Winter 2014
Good end-of-semester to you all!
This is the last of our newsletters for 2014.
This was a good year for the Music
Department as we have many new students
and several ongoing initiatives – such as the
student pep band, the Arts Entrepreneurship
Minor, and the Teaching Credential/Music
Education program. We hope to establish
these programs in the spring.
Remaining Concerts: These include the
Chamber Ensembles concert (Dec. 4 7:30 in
Shiley), Lessons and Carols (Dec. 5 7:30 and
Dec. 7 2pm: Founders Chapel), the Gamelan
Ensemble concert (Dec. 9 7:30 in Shiley), the
Jazz Ensemble concert (Dec. 10 7:30 in
Shiley), the Student Recital (vocal & piano;
Dec. 11 12:15 in Shiley), the Mariachi concert
(Dec. 11 7:30 in Shiley), the Annual Messiah
Sing- and Play-Along (Dec. 12 7:30 and Dec.
14 2pm, in Founders Chapel), and the Digital
Audio Composition Student Recital (Dec. 16
in Shiley). Come check these wonderful
events out!
For those of you in San Diego during
Intersession, the Mariachi Showcase will be
held throughout Camino on January 15-18,
bringing to campus some of the greatest
Mariachi performers and educators in the
country. Spring semester will feature two
recitals: A senior recital by Kevin Nguyen and
a junior recital by Hayley Park. The Angelus
sacred music concert will also be a major
event. And, very importantly, I hope that many
of you will volunteer to help out as we hold the
Society for Ethnomusicology Southern
California/Hawaii Chapter Conference on
campus on Feb 28-March 1. We will have
students and scholars from throughout the
region giving presentations on a wide variety of
topics and will hold a special evening of
performances.
Course News for the Spring: In addition to our
regular slate of spring courses, four special
topics courses are scheduled. Dr. Pfau is
teaching the topic Music and Therapy in
MUSC 333 Pro-seminar in Musicology, I am
teaching the topic Introduction to
Ethnomusicology in MUSC 440W Topics in
Ethnomusicology, Dr. Adler is teaching the
topic Rhythm and Tim in MUSC 494 Special
Topics in Music Theory/Composition, and Dr.
Kaiser is teaching the new MUSC 421
Interactive Digital Music and Arts. Please
participate in an ensemble (or two)! You have
several choices: Chamber Music Ensembles,
Concert Choir, Jazz Ensemble, Opera
Workshop, Gamelan Ensemble, and Mariachi
Ensemble.
Good news: More sound rock/attenuation will
be added to the renovated spaces Camino 140-
145 in January. And, all external windows are
supposed to be double-paned during Spring
Break. These efforts should stem most of the
sound bleed problems some of you have
experienced in the practice rooms.
Dr. Yeung will be on sabbatical leave in the spring. Although she will occasionally be around the Department, please say goodbye to her
before the end of the semester. Replacing her as Chamber Music Ensembles instructor in the spring will be Ramon Negron.
I hope that you all have enjoyed this eventful semester! It was Dr. Amrein’s first and she has already made a very positive impact in the
Department. I want to extend thanks to several people: Anh Le has been very capably serving as Student Intern. Jeff Kaiser continues
his excellent service as Concert Manager. And, Marilou continues to excel and improve our Department as our Executive Assistant; she
has a smile for everyone.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you all!

Christopher Adler Christopher Adler travelled to Northern Illinois
University for a week-long residency with the nief-norf Project,
where he premiered a new composition by Los Angeles composer
Nicholas Deyoe, and performed a trio by Evan Ziporyn. He also
performed his composition Ecstatic Volutions in a Neon Haze with
the students of the NIU New Music Ensemble, and coached a
performance by the NIU Percussion Ensemble of his percussion
quintet Pines Long Slept in Sunshine.
In January, Dr. Adler will perform in the annual soundON Festival
of Modern Music at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library in La
Jolla, with the ensemble NOISE. The performances feature works
by modern composers James Erber, Pierre Boulez, Elliott Carter
and many others, including multiple world premieres. The festival
includes concerts on January 8, 10 and 11, as well as a workshop in
contemporary music for musicians at all levels. For more
information about the festival, visit www.sandiegonewmusic.com Christopher Adler (piano) performing his composition Ecstatic Volutions in
a Neon Haze with nief-norf cellist Ashley Walters and students of the NIU
New Music Ensemble.
In June, 2015, Christopher Adler will be composition faculty at the
2015 nief-norf Summer Festival held at the University of Tennessee in
Knoxville. The festival includes opportunities for composers,
performers of all instruments, and scholars, to come together for two
weeks in an intensive workshop environment dedicated to
contemporary music. Please talk to Dr. Adler if you would like to
learn more about this innovative summer festival opportunity.
David Harnish During the last part of this semester, I presented a paper titled “The
Musical Lives of Processions” at the Society for Ethnomusicology
conference in Pittsburgh. While there, I co-accepted the Bruno Nettl Prize for the
Longing for the Past publication (2013) of early 20th-century Southeast Asian
recordings, annotations and descriptions. I also sat in on one piece of a conference
performance by the Dangdut Cowboys. My review of Andy McGraw’s Radical
Transformations: Reimagining Culture in Balinese Contemporary Music was
published in Sojourn 29 (3). As faculty Liaison for the Kyoto Symposium, I attend
the Kyoto Prize Ceremony in November honoring three outstanding individuals.
The Arts and Philosophy laureate, Fukumi Shimura, will come to give a Symposium
at USD on March 19. She is a master kimono maker, using only plant dyes of
hundreds of hues that she collects and mixes herself from the environment. Ms.
Shimura is a major figure in the Mingei folk arts movement in Japan and founded a
school to instruct students in both the philosophy of Mingei and the techniques
necessary to mix colors and harmonize human and natural worlds within kimono
design. It was an honor to meet her and it is always an honor to meet Princess
Takamado, who is the Honorary Chair of the Kyoto Prize Ceremony. As usual, I
also performed a few gigs in LA with La Revancha, a Latin rock band. Dr. Harnish jamming with the Dangdut Cowboys,

