SELFLESS and passionate ishow Durban Natural ScienceMuseum Director Guy Red-man has described museumvolunteers at a recent cere-mony held in their honour.
“We are the mostutilised museum inthe country andpeople often wonderhow we cope. Thetruth is we could notdo it without the helpof volunteers who arealways there assistingwith initiatives,” saidRedman.
He saluted the con-tribution made by thevolunteers in helping themuseum to raise awarenessabout science and the naturalworld.
Coming in for special praisewas the museum’s Volunteerof the Year, Khululiwe Nxele,who received the award, plusa cheque for R500, donated bythe Durban Natural ScienceMuseum Friends Society.
Nxele was nominated for theaward by museum staff andother volunteers for herpassion and dedication.
Nxele said: “I did not expectthis. I am honoured that theyhave chosen me. I love work-ing here at the museum andsince I have started I have
learned a lot.” Nxele encouraged people to
join similar volunteer pro-grammes and acquire wideexperience and improve theiremployment prospects.
She said: “Learning aboutthe likes of Charles Darwin
and Alfred RusselWallace has made mea better person.
“I now know whatthey did to make thisworld a better placeand I hope I cancontribute too,” shesaid.
But Redman caut-ioned would-be vol-unteers to make surethey were committed
and not afraid of work.“Don’t join this programme
because you are bored andhave nothing to do,” he said.
Meanwhile, the museumhas relaunched its friend’ssociety. It aims to support themuseum’s education dep-artment and foster the dev-elopment of the institution.
Chairman of the society,Jabulani Memela, said: “Thesociety is a way of ensuringcollaboration to assist us ininnovate approaches toteaching.”

PRINTS, paintings, sculpturesand animation are among theworks on show at the KZNSchool Exhibition, whichopened at the Durban ArtGallery recently.
The annual exhibitiondraws entries from schoolsacross the province that offerart as an examinable subject.
Dustin Holohan, whomatriculated from MichaelHouse last year, is the creatorof a particularly striking
mixed media piece, entitledInches.
He said he was inspired bythe movie Any Given Sundaywhich stars Al Pacino as aninspirational American foot-ball coach.
“At the time people werevery negative about the 2010World Cup and other things inSouth Africa. My messagewith this piece is to say topeople, ‘Stop complainingand look at what we haveachieved in the past couple ofyears’,” he said.
Holohan said he choseNelson Mandela, FrancoisPienaar, Mark Shuttleworthand the four South Africanswimmers who won gold atthe Athens Olympics because“they represent the epitomeof success in South Africa”.
“In 1995 no one believed wecould host a successful RugbyWorld Cup let alone win. Butwe did with Nelson Mandelaon our side and we went on toachieve great things. Shuttle-worth became the first Africanin space,” Holohan said.
Holohan, now a BComstudent at the University ofCape Town, had this to say tohis peers: “Never stop believ-ing in yourself or let anythinghold you back. That is whatMandela, Shuttleworth andothers have taught us.
Durban Art Gallery’s Edu-cation Officer, Musa Mnc-wabe, said: “It’s meant to serveas an inspiration to emergingartists.”
The exhibition runs until 28June.
