This Sunday, Jesus reminds us that "the harvest is abundant but the laborers are few." As Catholic disciples, we are the labor-ers that the Master is send-ing. All around us are op-portunities to share the love

and mercy of Jesus Christ - our homes, our workplaces, our neighborhoods, even our faith communities! Lest we feel unequipped for the task, Jesus gives us some advice. "Carry no money bag, no sack, no sandals." We might not have a theology degree or training in public speaking, but that doesn't mean we can't share the Gospel. The power of God is at work in simplicity. The disciples went forth with nothing as a reminder to trust in the Providence of God. Say a little prayer that God will speak through you and has a need for your gifts, just as you are. "Do not move about from one house to another." So much of the life of Jesus was about relationships. He modeled this attitude by journeying with his disciples. Here he makes the same recommendation to them, to remain with the same family for their entire stay in the town. Break bread with others. Invite them to coffee or a game night in your home. Sharing your faith isn't just about saying the right thing, but loving well over time. "The dust of your town that clings to our feet, even that we shake off." Sometimes we want to help someone, but for whatever reason, they don't receive it well. Sometimes people aren't interested in our efforts to invite them deeper into faith. When rejection happens, don't carry it with you. Don't let it over-burden your heart. Rejoice that you share in the mission of Christ, and keep on loving the next person he places in your path!

The St. Didacus Mental Health Ministry invites you to a

“Care—Prayer—Support” Gathering Sunday, July 7th 7:00pm—7:45pm

in the Parish Hall The gathering will include: Prayer and shar-ing. They will also have information on vari-

ous agencies that can help with whatever you or a loved one are encountering. All are welcome.

St. Benedict, Abbot

Feast Day Thursday, July 11th

Benedict’s name means “blessed.” His most famous mon-astery, Monte Cassino, has been destroyed and rebuilt three times. His monks follow the motto Ora et labora, which means “Pray and work.”

Benedict was born in Nursia, Italy, about 480. His parents were wealthy, so they sent him to Rome to be educated. When he was about 17, he decided to become a hermit. He was disgusted with the wild life of the students. With the help of an old monk, Benedict found a cave on Mount Subiaco about 50 miles south of Rome. He lived there for three years. Men recognized his holiness and joined him.

Sometime around 529, Benedict led a group of monks farther south, where they built Monte Cassino. He wrote his Rule based on Scripture. The monks’ first duty was liturgical prayer. The Benedictine monasteries that spread over Europe became centers of learning, agriculture, hospitality, and medicine. Benedict’s monks created illuminated manuscripts. They helped repair the damage caused by the barbarian in-vaders. Benedict probably died in 547. In art, he is usually shown with his Rule. In 1964, Pope Paul VI named him patron of Europe.

2019 National Collection for the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA

Next weekend, we will be taking up a special collection for the Archdiocese for the Military Services, which is responsible for providing a full range of pastoral ministries available in all US

dioceses to those serving in the US Armed Forces. The AMS receives no funding from the US Government or the US Military and must rely principally on private donations to fund an annual operating budget of over $8.2 million. There are special enve-lopes for this collection in the pews. Take one home today and return it next week. For more info visit, www.milarch.org.

Jesus tells his disciples, "I am sending you like lambs among wolves." Getting people to see the truth about who they are is not always easy or welcomed. Some people want to believe that they have life under control and they do not need any further advice, direction, or challenge from others. Being heralds of the Gospel means doing precisely that. We come with a message that is not always welcome or desired by our sis-ters and brothers. Yet, it is desperately needed. People need to be reminded of who they are, who God is, and the necessity of repentance for entering the Kingdom of God. It is not about what we want but what God wants. We are called to be peacemakers and laborers for justice and mer-cy. Are you willing to bring this challenging message to those who may be indifferent or even hostile to hearing it?

Don’t forget that the Altar Society is collecting gently worn and new shoes. Drop them off in the

shoe bin in the Parish Hall or at the school.

What is St. Benedict’s Rule? The Rule of St Benedict is a book of precepts written for monks living in community under the authority of an abbot. Since about the 7th century it has been adopted with equal success by communities of women. During the 1500 years of its existence, it has become the leading guide in Western Chris-tianity for monastic living in community, both in Catholicism and (since the time of the Reformation) in the Anglican and Protestant traditions. The spirit of St Benedict's Rule is summed up in the motto of the Benedictine Confedera-

tion: pax ("peace") and the traditional ora et labora ("pray and work").

