Dear Friends: Many years ago, as a seminarian, I coordinated a group of seminarians who gave singing concerts. We trav-eled throughout the metropolitan area singing to raise funds for disabled children. We did all of this in mem-ory of our classmate Alexander Roberts. He had died in our junior year of college, and had been deeply de-voted to specially challenged children. Happily, we were able to accomplish great good in Al Roberts name and through the use of song. I mentioned that fundraising experience because I recall that there were times when we'd be booked into par-ishes that were known for having great wealth. And, surprisingly, on those nights we did ok but not as well as we did in the parishes with 'middle class' finances. The truth? Regular folks in regular parishes almost always gave more generously. This memory came to mind when we realized recently that our million dollar goal in the Our Lady of Lourdes Parish Growth and Development Campaign had been surpassed. And the relative quickness of attaining our goal seemed to surprise many. It really shouldn't be a surprise. Our Lady of Lourdes parishioners are not the richest people on Long Island, but the long-term evidence is that you are among the most generous, the most giving, the most faithful and the most loyal to our parish and to the work of the Church. Thank you so much for your generosity in this important Growth and Development campaign. If you have not already made your pledge, please don't think that reaching our pledged goal means we don't still need you. The truth is that finances are unpredictable. The good people who pledged that million dollars certainly hope to make good on their pledges. But life can throw anyone a surprise or two. And some pledges may not be realized. So your help, if you haven't yet pledged, remains important to the future well-being of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish. One final thought about lessons learned from this Campaign. It was my privilege, as Pastor, to read some of the many letters we received from great local folks who are struggling to make ends meet. Who, because of medical expenses and fixed income, are getting by, but just barely. Their letters would move you to tears. And in most cases, they were writing to apologize for not being able to give more to our Campaign efforts. I tell you this because it was a powerful reminder that even in a comfortable area like our own, hidden needs exist. Regular folks and neighbors are struggling, and we must remain mindful of the need to be sensitive to and supportive of our friends who don't have what we do. Again, thanks for your investment in the future of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish. Your goodness and generosity has been overwhelming. With gratitude and love,

Msgr. Jim Lisante Pastor

Our Parish depends solely on your generosity to meet each week’s expenses. Our regular Sunday collections account for more than 60% of our operating budget. Your continued support, especially during these difficult economic times, is both needed and appreciated. Last week you donated: $ 16,413.99

Our Lady of Lourdes

Words for Reflection from Pope Francis' encyclical, "Laudato SI",

(five of six to follow each week)

In his encyclical on creation care, Pope Francis high-lights “integral ecology” as basic to the conversion we are all called to in order to save our common home from destruction. “Integral ecology” is the pro-found, fundamental interconnection between God, human beings, and all the rest of creation. With Pope Francis we pray, “Triune Lord… Give us the grace to feel profoundly joined to everything that is.”

Parish Outreach

“Ministry of Consolation”

Our parish is richly blessed to have gathered a wonderful group of volunteers who make up Our Lady of Lourdes “Ministry of Consolation” team. The most valuable gifts we can give are the gifts that come from the heart. The pre-cious gifts of our time, love and compassion are especially needed during the time of the loss of a loved one.

Created to provide warmth, caring and personal attention to assist families in preparation for the funeral mass, this par-ticular ministry can never have too many helping hands. Whether your interest be that of a Greeter, Lector or EM, please give some thought as to sharing your time and tal-ents and being a part of this ministry’s call to love and care for one another.

Thank you so much to our coordinator, Deacon Frank Gari-boldi and all our volunteers for embracing this beautiful ministry. Please call Parish Outreach at 516-541-1260 if you would like to volunteer. Thank you for your considera-tion.

“We Care Blankets”

As our wonderful group of “Care Blanket” volunteers con-tinue to meet on Wednesday mornings from 10:00 - 11:30am at Parish Outreach, the gifts of their love, time and talent in crocheting and knitting beautiful blankets for seri-ously ill children is nothing less than a beautiful thing!

Since our group began in November 2009, the completed blanket count stands at 1,549 I’m sure in no time at all we will be adding to this amazing number. Thank you to our lovely group of ladies for all the good work you do to bring love and comfort to many children undergoing cancer care.

Outreach is happy to accept donations of yarns, crochet hooks or knitting needles in support of this effort. If you are interested in joining our group please contact Parish Outreach at 516-541-1260.

“Food Pantry”

Thank you to all the good people of our parish family for all you do to embrace those less fortunate. Especially dur-ing these Summer days when the children are home from school, your continued support and generosity are a wel-comed blessing. With many of us taking our well earned time off to enjoy the summer season, please continue to keep in mind our neighbors in need. We love to have plenty to share with all those who come to our door. Items most in need at this time are: Macaroni & Cheese, Pasta, Tomato Sauce, Peanut Butter and Jelly. Thank you for making our parish food pantry the wonderful suc-cess that it is! Canned Tuna Cereal s Coffee or Tea Canned Fruit Pancake Mix Powdered Milk Pasta Pancake Syrup Juices Tomato Sauce Can Vegetables Soup Peanut Butter Instant Potatoes Macaroni & Cheese Jelly Rice Cookies/Crackers Oatmeal Beans Jell-O/ Pudding

Parish Outreach hours are Mon.-Thurs. 9:00am-4:00pm.

… “BACK TO SCHOOL” … While our food pantry is always our first priority at Parish Outreach, we have been very successful the past years in helping families ease the burden of costly school supplies. It’s hard to believe that it’s that time of year when we begin to see the sale ads for “Back to School” necessities. If your means allow, kindly consider a donation of any of the following items to help children less fortunate prepare for the beginning of a bright, new school year. Parish Out-reach will be collecting school supplies throughout the month of August. Thank you for helping us to help others!
