A word from the Administrator…
This seems to have been an exceedingly long,
bleak, cold and snowy winter. I know most of
us will be thrilled when the first bright sunny
warm days arrive. With the advent of spring
and these long awaited sunny days comes re-
newal. This year we will all have to collec-
tively use this spirit of rebirth to look at the
ways we provide care to our residents at Fair-
view and become better at what we do in an
extremely challenging environment that has
been riddled with cuts in our reimbursement.
Medicare is cutting back and covering fewer
services, Medicaid has only increased our
rates by one percent in five years, our hard
working and dedicated employees have had
their wages frozen and we continually ask the
question of how can we do a better job with
fewer resources and when will this end??
Along with our dedicated staff, Fairview has
been blessed with many individuals who have
generously donated time and money to insure
that these severe budget cuts do not negatively
affect our mission. These individuals and cor-
porations are vital to insure our reputation, the
quality of our care and our five- star rating re-
mains intact during these challenging eco-
nomic times.
Please continue to remember us in your
prayers, in your generosity and your kind
words as we struggle forward.
James K. Malloy, Administrator

RESIDENT
FAMILY
MEMBER
MAKES
DONATION
Ellen Phibbs Rosenfeldt has made many donations
to Fairview since her Dad became a resident a few
months ago. She was instrumental in having co-
workers in her office donate several gifts at Christ-
mas time for residents. She has donated gardening
tools to the recreation department for the residents to
use in the newly refurbished greenhouse and in the
new outdoor flower boxes outside the recreation de-
partment. Ellen recently surprised Fairview resi-
dents with a huge box of individual chocolates for
Valentines Day. Ellen is pictured with her dad, Matt
Phibbs.
GRAND LODGE OF CONNECTICUT
COMES THROUGH AGAIN
The Grand Lodge of CT I.O.O.F. made a $3,000.00 do-
nation to the 2009 Fairview annual fund. This was a
matching gift for the first $3,000.00 in annual fund dona-
tions. This is the fourth year the Grand Lodge has made
this commitment to Fairview. The 2009 annual fund
which closed on December 31 raised $18,070.00 thanks
in great measure
to this donation.
All funds were
used to help pay
for the continu-
ing implementa-
tion and upgrade
of the electronic
medical records
system (EMR). Pictured, accepting the check from 2009
Connecticut I.O.O.F. Grand Master Dan Robichaud, is
Fairview Administrator, James Malloy (L). Connecticut
I.O.O.F. Grand Lodge Secretary Warren Smith rounds
out the photo.
FAIRVIEW RESIDENT COUNCIL
HOLDS FUNDRAISER FOR HAITI
Two-hundred dollars was raised by the Fairview
Resident Council in conjunction with the recreation
department to aid victims of the Haiti earthquake.
The council held a raffle for a beautiful gift basket.
The proceeds were donated to the Diocese of Nor-
wich Haitian Ministries. The drawing was February
5 and the winner was Billy Joe Foreman, a resident
of Fellowship Manor. Pictured at the drawing are (L
-R): Fairview residents Alice Martin, Tomi Stanley,
director of recreation, and Frances Vera, Fairview
resident and president of the resident council.

NewportFed MAKES DONATION
The NewportFed Charita-
ble Foundation recently
donated $4,000.00 to help
pay for the installation of
an automatic door
opener. Fairview also
received a $2,000.00
grant from the Chelsea
Groton Bank Foundation
to help with this expense. Thanks to the generosity of
these community minded
businesses Fairview had
enough funds to complete
not only the automatic door
opener, but to also install
another new door leading
into our greenhouse (see
photos). Pictured from
NewportFed are Mary Lou
Lamontagne, Business De-
velopment Officer, and Mil-
dred Dion, VP & Branch
Manager along with Fair-
view director of develop-
ment, David Brown.

FAIRVIEW RESIDENTS ENJOY
NEW YEAR’S EVE PARTY
A good time was had by all residents at the recrea-
tion department’s New Year’s Eve party held in the
first floor dining room. Entertainment was provided
by frequent guest guitar player and singer Eva De-
vine. Several family members also attended includ-
ing Skip O’Rourke pictured with his mom, Phyllis.
INTERGENERATIONAL PROGRAMS
IN FULL SWING
Residents and children from the child development
center were entertained by staff members from two
well-known local tourist attractions in January and
February. First, on January 12, a sea-shanty from
the Mystic Seaport played songs and gave the his-
tory of the Sea Shanty - songs sung by sailors in
rhythm with their
work. On Febru-
ary 2, members
of the Mystic
Aquarium were
on hand with dif-
ferent species of
fish and other sea
creatures. Resi-
dents and chil-
dren even got to touch some of the animals. Both of
these programs were made possible by a grant pro-
vided by the Dime Bank. Pictured is Sea Shanty
Brian Keenan. VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
Veronica Bacong has been a volunteer at Fair-view for almost 3 years. Besides playing classi-cal music for the residents with her great piano skills, she also helps at part ies, h e l p s run pro-grams in rec rea -tion, and helps on out-trips. V e r o n -ica is a senior at F i t c h H i g h S c h o o l in Groton and is preparing to go to college in the fall. She has received a four-year scholar-ship to the University of Connecticut with aspi-rations of becoming a medical doctor.

