Pastor’s Desk My Dear Parishioners,

I once again wish to THANK EVERYONE who contributed to our ALL FOR ST. JOHN’S project during the month of August. As of August 31st, you raised for our parish $11,076.00, over and above our $10,000.00 goal! We are s ll receiving some late contribu ons at the rectory, and they will be included in our overall total, which we will report next weekend.

I also wish to extend my gra tude to all who have been carefully observing the Covid-19 protocols of using the hand sani zer when entering the church, wearing a mask, and keeping the social distancing. You have helped to contribute to the health and safety of all who come to worship here. Just a few reminders: the mask should cover both nose and mouth; at communion me, do not lower the mask un l a er you have received the host in your hand and have taken at least four steps to the side to consume it. For now, no one should request receiving communion on the tongue. It puts the priest and other churchgoers at risk.

Monday is Labor Day, the informal end of summer. We will only have Mass at 9am on Monday, and the church will otherwise be closed a er Mass is over.

I am pleased to say that we have signed up enough adorers to expand Eucharis c Adora on from 12 noon to 6:30pm to Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, star ng this week. We invite you to come and spend some me in prayer in

the privileged presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.

Reflection on Today’s Scripture Readings

During the first few months of marriage, the honeymoon period, the one we love may seem perfect to us. He or she can do nothing wrong. Soon, though, reality sets in and we start accumulating hurts. We may hurt one another knowingly or unknowingly. It’s much the same in a family or a community. Sooner or later our love for one another is tested by sin and human weakness. Will we put up with the other’s behavior or confront it? Which choice reflects true love? Today Paul recalls some signs of true love; he reminds us what those who love will not do. The other Scriptures bring out some of the surprising signs of true love. Loving one another just might involve nagging, confronting, fighting, or telling family secrets. It will certainly involve mutual respect and acceptance, along with a healthy dose of prayer for each other. And true love will seek constantly to call forth the best in the ones we love. —Virginia Stillwell

Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure!

“You, son of man, I have appointed watchman for the house of Israel…” - E 33:7

Many of us are generous with our gifts. However, many of us are not generous in proportion to the gifts we have been given. How often do we give at the minimum level required? Remember, the Lord calls us to nurture and develop our

gifts. He calls us to be generous with all the gifts He has given us, especially the one that means the most to us.

Our Sunday Offering: July 26, 2020 - $11,118.20 July 28, 2019 - $15,119.08

—Virginia Stillwell

Saint Teresa of Kolkata Feast Day – September 5

Raised in a deeply Catholic family in Albania, Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu joined the Sisters of Loreto in 1928 and took the name Teresa. The community sent her to Kolkata, India, where she taught children

for two decades. In 1946 Teresa heard God’s call to quench the thirst of Jesus by caring for the poorest of the poor. She left the Sisters of Loreto to rescue the sick and destitute in the slums of Kolkata — one at a time. Many volunteers soon joined her and she formed them into her religious order, the Missionaries of Charity. Teresa’s manifest goodness and her unique media savvy attracted global attention, drawing many people to God. Many regard her as the greatest Catholic evangelist of the 20th century. She was beatified in 2003 and canonized in 2016.

NEIGHBORLY LOVE

RCIA

While we await direction on the format for this year’s Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults process (RCIA), now is the time for interested people 18 years of age and older to begin the process of inquiry. If you have mentioned your desire already to a priest or deacon, or have thought about completing your sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, Communion), or know of someone considering entering the Catholic Church from another religion or no religion, now is the time to contact Deacon Jim (English) or Deacon Lynx (Spanish). Please leave your name and phone number at the rectory.

St. John’s Rosary Society

Thank you to all for making a donation towards Feeding the Homeless on September 15th. Because of your generosity, our organization was able to send Family Promise a check for $785.00!

Again, thank you for your continued support, especially during these trying times. Stay safe & be well.

PRAYER OF THE HOLY FATHER JOHN PAUL II

THE NATIVITY OF THE VIRGIN MARY

Oh Virgin rising, hope and dawn of salvation for the whole world,

make your maternal gaze benign towards all of us, gathered here to celebrate and proclaim your glories!

O faithful Virgin,

that you were always ready and solicitous to welcome, preserve and meditate on the Word of God, make sure that we too, in the midst of the dramatic vicissitudes of history, know how to always keep our Christian faith intact, a precious treasure that our parents have transmitted to us!

Oh mighty Virgin, that with your foot you crushed the head of the tempting serpent, make us fulfill, day after day, our baptismal promises, with which we have renounced Satan, his works and his seductions, and that we know how to give in the world a joyful witness of Christian hope!

O gracious Virgin, that you always opened your maternal heart to the invocations of humanity, sometimes divided by lack of love and also, unfortunately, by hatred and war, make us always know how to grow, according to the teaching of your Son, in unity and in peace, to be worthy children of the only heavenly Father! Amen
