Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
In the 1962 comic book “Amazing Fantasy #15” after Spiderman (Peter Parker) delivers Uncle Ben’s killer to the police, our hero walks gilt-stricken into the moonlit night with a narrative caption stating, “With great power, comes great responsibility.” It is a statement which cap-tures the identity and motto of Spiderman better than any other superhero and strikes a challenge to the reader to consider one’s own power and responsibility. Howev-er, this comic is not the origin of the statement. Most analysts would agree that it comes from an author, whose name is lost to history, writing in 1793 the decrees for the French National Convention. With no intended offense towards the French revolution, I believe that the true inspiration is Christ and the source document is the Gospel of Luke (12:48) which we hear this Sunday and states, “Much will be required of the person entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more.”
Even though the Spiderman provides a good inspira-tion, the Gospel truly deepens the meaning and applica-tion to a much greater level. In the Spiderman quote, the responsible demand comes from that fact that Peter Par-ker is no normal human being but rather a super-powered-spider-hero. To the credit of the comic story, our hero struggles with the choice of irresponsible and self-centered life, which would have ended in revenge for the life of Uncle Ben, versus turning the killer over to the police taking up the mantel of an altruistic hero’s life. He chooses the hero and this is a good point. However, the responsibility is dependent on the power.
The Gospel and the original source, hits each one of us between the eyes. We all have been entrusted with something from God and each of us is required to re-spond proportionately from what has been given. Peter, the first Pope, askes the important question, is the mes-sage “meant for us or everyone?” The answer is YES, you and everyone! The power given to all of us is life and freewill. Will we be responsible with that power given to us by God? Each one of us chooses to spend our lives given for ill or good; to be a villain or hero; to deny or ful-fill the demand of God for the gift.

Altar servers have the distinction of serving at the altar during our Masses. Their presence fills a vital role in the service. Through the actions they perform they enhance the understanding of the Mass and so the love of God. They have a place of honor at Mass because they assist the priest in many ways. If you are 3rd grade or older, and have received the Sacrament of the Eucharist, we are asking you to think about becoming a part of this ministry. The California Conference of Catholic Bishops is encour-aging the faithful to join in prayer in a Novena to defeat SB 24. SB 24 would mandate public universities in California to dispense abortion by medication techniques at on-campus student health centers. This bill is now fated to become law. Let us continue to pray to Our Lady of Gua-dalupe, patroness of unborn children, asking her interces-sion to defeat this bill.

Discovering Christ is an experience where

covering Christ consists of 7 sessions and
a retreat day.
Each session includes a meal, a time for
prayer, a video teaching and a small group discussion. What
is the meaning life? Why does Jesus matter? Do I need a
savior? Who is the Holy Spirit? are a few of the questions to
be discussed.
Discovering Christ is a time to renew, rethink and to Discov-
er Christ.
Participating in Discovering Christ is a way to meet people
and to build communities where the joys and struggles of
faith can be shared.

Question for Adults: Am I living “faithfully” every day of my life? Question for Children: What are some ways that God has shown his faithfulness to me?
