James was born on Sept. 27, 1940, in Alton Mo., to James and Verna Nan- ney. Growing up, his fam- ily lived in various places before settling in Morton, where he graduated high school and met his wife of 39 years, Carole. In 1965, he obtained his pilot’s license and pur- chased his own plane. Fly- ing was a great passion of his. He worked in the saw industry for more than 30 years, which took him all over the world. In 1972, he married Car- ole Synder and in 1974 they had daughter, Christina. He retired from Stihl Northwest in 1995. During his retirement, golfing became his new passion. Jim and Carole enjoyed many days on the golf course together along with traveling. The other loves of his life were his grandchildren, Caleb and Kaitlyn. They brought him the most joy during the last few years. James was preceded in death by his parents James and Verna; a sister Ann; and his wife of 39 years, Carole. He is survived by his daughter, Christina; grand- children Caleb and Kaitlyn of Chehalis; stepdaughter Dori Mettler of Makoti N.D.; a brother, Robert Nanney of Cedar City, Utah; and a sister, Bernice Foote of Onalaska. A memorial service will be Friday, Dec. 7, 2012, at 11 a.m. at Sticklin Funeral Home, 1437 S. Gold St., in Centralia. A lifelong resident of East Lewis County, David Edward Randall began his life on Jan. 21, 1933, in McCallaster, Kansas. He went home to be with the Lord on Dec. 3, 2012, at the age of 79. After graduating from Morton High School, Dave enlisted in the Navy from 1952 to 1956, serving on the USS Frank Knox DDR- 742 in the Korean War. After leaving the Navy, Dave made his home in Packwood where he raised his family, coached Babe Ruth, Little League and was also a member of the White Pass Booster Club. In 1965, Dave began his career with the W.S.D.O.T as a winter temporary em- ployee at White Pass. In June of 1967, he became a permanent employee where he served until his promotion to supervisor of the Morton Shed in June of 1982. In November of 1987, Dave was honored as the District 4 outstanding Maintenance Employee of the Year. Dave was on the original equipment operator/train- ing when the W.S.D.O.T began its dump truck and front end loader training. His supervisors regarded him highly as “the man to get the job done.” Upon retiring from the D.O.T. in the spring of 1992, Dave became as we all knew him – a snowbird who went south in the win- ter. He loved his gatherings with his many friends, but the greatest joy was being called “Papa Donut” by his grandchildren. He leaves behind those who love him: daughter, Sheila Cook; son, Lynn (Donna) Peters; son, David Randall, Jr.; daughter, Le- nora (Alan) Redman; son Derald (Felicha) Randall; 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be at the Morton cemetery on Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012, at noon with Kevin Gil- lispie officiating. The family invites friends and family to join them at a potluck celebrat- ing Dave’s life at the Bob Lyle Community Center in Morton following the graveside service. Cattermole Funeral Home in Winlock is in charge of arrangements. Compiled from previous edi- tions of the Morton Journal. 50 Years ago Dec. 6, 1962 The first awarding of gift certificates for the 1962 holidays by the merchants of Morton will be Saturday at 2 p.m. on the corner of Second Avenue and Main Street. At the drawing, a total of $200 in certificates will be given away. All winners of gift certificates must be present to win. The certificates are good at any store in Morton and must be redeemed by Dec. 31. The event is being sponsored by the Morton Chamber of Commerce and the Morton Women’s Club. A lengthy town council meeting on Monday evening took place in the library at the town hall to discuss the wa- ter supply issue and several other issues. Morton Mayor Elmer Jastad presided over the meeting, which included a discussion on the loss of water system at Connely Creek. An investigation has shown the crib for the dam is still intact but the dam por- tion that holds the water back is gone. The bridge crossing the creek is also badly dam- aged and piled high with de- bris from the dam and other logs which are coming down the creek. City engineers from Gray and Osborne have been in contact with several agencies in hopes of finding someone who would be will- ing to assess he situation and make emergency repairs. The council will be going out as a body to assess the situation in person. 40 Years ago Dec. 7, 1972 A Lewis County PUD feeder line short created a power outage Monday after- noon in the Randle area. Ac- cording to PUD officials, the outage took place where the line goes south to Mt. Ad- ams Veneer. Power was out at the veneer plant from 1:05 p.m. until 2:30, according to Leonard Allen, manager of the Morton PUD office. Al- len said 250 students from Evergreen High School in Vancouver spent two hours in the cold at the Cispus En- vironmental Center due to the power outage and loss of heating. The Cispus facility was without power from1:05 until 3:15 p.m. Business owners and resi- dents in Morton are remind- ed to keep their sidewalks safe for foot traffic. City of- ficials said they do not have the equipment or the time to clean the sidewalks, which are the responsibility of the property owner. One dis- gruntled told the newspaper, “Let’s don’t let icy walks lose an area shopper.” Local firefighters re- sponded to a fire at the home of Mrs. Starr on Westlake Drive in Morton. Accord- ing to fire officials, the fire started in an overhead wood- stove. The fire was confined to the heater and wall. Six firefighters responded to the alarm and had to remove paneling to make sure the fire was out. The Morton City Council passed both the second and final reading of the 1973 city budget on Monday night. The $204,325 budget equals six mills – which is a drop of six mills –from the 1972 budget. The drop was due to an increase in property valu- ations in the coming year. Also during the meeting, Martha Fleming from the Lewis County Historical Society offered plans for establishing a museum at Backstrom Park in one of the buildings owned by the city. She said the area will used to house antiques and will be set up like a pioneer home. 30 Years ago Dec. 9, 1982 The countdown is under- way in Morton with a busy schedule planned for the second annual Yule Festival. Santa will rise early to be part of the Morton Orthope- dic Guild’s "breakfast with Santa" at 8:30 a.m. Santa will also be back for the community gathering of the town’s Christmas tree light- ing at 5 p.m. A raise in water and sew- er rates for Morton residents followed a five percent pay raise for city employees at Monday night’s Morton City Council meeting. The rate increase will mean an aver- age yearly utility bill will go up $18. The fee hike will add $26,000 to the city cof- fers. Monthly sewer charges will climb $1 with water rates up 50 cents. Council- man Charlie St. Clair was the lone councilmember vot- ing against the pay hike. “I am definitely against any in- crease in wages at this time,” said St. Clair. However, the four other councilmembers passed the pay increase, the third pay hike in three years for city workers. City em- ployees received a 10 per- cent increase in 1980 and 1981. Dave was on the original equipment operator/train-ing when the W.S.D.O.T began its dump truck and front end loader training. His supervisors regarded him highly as “the man to get the job done.”

