Sleeping Snake

Gauge is not that important with amigurumi. Big or small they will be cute no matter what! If your ami comes out larger or smaller, simply adjust the size of embroidery details on the snake's face so that the appearance stays the same.

One more little suggestion I have for you before you begin crocheting:

I prefer to use Red Heart Super Saver yarn. It is an acrylic based yarn which is

thicker and sturdier than many other yarn brands on the market.

**Rule of Thumb: softer, thinner yarns will make your ami smaller in size; rougher, thicker yarns will make your ami larger. Just try to be consistent.

Hook Size: F

Materials Needed:

● Crochet Hook: F ● White Yarn (Red Heart Super Saver) ● Black Embroidery Thread ● Polyester Fiberfill Stuffing ● Yarn Needle/Embroidery Needle

Skills Needed / Terms Used:

● Magic Ring Technique ● Crocheting in the Round ● Sc – Single Crochet ● Inc – Increase ● Invdec – Invisible Decrease ● Sl st – Slip Stitch ● FO – Finish Off, Bind Off

For Beginning Crocheters: Here are examples of how to read the instructions in this pattern.

Instruction: R7: (3sc, inc) around - 30 This should read as: R7: (sc in next 3 stitches, 2sc in next stitch) repeat around - 30 stitches at the end of this round.

Instruction: R18: 4sc, (invdec, sc) 4 times, 4sc - 16 This should read as: R18: sc in next 4 stitches, (invdec1, sc in next stitch) repeat 4 times, sc in next 4 stitches - 16 stitches at the end of this round.

**Stuff Head**

Begin Body (with White):

**Make sure to stuff body as you go, every inch or two** R20-140: sc around (until snake is approximately 2 feet long) - 14 R141: 12sc, invdec - 13 R142-151: sc around (approx. 2 inches) - 13 R152: 11sc, invdec - 12 R153-162: sc around (approx. 2 inches) - 12 R163: 10sc, invdec - 11 R164-173: sc around (approx. 2 inches) - 11 R174: 9sc, invdec - 10 R175-184: sc around (approx. 2 inches) - 10 R185: 8sc, invdec - 9 R186-192: sc around - 9

Make sure to pay careful attention to any instructions within this pattern that are separated by **(Instruction)**. These are crucial to the outcome of your amigurumi.

Time to Embroider!

For the eye details, you will need a thick piece of embroidery thread (all 6 strands) and a smaller piece of embroidery thread (2 strands). **Make sure stitch marker is at bottom of Head during eye placement**

Tie off end of thick piece of embroidery thread. Insert threaded needle around R6 of Head making sure that knot is secured tightly inside Head. Count over to R10 and go back down into the Head with threaded needle, creating a black line. Put first needle off to side.

Take up 2 strand piece of embroidery thread with knotted end and going through inside of Head, take small stitches (approx. 3) around thick thread, going up and down through the same hole, pulling the thick piece of thread down to form an arch.

Gently pull thick strand of thread and tie off inside the head. Gently pull thin strand of thread and tie off inside the head.

Here is another angle showing how to pull down the thicker piece of embroidery thread with the smaller (2 strand) piece. By going around the big strand of thread in this way, you are fastening it down into the shape that you want. Repeat process for both eyes on either side of the head.

To finish off the tail, complete stuffing, then weave end of yarn through remaining 5 stitches and pull tight. This will close the gap at the tip. Secure end of yarn inside and cut off excess hiding the rest inside the body of the snake.
