrove: D4 will be on25 kW, D5 will use ch 34 at 50 kW and D6 will use 29 at 25 kW for some months after switchover during 2011. 3 Durris: D4-D6 willswitch a few months after D1-D3 in 2010. 4 Lark Stoke: D4-D6 will use ch 31, ch 57 and ch 60 all at 25 kW for some months afterswitchover during 2011. 5 Long Mountain: D2 will be on ch 52, D3 will be on ch 56 temporary period until 2011. 6 Mendip: D4-D6 will operate at 10 kW ERP until 2011 and then increase to 12.5kW until 2012. 7 Nottingham: D4-D6 will be on ch 67, ch 63 andch 59 all at 40 kW for a temporary period during 2011. 8 Ridge Hill: Ridge Hill west will transmit D2 on ch 29 at 20 kW targeted atCheltenham and north Gloucestershire. 9 Rosneath: In addition to the main 2˚kW horizontally polarised signal, Rosneath will radiatea separate low-power vertically polarised beam, covering Rosneath itself. 10 Rowridge: This site will radiate all post-DSO multiplexeswith both horizontal and vertical polarisation. All vertical services will be at 200˚kW ERP and should be less affected by co-channelinterference than the horizontal signals. Vertical aerials are recommended. 11 Rumster Forest: D4 will switch a few months after theother multilpexes in 2010. 12 Sheffield Crosspool: D1 will use a temporary parking channel from 39 to 63 and 100 W to 1 kW to avoidinteraction with Emley Moor HD roll out in March 2010. 13 Stockland Hill: D5-D6 will operate at 10 kW until 2012. 14 Sutton Coldfield:D4 & D5 will operate at 20 kW for a temporary period during 2011. 15 The Wrekin: D4 will use 31 and 39 at 2 kW and D5 & D6 willbe on ch 53 and ch 57 both at 1 kW for a temporary period during 2011. 16 Wenvoe: D5 will operate on ch 51 at 10 kW for atemporary period until 2011. 17 Winter Hill: D6 will operate at 12.5 kW until 2012.

Other sites will also be subject to transitional arrangements until the DSO process is complete. All DSO information is subject tochange.

1. Key to types:

Advance network HD content will initially be carried on a temporary 7th multiplex and UHF channel. Transmission will transfer tothe PSB3/BBC-B multiplex at DSO. Note that the temporary transmissions are relatively low-power.

At DSO The PSB3/BBC-B multiplex will carry HD transmissions starting on the DSO2 date for each site. The UHF channelnumbers and powers are reproduced here for convenience. Frequency offsets (+/-) are shown where theinformation is available

Retrofit HD content will be added to existing switched in the PSB3/BBC-B multiplex.

HD transmissions will use the new DVB-T2 standard with MPEG-4 coding and are not compatible with existing DVB-T/MPEG-2receivers.