Today we continue our armchair trip around the globe learning more about the Blessed Mother’s

appearances around the world and through the ages.

A Marian apparition is a reported supernatural appearance by the Blessed Virgin Mary. The figure is often named after the town where it is reported, or on the sobriquet given to Mary on

the occasion of the apparition.

Marian apparitions sometimes are reported to recur at the same site over an extended period of time. In the majority of Marian apparitions only one person or a few people report having witnessed the apparition. There are several well known appearances of our Blessed Mother, but there are many that are lesser known. There are many Marian apparitions have been thoroughly investigated and approved as valid by the Church. This is the story of one of those lesser-

known visits. This week’s stop: Leżajsk, Poland.

Our Lady of Leżajsk, Our Lady of Consolation

In 1578, a pious woodcutter, named Thomas Michalek, was startled by a bright light in the forest. Then a lady appeared to him and identified herself as the Blessed Virgin Mary. She asked him to build a church on that site. She said, “Thomas, I chose this place. Here my son will be loved and respected, and

whosoever shall call upon my intercession, will receive my blessing.”

Thomas was afraid, and he did nothing in response to this message and did not tell anyone. Our Lady appeared to him again and scolded him for not fol-lowing her instructions. After this, he did relate his story to his fellow villagers, but was afraid to approach the Bishop. He informed the authorities, who did not believe him. He was actually thrown into prison. He was subsequently released, and after the death of the curate who was against the vision, a

chapel was finally built by the parish priest.

In 1606, a larger shrine was built there thanks to the efforts of the local Bishop (Msgr. Potrokonski) and the support of the Polish King, Sigismund III. Later, the Bishop’s successor confirmed the authenticity of the apparitions. Pope Benedict XIV ordered that the image be crowned on

September 8, 1752.

About the Basilica of Our Lady of Leżajsk:

The Basilica is beautiful with many paintings and baroque architecture. The highlight, of course, is the image of Our Lady of Leżajsk (Our Lady of Consolation). It is the work of Fr. Erasmus in the late 16th Century. He had been the mayor there, but later, he joined the Order of Canons Regular, where

he became a priest.

O Mother of Consolation, help us to defend the dignity of every human person, their life and love, within ourselves and within our families.

O Gracious Mother, support us in fulfilling our mission in this modern world, be for us The Star of Consolation, The Smile of Forgiveness, and the Sun of Hope that leads us to everlasting Joy. O Mother we implore

You to intercede for us with Your Son. Amen.

“Let all the earth cry out to God with joy!”

Glorious God, your mercy extends through all crea-tion. Make us good and

generous stewards of the earth’s resources.

In the Gospel of St. Luke, the ancient practice of

hospitality—the custom of welcoming travelers or strangers into one’s home and estab-lishing relationships with them—becomes the prism through which Jesus’ disciples can view one another and others as valuable children of God. Luke repeat-edly focuses on the

ancient practice of hospitality, the custom of wel-coming travelers or strangers into one’s home while committing to provide them with protection and pro-visions. This custom functions as an effective bridge for evangelization and the unification of the early Church. Yet this custom is not a one-sided ministry for Jesus’ disciples: they are called to be both exem-plary hosts and exemplary guests as they carry out the ministry of Jesus in word and deed. Hospitality establishes a truly interdependent and reciprocal relationship that requires disciples, whether they are hosts or guests, to view the stranger as a valuable child of God. These Lukan hospitality texts remain relevant for Christians today. Even more than in the ancient world, we encounter travelers and strangers from vastly different regions and cultures. Some are traveling by choice (e.g., students and immigrants), while others travel by necessity (e.g., evacuees from natural disasters and refugees from war-torn re-gions). In Luke’s writings, we hear a call to extend hospitality to these strangers in creative ways. With the early Christians we should take wise steps to guard against those who might abuse generous hosts, but we may not neglect the Christian ministry of hospitality. As Jesus’ disciples, we should proac-tively seek to extend protection and provisions to strangers. As we do this, we may encounter God’s presence in the midst of our hospitality. We may well “entertain angels without knowing it.” Excerpt from Entertaining Angels: Hospitality in Luke and Acts by Andrew Arterbury, Assistant Professor of Christian Scriptures at George W. Truett Theological Seminary at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. To read the whole article, visit our website and look for the link.

CONVIVENCIA Y CONVIVIO