INTERGENERATIONAL
READING PROGRAM
Every Tuesday morning children from the child de-
velopment center visit Fairview. They come to lis-
ten to stories read to them by Fairview residents.
This is a great example of how our intergenerational
programs benefit both our older and younger genera-
tions. Pictured is Fairview resident Katherine Mul-
ler reading to some of the children. One of the chil-
dren sitting listening intently is Nathan Mahoney,
son of first shift LPN Karen Mahoney.

Protect Your Loved Ones: Tips for Family Members in Infection
Prevention
Do not visit when you are ill Our residents often have weaker immune systems so are more likely
to catch infections from others.
Do not demand antibiotics for your loved one
Let the healthcare provider decide if antibiotics are needed. Remem-
ber, antibiotics are not always needed. Antibiotic resistance is a grow-
ing problem. Infections can be caused by viruses or bacteria. Antibiot-
ics only work against bacterial infections. Antibiotics cannot cure viral
infections like the common cold, flu and most sore throats. Misusing
antibiotics helps create antibiotic resistant bacteria.
Cover your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing
Get vaccinated Annual flu shots and pneumonia shots are especially important for
people who spend time with the elderly.
Clean your hands
Use soap and water or alcohol based hand rub when you arrive at
Fairview and when you leave. Wash after coughing, sneezing, blow-
ing your nose or helping your family member. Wash before eating or
helping someone to eat, after using the bathroom or assisting your
loved one after toileting. Frequent and careful hand washing is one of
the best preventative measures that we have against the spread of
germs in our facility. There are alcohol wash dispensers throughout
Fairview and at the main entrance. There are sinks for hand washing
located throughout as well.
VOLUNTEERS ORGANIZE LIBRARY
The Fairview library is a wonderful place to sit and
read. It is also used frequently by residents who take
books back to their rooms. This process has been
made much easier through the help of two volun-
teers, Nancy Jankovich and Dianne O’Connell.
T h r o u g h
their ef-
forts the
books have
been rear-
ranged by
c a t e g o r y
and in al-
phabetical

Nancy also
plans on periodically taking books to residents who
are unable to leave their room. Pictured in the li-
brary organizing the books are (L-R) Dianne and
Nancy.

BENEFIT FROM
STONINGTON
LODGE
DONATION
Citizens in two Connecticut towns once again bene-
fited from the generosity of the Stonington Lodge
#26 I.O.O.F. The Groton Social Services agency
along with the Pawcatuck Neighborhood Center
both received two complete Christmas dinners for
two needy fami-
lies. The lodge
has been provid-
ing this donation
for the past sev-
eral years. They
also provide two
complete dinners
to both charities
for the Thanksgiv-
ing Holiday. This is one of the many ways in which
the Stonington Lodge gives back to their local com-
munity.

MARDI
GRAS
PARTY
A BIG
HIT
Fairview
residents
w e r e
treated to
a lively Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday, party on Febru-
ary 16. The atmosphere was festive and included
costumes, masks, and beaded necklaces. The resi-
dents even had a hand in making some of the crea-
tive regalia. After a delicious cake was served, the
king and queen were randomly selected. Pictured
with Fellowship Manor resident Bob Rubega who
serenaded the throng is (L-R): Queen Alice Martin,
volunteer coordinator Sarah Stanley, and King Matt
Phipps. Mr. Rubega has also donated his time vol-
unteering to help restore the greenhouse.
CHILDREN’S CHRISTMAS PARTY
AT FAIRVIEW
The Stonington Lodge #26 I.O.O.F. held its fourth
annual Christmas Party on December 19 at the Fair-
view Odd Fellows Home of Connecticut for children
in Groton and Stonington. Through the hard work
of lodge mem-
bers Charlie and
Anita Beebe, and
their ‘elves,’ a
bright Christmas
was assured for
the 48 children
and their parents
who attended.
Individual spon-
sors made finan-
cial donations so that each child received two pre-
sents plus a stocking full of goodies. Pictured is one
of the children with Santa and his helpers.