Jeff Kaiser was interviewed in October at length by Darwin Grosse for "Art
+ Music + Technology," an ongoing series featuring many prominent artists using new
technologies in the visual and sonic art worlds. http://artmusictech.libsyn.com/podcast-
049-jeff-kaiser
From Grosse’s site: “It's hard to compartmentalize Jeff Kaiser. He's a monster trumpet
player, a music label impresario, ethnomusicologist and technologist. Somehow, he finds
a way to live his life where he can be all of these things - all of the time. He's a force, but
also an incredibly nice guy to talk to.
In our chat, we talk about coming out of a religious music background, driving into (and
through) an academic endevour, and coming out the other side with a hard-to-define
career. We also talk about words, which might sound funny, but it really important when
you think about how people interact with art and music's place in history.”
Jeff Kaiser
Jeff Kaiser performing a concert with the great
Marco Eneidi last spring at Club Celeste in
Vienna, Austria. Marianne Pfau Dr. Pfau looks forward to a very busy Advent and Christmas Season, with numerous performances in the Bay Area and in
Germany between 1st of Advent and January 6 (Epiphany) 2015. One will be a concert at St. Jacob’s in Hamburg, with works by Bach,
Telemann and Mattheson. All three Baroque composers worked at that same church some 300 years ago.
In celebration of Bach’s 330th birthday in Spring 2015, Dr. Pfau will offer two related events. One is a lecture for USD’s Bridges
Academy on Feb 25 2015, “Measures of Grace: Thoughts on Bach's Cantatas 138, 164, and 187." The other is the annual Lenten
concert on the Angelus Early Music Series in Founders Chapel, on March 21 2015, 7 pm. The concert features live
performance of these three cantatas by Bach, with commentary, and offers the opportunity to hear four fine guest
soloist; Rita Lily (soprano), Christopher Fritzsche (haute-contre), John Russel (tenor) and Jeffrey Fields (bass),
joined by San Francisco’s Jubilate Baroque Orchestra performing on historical instruments.
For Women’s History Month, Dr. Pfau will give a lecture for the Oceanside Art Museum’s distinguished speakers
series, entitled: “Songs of the Living Light: Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1178) as Composer.”
And Dr. Pfau is looking forward to her newest course at USD, the Pro-Seminar on Music Therapy, MUSC 333.
Students from Music, Theatre, and Psychology will work together, exploring music’s power of healing.
Violinist/violist Alyze Dreiling was born in Detroit, Michigan, beginning her studies with Mischa Mischakoff and
graduating from Indiana University where she studied with Josef Gingold. Relocating to San Diego, she joined the
adjunct faculty at USD, as well as the faculty for the USD Chamber Music Festival and the adjunct faculty at Grossmont College. She is
the violinist with Trio Licenza, the piano trio in residence at USD, and she also performs as violist with Grossmont Symphony String
Quartet and she is the violinist with the California Consort, founded by contrabassist, Bertram Turetzky. In 2014, Dreiling achieved
third place nationally in the youth orchestra division of the American Prize in Conducting competition.

Angela Yeung Dr. Yeung's Greater San Diego Chamber Orchestra performed at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts in September and at the California Center for the Arts in Escondido in November, in addition to accompanying music faculty Edmund Stein and Ramon Negron in Shiley Theatre, also in November. Her Greater San Diego Chamber Chorus, accompanied by the Chamber Orchestra, performed the Mass of St Cecilia by Gounod at the San Rafael Cathoic Church in October, with music faculty Therese Bulat as soprano soloist. Student Instrumentalist Recital
On Saturday, November 22nd five student
instrumentalists put on a great recital
performing music by Saint-Saens,
Beethoven, and more. We loved seeing the
students take initiative to put on this
concert and we hope to see more in the
future.

Adam Johnson’s Alumnus Concert
This year, the world marks the 100th anniversary of the
outbreak of the First World War. On November 10 & 11,
2014, under the direction of Dr. Emilie Amrein, the USD
Choral Scholars and Concert Choir presented a moving
program of sacred choral literature in commemoration of
this event.
Music alumnus, pianist and composer Adam Johnson (Eros)
‘00 performed his own music in his unique and quirky style.
The concert featured music faculty Dr. Angela Yeung, USD
music alumni and special guests. A truly enjoyable event for
all!

San Diego recently held an International Leadership Conference and one of USD’s own chamber group took part of it.
The group was part of an experiment to demonstrate leadership skills that are inherent in performing groups.
The musicians tell us a bit about their experience...
Anh Le: “It was a great experience. I got to see how each of us takes up the leadership role and that was very eye-opening.”
William Carleton: “It was interesting to think more about how playing as a quartet applies to other sorts of cooperative work and
leadership roles.”
Julia Francone: “I learned to be really flexible. It was not at all what I expected, but I wasn't sure what to expect. It was really interesting
and I really enjoyed the experience. We interacted with the audience a lot compared
to a performance. They were really responsive and I'm glad I got to have that
experience.”
Mae Frank: “It was nice to hear the feedback of our audience and how much they
appreciated our music. Their feedback reminded us why we play music in the first
place.”
