“The SAVES program is very similar to the force protection conditions,” said Stephanie Wynn, 19th Airlift Wing community support coordinator. “There are three levels that are colored coded: green, yellow and red depending on the amount of incidents occurring within a 60-day rolling period.” Saves LEVEL ONE indicates a steady state where day-to-day operations are meant to be maintained indefinitely, similar to FPCON Alpha. This includes random entry point checks at base gates.

Airman 1st Class Zachary Perkins, 19th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron crew chief, was named the 2017 Air Force Entertainer of the Year runner-up in Group 1 – non-vocal category for dance Dec. 12.

Perkins, a four-year animation dancer, danced to “Voice of Reason” by Haywyre in the online video talent contest sponsored by the Air Force Services Activity.

“Dance is something I do for physical

fitness and fun,” Perkins said. “Receiving recognition for it through the contest is heartwarming.”

The winners were chosen via online voting and the finalists were reviewed by a panel of professional judges.

The acts were judged on technical excellence, showmanship and treatment and interpretation of the material. Perkins was awarded $500 which he intends to invest in his dancing.

“I want to buy a new pair of dance shoes,” Perkins laughed. “My old ones are pretty ragged.”

The Cyber Security Incident Response training, which is part of a program developed by a civilian entity accredited by the Department of Homeland Securi-ty, targeted critical infrastructure within a simulated city, created by Metova Cybercents, and uncovered potential cyber security susceptibilities. The training environment is a new concept within an already established learning curriculum and was designed specifically for this exercise.

“We know that critical infrastruc-tures are susceptible to a cyber-attack,” said Scott Terry, Associate Divisions Director, at the Texas A&M Engineering Department’s Cyber Readiness Center. “The important role that cyber operators play is so vital, we know we need to help them. The unique training environment helps the participants get some hands-on training that they won’t have the opportu-nity to get anywhere else.”

Cyber specialists from multiple fields and backgrounds were able to participate in the training. Arkansas businesses, state and city departments, and the Arkansas Army and Air National Guard members joined in the event, strengthening their cyber capabilities. The ability to integrate cyber practices across multiple sectors and platforms is integral to successful cyber security incident response.

“The Arkansas National Guard already has the ability to coordinate, train, assist and advise on anything cyber,” said Maj. Scott Anderson, the 189th OG, Det. 1, Director of Operations. “If one of the state agencies or co-ops in Arkansas needs help, they are able to go through the emergency management process to request assistance from the Nation-al Guard. We work for the governor and the state as well as support our federal

mission. All they have to do is ask.”The training is part of a six-delivery

grant cycle. This means that there are very limited courses available for cyber operators to attend. An organization’s ability to find value in the training and promote it within their unit upon comple-tion is key to developing further training opportunities such as this response course. The course, built specifically to meet training requirements within the cyber community is one of several elements of the cyber training regimen that enhances the skills of the Airmen, Soldiers and civilians who are entrust-ed with protecting the Nation’s critical infrastructure.

“As a whole, building and executing cyber events like this is key to success-ful cyber operations,” Anderson said. “The class is geared toward people who will benefit seeing this in a controlled environment so they will know how to react in a real-world situation.”

WASHINGTON (AFNS) – Air Force officials announced Jan. 4, Enlisted Performance Reports are no longer required for regular Air Force Airmen in the grade of airman first class and below with less than 36 months’ Time-In-Service or Air Reserve Component Airmen below the grade of senior airman.

This policy change supports Air Force senior leaders’ focus on revitalizing the squadron and saving Airmen time. It is intended to eliminate an unnecessary adminis-trative requirement and empower frontline supervisors, raters and commanders to frequently engage with their Airmen face-to-face, said Lt. Gen. Gina Grosso, deputy chief of staff for Manpower, Personnel and Services.

“While the Air Force values the contributions of all enlisted person-nel, the requirement to document performance in a formal evaluation

prior to the grade of senior airman is not necessary,” said Grosso.

Instead, the Air Force has additional means available to document an Airman’s performance and to ensure he or she is meeting the training, developmental and experi-ential skills required to perform as professional Airmen.”

