CONGRATULATIONS Last Sunday, I attended the Vicariate II Youth Leadership Awards Banquet at the White Eagle in Niles. This gathering takes place every year to honor young men and women in our Vicariate for their work and ministry in the areas of Catechesis and Evangelization, Community Service and Social Jus-tice, Prayer and Worship and Peer Ministry. At the event 379 teens were recognized for their involve-ment in the life of the church through their parishes and high schools. In this photo, Bishop Frank Kane is with two teens from St. Mary of the Woods, Margaret “Meggie” Melaniphy and James Ryan. Margaret works at the rectory and has served as an usher (along side her dad, John) at the 12:00 noon mass for many years. She is a student at Regina Dominican. James, a stu-dent at St. Patrick High School, has readily made himself available for service to our parish, especially in regard to Altar and Rosary activities. Also, in the photo is Amanda Thompson, the Vicariate II Catechetical Coordinator. She is also one of our parishioners and is the wife of Deacon Chuck Thomp-son. In addition, three teens form St. Mary of the Woods were recognized for their involvement at their re-spective high schools. Elizabeth Wuertz ministers in Prayer and Worship at Loyola Academy, Nolan Garrity is a Peer minister at Notre Dame and Hailey Frederick has been involved in Community Ser-vices and Social Justice at Regina. On behalf of all of us at St. Mary of the Woods, I thank these young men and women for their excep-tional service in our community. They are not just the future of the Church, they are the Church, here and now! Peace, Father Pat

OPERATION RICE BOWL In the Scriptures for today, we hear the commandments given to Moses after God brings the Israelites out of slavery. These commandments rep-resent fundamental rights and responsibilities for all of God’s people. This week through Operation Rice Bowl, we learn about communities in El Salvador that lack clean and safe water, which is a basic human right. We pray for those whose health is compromised by contaminated water, and we fast from wasting and polluting this precious resource. We give so that CRS can improve access to clean water in communities through-out the world.

Dear Friends, We have all learned that Carol Stucko has retired. We heave a sigh, recognizing our loss. For 40 years Carol has been a grace and blessing to the Faith Community of St. Mary of the Woods. She has served under all five Pastors here and always with a smile and words of comfort and encouragement to everyone. Personally, I am grateful for her friendship, cheer-ful manner and her wealth of knowledge which she so willing shared. You will be missed, Carol. As Carol has blessed us, so I invite you to bless her. Please come to the 12:00 mass on March 18th, extend your hand over her and ask God to bring her every good thing as she embarks upon her new journey. It is said that there are people in this life who leave their footprints on our hearts. Surely Carol is one of them. God’s blessings always, Marcy

—Carol Stucko— Patti and I met Carol for the first time in the late Summer of 1979 when we moved to St. Mary of the Woods from St. Hilary parish. I was a newly ordained Deacon and if we needed to know anything about the work-ings of SMOW, all we had to do was ask Carol. Carol was always ready with a smile in her voice and on her face to do whatever she could to help everyone. It has been a true pleasure to have worked with you for the past 32+ years, Carol. God bless you! Bill & Patti

McLAUGHLIN SERIES Facing Life with Faith

    Established 2004

Jail Ministry: Our Gospel Mandate Rev. Arturo Perez Roderiguez

Director of Kolbe House, Archdiocese’s Jail Ministry & Pastor of Assumption BVM Parish

    Wednesday, March 14, 2012 7:30-9:00 pm

Mary, Seat of Wisdom Clark Ministry Center

    1335 S. Clifton, Park Ridge

“I was in prison and you visited me…” is the Gospel mandate for the entire Church. How we respond is the challenge we face. On any given day an estimated 9,000 adults are locked up in Cook County Jail, another 750 adults in Lake County Jail, and approximately 700 juveniles at the Cook County Juvenile Detention Cen-ter. Kolbe House deals directly with those involved in the criminal justice system and works to educate the public about the realities of that system and the nature of those who are caught up in it. Our direct service in-cludes one-to-one visits, pastoral counseling, and celebration of the Mass and other liturgies. We listen to and stand with family members, and provide emergency services to the incarcerated, their families and other fami-lies in similar situations. The McLaughlin Series is open to the public and is free of charge. Questions? Con-tact Susan Schaefer (847-384-9338) or [email protected]. To find out more about Kolbe House go to www.kolbehouseministry.org.

ALMS COLLECTION NEXT WEEK FOR CHILDREN’S PLACE ASSOCIATION When founded in 1991, Children’s Place Association was the first residential facility in the Midwest dedicated to the care of HIV/AIDS-affected children. Now, over 17 years later, the greystone home on Chicago’s west side, along with other facilities in the city, continue to offer around-the-clock nursing care and other specialized treatment for children who have been separated from their families. They include children who are themselves HIV-infected or AIDS-diagnosed, those whose parents are ill from HIV/AIDS-related conditions, as well as children with other life-threatening or serious illnesses, such as cancer. Since 1991, hundreds of children have made Children’s Place their home. Most of the children staying in the group home have been wards of the state - separated from their families due to neglect, abuse, parental substance use or other fac-tors. Over the years, Children’s Place Association has responded with new programs and services to answer the changing and emerging needs of HIV/AIDS-affected families. These include in-home child care to help parents struggling with HIV/AIDS-related illness, case management, mental health counseling, a summer camp, and respite care. Please be generous. Thank you!

    DOMESTIC VIOLENCE MINISTRY

Domestic violence occurs when one person attempts to maintain power and control over the other through physical, emotional, sexual, psychological and economic abuse. Many people in our society have experienced and continue to experience the terror of living in danger of being attacked by another family member. For generations, violence in the home was common and went virtually un-challenged.

Domestic violence is often shrouded in si-lence. People outside the family hesitate to interfere, even when they suspect abuse is oc-curring. Some people argue – mistakenly – that intervention by outside sources endan-gers the sanctity of the home.

Physical abuse includes being hit, slapped, pushed, kicked or beaten. Emotional abuse is often harder to identify but may include, be-ing threatened, harassed, stalked, called names, humiliated and intimidated by your partner.

An abusive relationship does not have to be condoned or tolerated.

How do we understand these changes? How do we deal with all the feelings that are involved in these changes?

How do we find meaning in our lives?

Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. Those who are bound by this may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if neces-sary to maintain strength according to one’s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. The special Paschal fast and abstinence are prescribed for Good Friday and encouraged for Holy Saturday.

BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT Grief is the deepest wound you will ever experience. Tears, sadness, difficulty concentrating, anger: these are just a few of the manifestations of grief. Join us on Saturday, March 17th, at 8:30 A.M. in Jubilee House, located at 7045 N. Moselle Ave. (two houses north of the Rectory). You will have the opportunity to be with others who are also facing these difficult moments in their lives. For more information, please contact Tom Reagan at (847)824-9926.
