Get your Group PaddlingScouting Ireland in conjunction with Canoeing Ireland (CI) and the Canoe Association of Northern Ireland (CANI) have agreed a directory of independent providers, to support canoeing activities and in particular the Paddling Adventure Skills programme, undertaken by Scout Groups nationwide. This initiative is suitable for all Scout age grades of Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Rovers and Ventures.

The initiative provides a structure whereby Scout Groups can readily identify the most convenient approved independent provider to them, with clear visibility of costs. It aims to be the most cost effective way for those Groups that do not have canoe equipment, or qualified canoe Instructors, to get their Scouts on the water.

Some Scout Groups will have availed of the excellent programme for Scouts, which CI provides at the Strawberry Beds Lucan. The independent provider initiative is in addition to the CI programme, but is of similar standard and will reach all counties in Ireland. Details of the CI programme can be viewed at canoe.ie/learn-to-canoe/scouting-ireland-stage-2-paddling-award/

How do you arrange a Paddling session with an Approved Provider• The Approved Provider’s register is on page 4 of this pdf.

• Simply phone the most convenient provider to your Group’s location and book a session.

• Sessions can be booked in multiples of twelve Scouts on the following basis:

• Please note group rates must be maintained at multiples of twelve. Therefore if you have a group of fourteen for example, you must either reduce the number to twelve, or pay for a group equating to twenty four participants.

• A typical four hour session running two groups , with each getting two hours on the water, would be as follows:

€180 for up to 12 scouts

€360 for up to 24 scouts

€540 for up to 36 scouts

€720 for up to 48 scouts

A group of 12 scouts will be broken up into two groups of 6 scouts, called Group A and Group B below.A group of 24 scouts will be broken up into two groups of 12 scouts, called Group A and Group B belowA group of 36 scouts will be broken up into two groups of 18 scouts, called Group A and Group B below

A group of 48 scouts will be broken up into two groups of 24 scouts, called Group A and Group B below.

Sessions will be delivered over a half day of activity, 4 hours. Groups will be split in two, with each getting a 2 hour session. Half of the group will be on the water or in the care of instructors the whole time, the other half of the group will be the responsibility of the scout leaders when they are not directly involved in a canoeing session. Leaders may choose to stagger the arrival and departure of the group or to do bank based activity with the half of the group who aren’t on the water.

Terms• A deposit, minimum €120, payable on booking may be required, at the discretion of the independent provider and

each session must be paid for in full before it commences. If the session is cancelled within 7 calendar days of the agreed date, then the deposit will be forfeited. If cancelled more than 7 days before the session date, any deposit paid will be refundable.

• The independent providers nationwide, are all registered with CI / CANI and jointly approved by CI / CANI and Scouting Ireland. The register will be updated annually and registrations checked to ensure it remains current.

What to bring on Canoeing Sessions• The outside provider will supply all the kayaking gear. What your Scouts need to bring is appropriate clothing for

under the wetsuit: shorts/swimming gear; warm fleece/hoodie or thermal that can get wet and a towel.

• Most importantly, they should bring old runners or booties that can get wet, as footwear is a must to avoid any cuts from sharp rocks and the like on the river bed.

• Scouts will burn up a lot of energy while on the water, so they should bring a packed lunch and snacks and plenty to drink to keep hydrated throughout.

• Don’t forget warm clothes for when they get off the water, particularly in the winter season.

Paddling Adventure Skills for ScoutsThe Paddling Adventure Skills are published in myScouts – One Programme – Adventure Skills https://my.scouts.ie/one_programme/about/adventure_skills/paddling_intro-261.html