Upon retiring from the D.O.T. in the spring of 1992, Dave became as we

all knew him – a snowbird who went south in the win-ter. He loved his gatherings with his many friends, but the greatest joy was being called “Papa Donut” by his grandchildren.

He leaves behind those who love him: daughter, Sheila Cook; son, Lynn (Donna) Peters; son, David Randall, Jr.; daughter, Le-nora (Alan) Redman; son Derald (Felicha) Randall; 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be at the Morton cemetery on Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012, at noon with Kevin Gil-lispie officiating.

The family invites friends and family to join them at a potluck celebrat-ing Dave’s life at the Bob Lyle Community Center in Morton following the graveside service.

Cattermole Funeral Home in Winlock is in charge of arrangements.

The first awarding of gift certificates for the 1962 holidays by the merchants of Morton will be Saturday at 2 p.m. on the corner of Second Avenue and Main Street. At the drawing, a total of $200 in certificates will be given away. All winners of gift certificates must be present to win. The certificates are good at any store in Morton and must be redeemed by Dec. 31. The event is being sponsored by the Morton Chamber of Commerce and the Morton Women’s Club.

A lengthy town council meeting on Monday evening took place in the library at the town hall to discuss the wa-ter supply issue and several other issues. Morton Mayor Elmer Jastad presided over the meeting, which included a discussion on the loss of water system at Connely Creek. An investigation has shown the crib for the dam is still intact but the dam por-tion that holds the water back is gone. The bridge crossing the creek is also badly dam-aged and piled high with de-bris from the dam and other logs which are coming down the creek. City engineers from Gray and Osborne have been in contact with several agencies in hopes of finding someone who would be will-ing to assess he situation and make emergency repairs. The council will be going out as a body to assess the situation in person.

A Lewis County PUD feeder line short created a power outage Monday after-noon in the Randle area. Ac-cording to PUD officials, the outage took place where the line goes south to Mt. Ad-ams Veneer. Power was out at the veneer plant from 1:05 p.m. until 2:30, according to Leonard Allen, manager of the Morton PUD office. Al-len said 250 students from Evergreen High School in Vancouver spent two hours in the cold at the Cispus En-vironmental Center due to the power outage and loss of heating. The Cispus facility was without power from1:05 until 3:15 p.m.

Business owners and resi-dents in Morton are remind-ed to keep their sidewalks safe for foot traffic. City of-ficials said they do not have

the equipment or the time to clean the sidewalks, which are the responsibility of the property owner. One dis-gruntled told the newspaper, “Let’s don’t let icy walks lose an area shopper.”

Local firefighters re-sponded to a fire at the home of Mrs. Starr on Westlake Drive in Morton. Accord-ing to fire officials, the fire started in an overhead wood-stove.

The drop was due to an increase in property valu-ations in the coming year. Also during the meeting, Martha Fleming from the Lewis County Historical Society offered plans for establishing a museum at Backstrom Park in one of the buildings owned by the city. She said the area will used to house antiques and will be set up like a pioneer home.

The countdown is under-way in Morton with a busy schedule planned for the second annual Yule Festival. Santa will rise early to be part of the Morton Orthope-dic Guild’s "breakfast with Santa" at 8:30 a.m. Santa will also be back for the community gathering of the town’s Christmas tree light-ing at 5 p.m.

A raise in water and sew-er rates for Morton residents followed a five percent pay raise for city employees at Monday night’s Morton City Council meeting. The rate increase will mean an aver-age yearly utility bill will go up $18. The fee hike will add $26,000 to the city cof-fers. Monthly sewer charges will climb $1 with water rates up 50 cents. Council-man Charlie St. Clair was the lone councilmember vot-ing against the pay hike. “I am definitely against any in-crease in wages at this time,” said St. Clair. However, the four other councilmembers passed the pay increase, the third pay hike in three years for city workers. City em-ployees received a 10 per-cent increase in 1980 and 1981.
