on

Satellite Beach United Methodist Church

Where there is no Vision, the people

perish.

Election years are becoming more and more of a trial.

It seems from now till November, all the commercials

will tell you what a terrible person their opponent is.

Social Media is alive with all sorts of opinions being

expressed about what is right or wrong with our

town, state and country. Sadly, over the past 20

some years as a pastor, I have seen many a Christian

putting down people for their political stance. Even

more sadly, is that too many Christians don’t believe

they are doing it. But both Republicans and

Democrats believe anyone who is an opponent is

almost less than a human being. We have stopped

listening to one another and that is very sad.

If our churches are going to reclaim the true high

ground, then we must have the same passion for

Christ and his kingdom as we seem to have for our

political candidate. We need to passionately believe

and act on our belief that without Christ, there is no

hope. If we truly believed that people would die if

something was not done, we would be shouting and

doing as much as we can. People are doing that not

only with politics, but with environmental and drug

issues as well. The church needs passionate

disciples.

I read an interesting tidbit the other day, and it sank

into me that I am not as passionate as I need to be.

The article asked a simple question about time. It

went as follows:

How Long Has It Been Since You...

Took the time to go see someone who lives alone?

Wrote a note or letter to someone who was on

your mind?

Read the Bible to someone too ill to read for

themselves?

Encouraged someone who was having a hard time

being a Christian?

Prayed earnestly for someone who was dealing

with a lot of stuff?

Tried to talk seriously about Christ with someone

you knew was lost?

Told a teenager or young adult that you were

proud of his or her efforts to live for the Lord?

Spent more time on your knees praying rather

than fretting about something?

EVERY CHRISTIAN CAN DO SOMETHING TO

ENCOURAGE SOMEONE ELSE!

It is our calling. It should be our passion.

Next time you want to tell someone your political

views, try sharing with them a hope you have instead.

This world and especially our young people need to

know there is a hope out there beyond a political

answer. The early church understood this as they

dealt with Nero, Caligula, Domitian, and many other

Roman Emperors. The early church knew that the

answer was to transform people by becoming

disciples of Christ.

That is still true today. Jesus said they will know we

are Christians by our love, not by our social media

posts. Let our action show our love of Christ. This is

our hope for the future, not the next elected official.

Blessings and Peace,

Pastor Harry

Florida United Methodist Children’s Home’s

Every couple of years, the Children’s Home goes through the process of re-viewing their long term goals and values to make certain they are providing the best services and care for the children. Now their new vision statement will be:

Creating wholeness in children and families through Christ.

SBUMC gave $2,157.75 to the Children’s Home in April to support of the lives of the children. Their primary goal is for each of the youth to hear that God lived and died and rose again so that all may have the oppor-

DINING OUT IN AUGUST

by Lil Moore

WELCOME to our new Dining Out Restaurant—SUN ON THE BEACH We are pleased to have SUN ON THE BEACH in our program. They will take Double’s place and will offer their fine hospitality in this month. Sun on the Beach has served great breakfasts and lunches to our community for many years. They now have casual outdoor seating right on the ocean. Their menu specializes in a large variety of dishes, and some with a southern flair. You will love their shrimp and grits. I love their fried green tomatoes, and Don loves their variety of burgers and delicious fries.

They are located at 1753 A1A, south Satellite Beach on the ocean in the strip mall. Their hours are: 6:30 am to 2:00 pm—seven days a week. Their phone number is: 321-777-9483. I assured Seth and Gary, owners/managers, that they would find this opportunity a great one, and it would be “win-win” for them and SBUMC.

Most importantly, please remember to write SBUMC on your bill every time you eat there and tell the server that you are from the church. (If you forget, like we have at times, just call back and ask them to add SBUMC to your bill)

Thank you all for supporting our successful Dining Out Program that was started in 2007 and has helped with our Kitchen remodeling and now the Fellowship Hall.

Habitat for Humanity

Do we have any church members with a passion for Habitat for Humanity? Habitat has just finished an

Apostle Build in the Booker T. Washington section of Melbourne and SBUMC was a part of that through our

donations, from the church budget and from miscellaneous missions fund. They will be starting a new Apos-

tle Build in the fall. Unlike our past Habitat houses that we fully funded and did all the construction on, the

Apostle Builds are done by a group of churches with a number a churches contributing as they are

able. Habitat will need volunteers to build and lunch providers, as well as funding. If anyone thinks they

might want to help organize even one lunch or get a small group together to build for a day or two, contact

me, and I will arrange for the Habitat staff to come to the church to tell us how we can help. Contact Ann

Montgomery at [email protected] if you are interested. God’s love is visible in the work they do.

Bendiciones - Cuba Vision

We have our 2019 Cuba Mission Team! Stacy, Louverture, Achaia & Asa Jones, Will Eldridge, & Dave & Carolyn Glick will travel to our sister church in Mir, Cuba, Jan 16-23, 2019. And YOU—each & every member of SBUMC—are a member of the Team! Whether you go or not, your help is needed, especially your prayers.

The Team will be engaged in Evangelism Through Sports & needs donations of sports equipment. They also need 2 lightweight suitcas-es each, & over-the-counter medications—sealed, unopened, not expired. There is a box at the front of the sanctuary by the Sharing Center baskets for your donations.

The Cuban government allows each person to take in 20 pounds of OTC meds & we want to be sure our Team Mem-bers each take the maximum allowed. We must use money from the Cuba General account to buy whatever is not donated. If you prefer, you may make cash contributions by marking your giving envelope “Cuba Gen.”