Performance feedback and Airmen Comprehensive Assess-ments will still be required. Initial feedback sessions will occur within 60 days of raters taking over as supervisors and then every 180 days until an EPR occurs.

The removal of EPRs prior to promotion to senior airman will allow Airmen more time to learn their primary skills and missions before their performance is documented on an EPR, Grosso said.

All active-duty enlisted Airmen will receive their initial evaluation upon reaching their first March 31

Static Close-out Date after either promotion to senior airman, or after completion of a minimum of 36 months’ time-in-service, regard-less of grade, whichever occurs first. All Air Force Reserve Component enlisted Airmen will receive initial evaluations upon the first March 31 SCOD as a senior airman.

Commanders still retain the option to complete a Directed By Commander evaluation to document substandard performance for those airmen first class and below any time after an Airman reaches 20 months’ Time-In-Service. If a Directed By Commander evaluation is written, the Airman will receive a subsequent evaluation the following March 31 SCOD.

More information about the policy change is available at myPers.

Events that occur in early childhood can create the foundation of someone’s life; they have a monumental effect on one’s future.

Airman Tristan Liberty, a 19th Logistics Readiness Squadron mission generating vehicle equipment appren-tice, wouldn’t be where he is today if it weren’t for his grandfather, Danny Crosland.

Growing up in Lexington, S.C., Liberty worked on cars with his older brother at his grandfather’s shop, Dan’s Automotive.

“When I was in elementary school, he would come pick us up and we would spend time with him instead of going to day care,” Liberty said. “We would work at the shop with him and learn everything we could.”

His grandfather taught him basic mechanic skills such as changing tires, oil changes, and battery and electrical systems.

Liberty knew exactly what he wanted to be when he grew up.

“I came into the Air Force knowing I wanted to be a mechanic because of my grandfather,” Liberty said. “Because of what I was taught growing up, I was very

With tax season around the corner, it’s import-ant to know what’s real and fake in regards to communicating with the Internal Revenue Service.

Thousands of people have lost millions of dollars and their personal information to tax scams and fake IRS correspon-dence, according to the IRS.

A vital thing to know to help protect yourself from a scam is that the IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email, text messages or social media. It’s only by special circum-stances in which the IRS will call and is generally after an individual first receives several letters or notices from the IRS delivered by the United States Postal Service.

“The most common scam you get is a phone call from someone who says they work for the IRS, which is a red flag because the IRS rarely calls,” said Richard Tomaskovic, 19th Force Support Squadron core compliance expert for personal financial readiness. “They will say ‘you owe us back taxes, you need to hurry and pay’ followed by a threat of legal action or jail time.”

Threats like these are common scare tactics criminals use to trick victims into buying into their scams.

“They are always going to play off of your fear in these kind of scams,” Tomaskovic said. “Other scams might work off of your greed by saying you have a big tax return coming, but there is a processing fee in order to claim your tax return. There aren’t processing fees with the IRS.”

According to IRS.gov, scammers will

usually instruct victims to pay right away and ask for personal banking information over the phone. The IRS will only accept payments to the United States Treasury and won’t ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone.

“The IRS doesn’t call anybody, they send letters. If you owe the IRS money they are going to send you a letter and tell you how many days you have to respond. There isn’t an immediate crisis if you are dealing with the IRS,” Tomaskovic said.

It’s also important to look out for email scams with embedded links trying to gather personal information, according to Tomaskovic.

“Everyone is prone to being a victim,” Tomaskov-ic said. “Protect personally identifiable information; if it sounds too good, or too bad, to be true it probably is.”

The Airman and Family Readiness Center has three accredited financial counselors on base with

resources to help with a wide variety of financial matters. Tax season begins January 2018, with all normal returns being due April 15.

In recognition of service, U.S. military personnel are given a grace period regarding income tax filing and payment. If you are serving overseas during tax filing season, you are automatically granted a 2-month tax extension. If you serve in a combat zone or contin-gency operation area, you have additional options for tax extensions.

“If you feel like you may have already fallen victim, file a police report and call your bank or your credit card company,” Tomaskovic said. “You have fraud protection on your accounts for a reason; the sooner you report it the better.”

For more information on how to better protect yourself or reporting a scam visit https://www.irs.gov/.
