Nor th Bend Schoo l The first classes held in North Bend were located in a building behind the post office. This was called an assisted school, where by the Provincial treasury pays the salary for the teacher or monitor plus incidental expenses. Parents or others interested supplied a suitable school room, fur-nishings and all other expenses. Miss J.B. Mc Millan was the monitor, with 3 trustees: W.M. Arnott, E Choate and James Hallisy.

By 1906, with increased enrolment, a new school house was provided beside the post office. Mr. Samuel Sharpe was the school custodian. The teacher was Miss Alice John, and trustees were: John Copeland, L. Turner and W.R. Hunt. In the 1911 photo of the school building and class it lists the principal as Mr. Corry. By 1915 a larger school was required and the site chosen was the corner of Chamoux and Station road. The previous school building was turned over to the Anglican Church.

This was St. Michaels and All Angles church in North Bend.

The new school was an elementary school only, high school students had to go to Agassiz. In about 1933 more rooms were added making it a two story building.

A lower room became the gymnasium and high school classes were then taught in North Bend. In 1948 more modifications were made and the school looks as it is today.

With changes in enrolment in 1959 North Bend once again became an elementary school. In the late 1960’s early 1970’s the kiosk hut was added giving a covered area for play. In 2003 the school was officially closed.

In 2008 with a New Horizons for seniors grant the school was transformed into a Thrift Shop, seniors drop in room, family wellness center and History/museum.

Roses or Thorns

Roses to the RCMP and COP for braving the cold to gather donations for the Food Bank and roses to the community members that supported this event. A dozen thorns to whoever destroyed the cell towers. Roses to Mike for helping my son when he fell off his bike. I will never forget. Thorns to the people who burn garbage in their fireplace, which stinks up the neighbourhood. A bundle of roses to Mr. & Mrs. Claus for the great job they did at the Children’s Party. A rose to each newsletter contributors for getting the articles in early so that the Editor didn’t have to stress over the holidays!

To all the helpers for the Cops for Cancer Boston Bar lunch. On behalf of the Canadian Cancer Society, I would like to offer our thanks for all of your support of this year’s Cops for Cancer Tour de Valley. In September of 2011, our team of law enforcement personnel rode over 750 km through the Fraser Valley to raise funds and awareness for pediatric cancer and our support programs like Camp Goodtimes….. Overall, we visited over 80 schools and businesses, and are on track to raise over $400,000. Thank you for providing a meal for our Team and crew. We always enjoy the meal at Boston Bar. We love that the community comes out to support us and everyone bring a little something. It truly captures the spirit of every-thing that we promote with our cause— communities coming together to help us in our fight. Cops for Cancer is more than just raising money and awareness. It is about showing children and their fami-lies that the community is there to support them through their journey. In the words of one mother whose seven year old daughter is now several months cancer free—”What we get from the Cops for Cancer is something that you just can’t buy. It is a feeling. It’s a recharging of the batteries. Through the dedication of the riders and the support of all the community it recharged me. It helped rebuild that unwavering belief that my daughter will go on because there are people out there who believe, who fight, who push themselves to go on and give wholeheartedly to a cause, a belief, to a cure”. Thank you again for your support and we hope that you will continue to support us in the years to come. It takes a com-munity to make a difference and your involvement is making a difference in the lives of children living with cancer. Wishing you the best for the…. holiday season. Sincerely, Nicola Harper, Tour de Valley Coordinator

PLEASE NOTE THE LANDFILL WILL CLOSE AT 4:30 pm DURING WINTER

MONTHS.

The following volunteers went all out to provide a wonderful dinner for our seniors. Cooks: Nancy Carmichael, Nora Roberts and Donna Kneller helped with the prep and cooking of food. Decoration Crew: Lori & Kathy Walters, Barb Helm, and Shirley Crow decked the hall. Counter Attack Crew: Betty & Arthur Davidson, Spencer White, Austin & Jaybel For-man, and Nick Clelland served the meal. Thank you all for making the Senior’s Christmas so special!

We had a wonderful time at the Family Place Christ-mas Party. Of the 46 children that we purchased gifts for this year—38 attended the party and over 25 par-ents. It was the best year for attendance in over three years time. Helping to contribute to our success was Morris and Karen Tillotson—who made a wonderful Santa and Mrs. Claus team! Thank you so much! Thanks to Marg Hendrickson for the best elf ever and wrapping all of those gifts, providing crafts, and for helping me with the shopping; big time! Thanks to “Success by Six” and Ministry of Children & Family De-velopment for providing the funding. Thanks to Amanda Westerlund and Glennis Fraser for their sup-port and bringing Strong Start and Kindergarten to our party. Nancy Carmichael
