Throughout the Christmas season, we are called to share Christ’s love with those around us. To
do that, we need your help.
Your generous online donations are needed now to help sustain our ministries that reflect
the promise of God’s love throughout the year. COVID-19 and news of its variants continue to
cause upheaval and uncertainty, giving our ministries added importance. Your kindness will
help families all around us.
We prayerfully request that you consider signing up for eGiving from your computer,
smartphone or tablet. You can set up a recurring donation or make a one-time gift.
Thank you for your continued support of our

There is no rectory on our parish campus and we currently do not have a permanent home for our pastor, Father Trung, and future priest (s) or seminarians. At the end of June, we established the Rectory Fund to raise money to purchase a home in a nearby neighborhood. The goal for this fund is $400,000 for the purchase, furnishings and monthly expenses for the remainder of this fiscal year. We have raised approximately one-third of the funds needed so far and have now begun to look for a home near the church, either existing or new
construction, which will meet the needs of our parish and remain within this budget.
We are grateful for the positive response and generosity of parishioners and friends so far to raise the necessary funds. There will be a second collection on the third Sunday of each month for this fund, but we need additional gifts. If you have not done so, please prayerfully consider how you may be able to help us make our goal. There are yellow envelopes at the doors of the church or you can give online through Faith Direct.
Goal: $400,000 Gifts as of 12/5/2021: $130,441

Third Sunday of Advent / Tercer Domingo de Adviento
“From silly devotions and sour-faced saints, good Lord, deliver us!" St. Teresa of Avila
We’ve all heard the adage, “Laughter is the best medicine.” In many ways, it really is. When was the last time you really laughed? The gift of imagination allows us to see possible things that are yet to be. Imagine a world filled with laughter. We take life too seriously sometimes. Fear, uncertainty, pressure, negativity, disappointment, and myriad
other human experiences can rob us of the joy needed for laughter. God never promised us an easy road, and we do have to take the course of our lives seriously. However, there is a balance to be sought and a possible joy that can be brought even to the darkest and most challenging of encounters. St. Therese of Lisieux reminds us that, “Joy is not found in the material objects surrounding us but in the inner recesses of the soul. One can possess joy in a prison cell as well as in a palace.” Falling in love with God, who is present in all of creation, allows us to bring a depth of understanding to everything we do and experience. We can more easily see above and beyond things while pursuing the only One who can truly satisfy our hearts. When we realize that God, the king of Israel, is in our midst and with us, there is no further misfortune to fear. We can celebrate the wonder and beauty of God’s gift of joy. It is no wonder that many saints radiate joy and have no reservations expressing laughter. They are happy because they have found a pearl of great price. We celebrate with joy today with hearts filled with expectation, wonder, awe, and beauty as we ready ourselves, even more excitedly, for the coming of our Savior. Do not fear and do not be discouraged. If you haven’t laughed in a while, why? Something is preventing you from expressing the magnificence of your soul and the presence of God who dwells within. God’s power and presence within us assures us that we are loved and kept in that presence. What more is really needed? Rejoice and laugh in the presence of God! It really is the best medicine and a most perfect way to convince others that God is really with us. “Go ahead, laugh! Live your life with joy and serve the Lord with laughter! Joy, with peace, is the sister of charity. Serve the Lord with laughter.” (St. Padre Pio of Pietrelcina)

Wednesday Bible Study Mary: A Biblical Walk with the Blessed Mother
Have you ever wondered why Mary is so important to our faith as Catholics? We turn to her in prayer, in the Mass, in the Rosary, and in Marian devotions. We honor her with special feasts celebrating the significant events in her life. We place images of her in our churches and homes.
Join us for Mary: A Biblical Walk with the Blessed Mother, an extraordinary study that reveals Mary's unique role in God's Kingdom and in our lives. Filmed on location in the Holy Land, Mary: A Biblical Walk with the Blessed Mother will place you in the midst of the powerful drama of her earthly life, taking you through her joys and her sorrows. You will learn how she works in our lives today, drawing us ever closer to her divine Son. Mary will become a part of your daily life and help you to become more like Christ. The Bible study will meet in the Connie Bowers Discipleship Center, room 115, beginning 11/3/2021 at 1:00pm and continuing every Wednesday. For more information, call Cami Chedster at 281-489-8720 or email [email protected].

Important Changes to Pre-Baptismal Classes Starting in January, the Baptism classes will be in person. They will be on the
First and Second Thursdays every month (except for April which is shifted
down for Holy Week) here at SHOJ from 7:30pm - 9pm. Parents must take
both session 1 and session 2 to complete their preparation for Infant Baptism. If you miss one class, you can take
it the following month. Classes in English and Spanish will be offered at the same time on both days. The
Sponsor/Godparent class will be online on the fourth Thursdays of the month from 6:30-7:30pm in English and
7:30-8:30pm in Spanish. Godparents can choose to take this class with the parents OR take the class online.
NEW GODPARENT/SPONSOR CLASS! We will have an online class for Godparents/Sponsors on the fourth Thursday of the month starting in January 2022. It will be a zoom class from 7:30pm-9:00pm that will go over the role and responsibilities of Godparents/Sponsors. This will include Godparent/Sponsors for Infant Baptism, RCIA/RICA, as well as Confirmation sponsors for both youth and adults. The goal is to better help sponsors understand the importance of the role they are undertaking and get them more involved in the Sacramental preparation process. It will be offered online for those sponsors who live further away - even those who live in another country. Godparent/Sponsors need only attend one of these classes. English and Spanish will be offered concurrently in the same date and time period but with different links. Although it is ideal that those who are infant Baptism Godparents attend both the pre-baptismal class and the sponsor class, they need only attend one or the other to get class credit. The material taught in these two classes is different and the focus for the Godparent class is how they can be the best Godparent/sponsor for the child/adult they are sponsoring. Call the Parish Office for more information and to register for class.

Pregnant and parenting moms in need are in our parishes and our neighborhoods. As Pope Francis reminds us, our parishes need to be “islands of mercy in the midst of the sea of indifference.”
In order to assess, expand, and better communicate resources to local pregnant moms and families in need, our parish is joining a nationwide effort entitled: “Walking with Moms in Need.”
We invite all parishioners to join us as we embark on this effort to serve mothers in need in our community. If you are interested in becoming involved contact: Lynette Salmon 832-621-8715 or [email protected]

A name that means
“light,” St. Lucy (283 –
304) is the patron saint of
those blind or suffering
with eye trouble. Not
much is known about her
life, except that she was
determined to remain a
virgin and thus refused
marriage. History tells
the story of a frustrated
suitor who eventually
accused St. Lucy of
being a Christian (at crime at the time), and she was
executed in Syracuse, Sicily, in the year 304.
Today, we celebrate a number of traditions that
incorporate symbolic meaning of St. Lucy as the
“bearer” of light in the darkness of winter. This is
particularly seen in Scandinavian countries, with
their long dark winters. There, a young girl dressed
in a white dress and a red sash (as the symbol of
martyrdom) carries palms and wears a crown or
wreath of candles on her head. In Denmark,
Norway and Sweden, girls dressed as Lucy carry
rolls and cookies in procession as songs are sung.
