A few SPEcial Words from our President -SPE Colleagues,

I am proud to announce that our Coastal SPE Chapter has again attained SPE Gold Pinnacle Status from our National SPE Headquarters. The Pinnacle program was established in 2005 to recognize Sections and Divisions that successfully cre-ate and deliver member value during year. Sections and Divisions are reviewed in four categories of achievement: organization, technical programming, mem-bership and communication. Two levels of achievement are possible: Silver and Gold. Thanks to the hard work of our Board of Directors and Chapter members for helping us to obtain the status again. Only eleven of the sixty some Sections received Silver or Gold status in 2009.

We had a very informative tour and meeting last month at Static Controls in Sanford. Static Controls had blow molding and injection molding equipment run-ning during our visit. The company manufactures toner cartridges for the printer industry. Static Controls had a very impressive “lights out” molding facility. Our speaker gave a very informative discussion on NIMS certification (National Insti-tute for Metalworking Skills).

I would encourage you to attend our next meeting at the Becton Dickinson -Trey-burn facility in Durham, NC, March 9th. The plant tour will be of an impressive medical molding facility with a productive discussion on “Plastics in the Medical Industry” at the dinner meeting. Please be aware that you must pre-register for this tour due to security restrictions. If you do not pre-register, you will be unable to tour the plant. The plant tour will be at 4PM. Please see the meeting details in the newsletter - page 10.

We will be sending out a membership survey in the next month. We would like input from all our members on issues related to how the chapter is managed, monthly meetings, and all the ways the chapter can better serve you. Please re-view this survey and return your data. Your input is needed to make a stronger and informed chapter.

With the hard times the plastic industry is facing we need to be supportive of our chapter and each other. Support our local plastic industry from the resin representatives, toolmakers, machinery suppliers, manufacturers, molders, and OEM’s.

Thank you for being a part of this Chapter and for all the work you do on behalf of SPE Piedmont-Coastal. We look forward to seeing you at the March meeting.

Tim Earley, President Piedmont –Coastal S71 SPE

The February 2010 meeting at Chef Paul’s in Sanford marked the annual Education Night for the Piedmont-Coastal Sec-tion. This year the section donated more than $11,000 to various institutions for education.

Central Carolina Community College’s Tool and Die program received $2500 for the Dean Wakefield memorial scholar-ship and $2500 for general educational purposes. Last year, SPE funds were used to support tuition expenses for three students at CCCC: Jason Meads, Taylor Upchurch and Kelvin Puckett. The Department of Materials Science and Engineer-ing at N.C. State University received $3500 for the SPE Senior Scholarship, which was held by Justin Greene this past year. The Polymers Center of Excellence in Charlotte received $2500, which will be used to support student interns and complete an SPE awards disply in their conference center. Unable to attend this meeting was Salma Azam, the 2010 Essay Contest winner. She received an iPod Touch, and Panther Creek High School in Cary, NC received $250 from the Piedmont-Coastal Section. Salma’s essay is entitled “Plastic: The Unsung Hero of American Society”, and was printed in the February edition of the Perspective. Dr. Balik presented the Essay Contest awards at Panther Creek High School on February 15, 2010.

The Piedmont-Coastal Section congratulates the students who received these awards and wishes them well as they com-plete their education and pursue jobs in the plastics industry.

Sometimes a “jump start” can be a perfect way to begin a new year.

Let’s face it: 2009 was a tough year for those of us who experienced travel bans, budget cutbacks, and even layoffs. So to jump start 2010, we’re excited to announce that ANTEC® 2010 registration fees are the lowest they have been in over a decade!

SPE members will enjoy full-conference registration for $550. That’s access to more than 600 presentations, 95+ technical sessions, 3 plenary sessions, an exhibit hall dedicated to plastics, and unlimited networking opportunities — at registration fees that haven’t been so low since 1999.

Mark the dates on your calendar right now! ANTEC 2010 will take place at the Orlando World Center Marriott Resort and Convention Center, May 16-20. The conference, exhibition, and receptions will all be conveniently located under one roof, affording you even more direct access and face-to-face time with peers, exhibitors, and industry leaders.

Registration is now open. Visit the website www.antec.ws for regular updates. No other conference dedicated to plas-tics in the U.S. next year will equal ANTEC® 2010 in size or scope!

We look forward to welcoming you to Orlando.

MinutesPiedmont Coastal Section SPE, BOD Meeting

February 9, 2010The meeting was called to order by President Tim Earley. The following board members were present:

Tim Earley, President Don Aikin-Secretary Maury BalikPaul Sonkin Jim GriffithGlenn Shearin, President-Elect George MillingtonDan FuccellaAl BarbourJoe Henz-Carolinas SectionDavid Tiffany

Minutes from the January Meeting were accepted as submitted.

Treasurer’s Report: The treasurer’s report was approved as submitted. The board requested that David Tiffany prepare a year to year comparison of the section’s balance sheet in preparation for the planning session later in the Spring.

Newsletter Ad Report: Tim Earley reminded the board we will need to find a new ad chairman for next year to replace Walt Carey.

Golf Outing Update:-Walt Carey reported via email that the Bluegreen Corp still owes the section approx. $2100 from the Golf Outing, which Walt and Jackie are working to collect.

Tim Earley reported that Jackie Ryba has indicated she would be willing to continue working the golf outing provided enough other members stepped forward to help with details and specific assignments.

Membership Report: George Millington reported our “unofficial” membership as of Feb ’10 at 146 (one new member’s official status was temporarily delayed, but has now been resolved). This number is up from January’s membership of 139 and January 09 membership of 123. This represents a net increase of approx. 19% from January ’09 to February ’10.

George also suggested, and the board agreed, that a member survey covering items such as plant tour/program ideas and interests, best geographical spots for event based on members’ willingness to travel and best day of the week for our annual golf outing (weekday or weekend?). George will endeavor to get some feedback in time for the May planning session.

Education- Maury Balik informed the board that the essay contest winner would be unable to attend the evening’s award ceremony. He will set up a visit to Panther Creek HS to make the award to the winner along with the check to the HS. Maury hopes to have this event done in time to include information in the newsletter.

He also brought up the need to re-evaluate our educational expenditures to ensure they are properly aligned with our current financial status.

New Business: We need events for March and possibly, April, depending on the status of the Carolinas Section golf outing. Joe Henz will try to get us information as soon as possible regarding the status of the outing.

In the meantime, several board members will contact various companies for tour opportunities in March and April. Companies to be contacted include: John Deere/Fuquay, Pentair (Tim Earley), Elster (Jim Griffith) and Becton Dickinson (Dan Fuccella). Maury Balik reported that he had spoken with Tyco/Fuquay but they felt they didn’t have enough of interest to warrant a tour.

The meeting was adjourned by the President.