We also need to raise money to replace their old keyboard which is on its last legs. Music is such an integral part of worship in Cuba that this is an essential need. For every $20 received, we will color in one key on the Keyboard 4 Cuba poster in the narthex.

We depleted the Cuba Gen account when we sent them money for a sidewalk alongside the parsonage & for much needed repairs to the bathroom. The sidewalk is now in. They have some of the needed materials for the bathroom repairs & are trying to find the remaining materials they need. They were also able to buy some chairs to add to the seating in the sanctuary. Again, thank you for your continued support & prayers.

DANGER vs. OPPORTUNITY

Did you realize. . .that the average crisis lasts for about six weeks? By the end of a month

and a half, people usually come to some solution. Sometimes the solutions are good. But

sometimes they just cause more painful problems. With the help of God and your Stephen Minister,

we can help people find a positive resolution to crises.

For more information about Stephen Ministry, call Pastor Harry at 777-0116 or Mary Mutter at

All classes for children 5-11 years of age are held in Faithland —our kids corner. We offer Children’s Church for both the 9:00 and 11:00 AM Sunday morning services, with Sunday School at 10:10 AM in between. You can expect your child’s faith is being strengthened while learning God’s word and enjoying some fellowship. Oh, and we feed them, too! Please be sure to note my new phone number, and I ask that you call or text me with your numbers as well, and I will save them.

VERY SPECIAL THANKS

VBS 2018 was a success - praise the good Lord above! I am so incredibly thankful for our team of teens and adults who helped make this possible. There’s absolutely no way I could have pulled it off without each of you. Your time, resources, support and love, for our children’s ministry and the community, were (are) such tremendous blessings to all who were touched by this event. To me, volunteers are those who demonstrate what is means to be Jesus’ hands and feet, and I’m just forever grateful because SBUMC has the best of the best!

Capital Campaign Update - July 2018

We have reached the two thirds point in our three year campaign to fund a number of capital improvement projects for

our facilities. During this first portion of the campaign, we have raised a little over two thirds of the $444,000 that was pledged, or about $310,000. These funds have enabled us to complete several projects. Most noticeable are the bath-

rooms at the entrances to the sanctuary which have been completely redesigned and updated. Security lighting has been installed throughout the campus. Campus wide Wi-Fi and fiber optic internet service is now available. Two new

air conditioners have been installed. New roofs were installed on the sanctuary, the preschool and the Y building.

Most recently new sidewalks at The Rock and the busport slab have been poured. Given approval but not yet complet-

ed are moving the busport , a new roof for The Rock and a new roof for an additional area of the sanctuary.

As additional funds are received, Church Council will determine which additional projects will be accomplished. Thank

BELL CHOIR NEWS

I'm excited about having a bell choir at SBUMC! A few ringers gathered in June for some

preliminary practice, and our entire choir will begin in earnest on Wednesday, October 3,

5:30 -6:30 pm. Chancel choir members—time has been coordinated with Sharon. You have

permission to be a little late to choir practice. Practices will be held in the classroom directly

behind the sanctuary sound booth.

PLEASE, PLEASE let me know if you would like to play. No former experience necessary.

For those who have already expressed an interest, please confirm whether the Wednesday time will work for

you, so if we need to make an adjustment, we will do so. If your schedule does work for you to participate

this fall, no worries! We will practice/play in the spring and would love to have you join us then.

Any questions/comments, please contact me (voice or text) 321-616-4384.

Shawna Brkich, Children & Youth Director [email protected] (321-423-5937)

Summer Break is officially over, and it’s already that time again. School bells will soon be ringing with our children returning for another year of learning and growing. As they do, let’s cover them in prayer.

Heavenly Father, we lift up every child returning back to school. Please protect them by keeping them safe from seen and unseen dangers. Give our children favor with their teachers, help them to stay focused, and let this be their best year yet! We also pray for their teachers, that their expectations would be reasonable, and their teaching styles under-standable, and please graciously bless every teacher with patience, wisdom, and administrative support as needed. Oh Lord, equip our children with the ability to resist peer pressure. Strengthen them to make wise decisions that are pleas-ing unto you. Surround them with Godly influences - friends who will positively impact their lives. Please show our chil-dren how to work out their differences to avoid fighting, violence and bullying at any level. Empower them to be a reflection of Your light and goodness, to stand up for the weak, and to always do the right thing, even if it’s the hard thing. Lastly, build up each parent according to what our children need so that we can support them in all of their endeavors. Please extend to us grace when we fall short, and let us never forget that sometimes our greatest contribution to the Kingdom of God isn’t what we do but who we raise. In Your Holy Name we pray. Amen.

Why Still Sing the Great Hymns?

“They are powerful because they speak to us” replied Pastor Harry Holloman of SBUMC, when asked this question. Many contemporary artists are using the great hymns for rich text and re-mix of the melody. Listed below are some examples we hear today:

“Blessed Assurance” - Third Day “Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus” - Casting Crowns

“Great Is Thy Faithfulness” - Chris Rice

“I Need Thee Every Hour” - Jars of Clay

“Holy, Holy, Holy” - Steven Curtis Chapman

“Crown Him with Many Crowns” - Robin Mark

“How Great Thou Art” - Carrie Underwood

“Amazing Grace (My Chains are Gone)” - Chris Tomlin “O Worship the King” - Chris Tomlin “It Is Well with My Soul” - Matt Redman & Hillsong Worship

“Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus” (Look Up) - Nichole Nordeman

“Nothing But the Blood” - Matt Redman

“All Creatures of Our God and King” - Newsboys

“Come Thou Fount” - Jadon Lavik

“Jesus Paid It All” - Shane & Shane

“Be Thou My VIsion” - Ascend the Hill
