WANGARATTA City’s over 35 men got revenge for last week’s loss to Albury City White on Sunday, win-ning a thrilling match 1-0 to maintain top spot on the Albury Wodonga Football Association table.

The Red Devils had an early goal disallowed due to a contentious off-side call, leaving the score deadlocked at 0-0 for the majority of the match.

A number of attempts on goal throughout the second half went close, but it wasn’t until late in the game when a corner kick from Marc Bongers set up a header for Lyndon Dodd that the Red Devils finally had the chance to celebrate.

The win was all the more satisfy-ing given Wangaratta City had suf-fered its first loss of the season when it went down to the same opponent 4-3 last week.

The two sides meet again in a cou-ple of weeks, in what will be an entic-ing rubber match.

Wangaratta’s reserves men also played out a thriller, up against Boomers FC, with both sides chasing their fifth win of the year.

In a back and forth clash, neither side was able to land the decisive blow, with the score line finishing up locked at 3-3.

Meanwhile, the division three men had a comfortable win over Boomers, dominating proceedings to triumph

3-0 and climb up to seventh place on the ladder.

In junior soccer, Wangaratta’s un-der 12s kept up their perfect start to the AWFA season, taking their record to nine wins from as many matches with a 10-0 rout of Boomers FC.

The young Red Devils were on the ball from the opening whistle, domi-nating play all over the ground and keeping the ball in their forward half almost exclusively.

The goals came thick and fast, with Boomers players unable to mount any resistance to the onslaught.

The Wangaratta side boasts the most potent attack in the competition, aver-aging nine goals per match, while they have conceded just seven goals in total.

The club’s under 13 side chalked up its sixth win of the season, cruis-ing past Boomers for a 6-2 win.

In under 14 soccer, Wangaratta continued to stumble, suffering its second straight loss after opening the season with nine consecutive wins.

The Red Devils were beaten 4-0 by new ladder leader Boomers FC, slip-ping to third place in the process.

But it was good news for the under 14 girls, who thrashed Albury City 12-0 in what was a completely unex-pected result.

Meanwhile Wangaratta’s under 16 side maintained its unblemished re-cord, registering its 11th straight win with a 4-0 defeat of Boomers FC.

WANGARATTA City returned to the winner’s list on Sunday, eclipsing fellow finals aspirant Boomers FC 5-1 at South Wanga-ratta and moving into the top four for the first time in a number of years.

In the final round of action be-fore the Albury/Wodonga Football Association breaks for the Queen’s Birthday, the Red Devils were de-termined to get three points.

And with Stefan Joseph scoring a double in the second half, Wan-garatta City was able to see off every Boomers’ challenge.

Wangaratta co-coach Mario An-tonello said the win was crucial for his side and added they could move higher after the break.

“Definitely very happy to get the win we were,” he said.

“Both us and Boomers were on

the same points heading into the game so to get the win was prob-ably worth two.

“We skip clear of them now and we’re in equal fourth.

“If results go our way after the bye we could slot into third.”

Nick Frawley opened the scor-ing in the first half after a goal line scramble but that would be the only goal for the first 45 minutes and the Red Devils had to fight hard to prevent Boomers from equalising.

But in the second half Joseph made it hard for Boomers to get into the match by doubling the lead early.

Boomers had the chance to peg one back, however, Jon Shaw saved a penalty before Harry Hill made it three goals with an easy tap in.

The visitors finally hit back with a goal but the game was as good as over with Richard Hodgeman

and Joseph adding the finishing touches.

Antonello said the Red Dev-ils’ defensive quartet of Hill, Tom Frawley, Aaron Taylor and Ahmet Ay were outstanding.

“Tom played left back and he was best on ground for us,” he said.

“Young Aaron Taylor was a close second in the best on ground voting as well at right back.

“Those two together with Harry Hill and Ahmet, they set up a lot of our attacks.

“Probably 70 per cent of our at-tacking moves came from those boys.”

Antonello was also impressed with his side’s ability to finish off on Sunday, as it has been an area of the game that the Red Devils have struggled in at times this season.

The Red Devils will enjoy a week’s break before taking on Wo-donga Heart at home on June 16.
