The Readings and their Message

Isaiah 42:1–4, 6–7 The figure of the servant is introduced here. The servant is described as called by God and filled with the spirit, to carry out a mission. The servant has been chosen. He is the bearer of the spirit and will bring justice in a manner that is very different from that of the conqueror; he will do it without violence. He will heal the blind and free the captives. Acts 10:34–38 In the early days, if the Gentiles asked to be admitted in the church, they would first have to convert to Judaism. The story of Cornelius was very important, since he was not a Jew and converted to Christianity not to Judaism. The conversion of Cornelius opened the door for inclusion of Gentiles into the church. After many discussions and discernment, Peter came to the conviction that God does not make exceptions of people and does not exclude anyone. Luke 3:15–16, 21–22 Luke focuses more attention on the manifestation of God than in the fact of the baptism. It is worth noting that Jesus is in prayer. Luke always presents Jesus praying before making a decision. Luke sees in Jesus the fulfillment of the prophecy of Isaiah. He is careful to point out that it is the Holy Spirit, not John, who baptized Jesus. The real meaning of the event is the proclamation: You are my beloved Son. The beloved son received the voice of God and the Holy Spirit. By being baptized, he received the power to undertake his mission of salvation.

One of the most common responses to stories from abuse victims who suffered in silence for years is, “Why did you wait so long?” For many children, they wait because they have no one they trust to talk to about what’s happening to them. Many victims feel ashamed and guilty. Take steps to become a trusted adult to the children in your life. Tell them you will listen without judgment or punishment, even if they are scared to talk about something.
