Grace and peace to God’s

people in Jesus Christ.

We live in a broken world.

Events covered in headline

news, the experiences of

our day to day lives, the

insecurities of emotional

relationships and bank

accounts – so many things

reinforce for us that this

brokenness is real.

This reality impacts how

we live out our lives as

God’s people. One area

where this becomes

contentious, as some of you

may have heard in worship

on February 26, is in the

field of Christian outreach,

especially “overseas”

missions. Obviously, for

those who reject the idea of

“god”, especially the God

of the Christian faith, any

attempts to change people’s

spiritual belief is wrong.

But even among Christians

there are differences of

opinion about how such

outreach should happen. Is

the call we have been given

one to “simply” proclaim

Jesus Christ and him

crucified, or does it involve

encouraging, even

directing, new believers to

reject at least some cultural

practices and moral

perspectives? Can one

share Christ without also

caring for the needs of

people one encounters –

and if you can’t, which

comes first? Is caring for

physical needs without

verbally sharing the Gospel

really mission?

Without trying to give a

specific answer to any of

the above, I would invite

you to look at the church

year – specifically,

February 26th (The

Transfiguration of our

Lord) and March 1 (Ash

Wednesday), together with

the season of Lent which

March 1 introduces. Jesus

knew that his disciples

were people just like us,

sinners living in a broken

world. They had hopes and

fears, dreams and dread,

joys and sorrows. And in a

very short time they would

be encountering events

which would turn their

world upside down.

Thus the mountain top

experience – Jesus in all his

glory as God contained

within that human body

which he had received

from the Virgin. As James,

Peter and John see that

glory they realize the

possibility of paradise lost

and long to stay within it.

But they are called to

come down from the

mountain and into the

first Lent, if you will.

The glory of God cannot

be shared by humans

without the debt of sin

being paid. And the

wages of sin – Death!

And not just physically

dying, but the agony of

eternal separation from

God. It is all we can earn

by our efforts. It is what

we deserve, devastating

as that is. And the real

irony is that if we pay it,

we can never share in

God’s glory anyway,

because the payment is to

be separated from that

glory forever. The

ultimate in “catch 22”

experiences.

Thus the Lenten journey

we begin on March 1.

But note carefully – it is

not our journey. We

simply follow along to

view what happens, and

the one to whom it

happens, and why it

happens. What happens

is suffering and death;

more importantly, the

suffering of “my God, my

God, why have you

forsaken me?” That is the

payment that is needed.

Who suffers? None other

than the very Son of God,

who sheds his blood and

sacrifices his life to pay

the debt of the world’s sin.

And the why of that first

journey by Jesus? So that

you and I don’t have to

make the payment! We

get the gift instead. John’s

words in his Gospel state it

so clearly. “God loved the

world so much that he

gave his only begotten Son

so that everyone who

believes in him may have

eternal life. For the Father

did not send the Son into

the world to condemn it,

but in order that the world

might be saved through

him.” (John 3:16-17)

May God help you to

follow and to be enriched

in all spiritual blessings

during the journey.

World Day of Prayer 2017

“Am I Being Unfair To You?”

Written by the World Day of Prayer Committee of

The Philippines

World Day of Prayer is a worldwide movement of Christian women of many traditions who come together on

the first Friday of March each year to observe a common day of prayer. Through World Day of Prayer, we

affirm our faith in Jesus Christ and engage with the whole world, are enriched by the faith experience of

Christians of other countries and cultures, share the burdens of other people by praying with them and for them,

and use our own talents in the service of God’s world. Prayer and action are inseparable and both have

immeasurable influence in the world.

We will join our neighbours in celebrating World Day of Prayer at:

Brooks United Church

Christ’s death and

resurrection. The local

congregation is where our

spiritual needs are met

when Christ’s atonement

is preached, when the

forgiveness of sins is

proclaimed, when we were baptized into the

name of the Triune God,

and when we partake of

the body and blood of the

risen and living Lamb of

God.

But how much are we to

give to this local

congregation? His

instructions are these: to

give regularly (1 Cor 6:1–

2), proportionally (1 Cor

16:1–2; 2 Cor 8:12), and

generously (2 Cor 8:20) of

our first fruits (Gen 4:4;

Prov 3:9; Lev 27:30) with

a spirit of eagerness (2

Cor 9:2), earnestness (2

Cor 8:7), cheerfulness (2

Cor 9:7), and love (2 Cor

8:23).

Thus, giving to the church

is not to be an

afterthought, given after

everything else is spent. In

this way, it is deliberate.

We give it regularly,

whenever we have

income. We set it aside

beforehand, before

anything else is spent.

From those first fruits, we

set aside a proportionate

and generous amount. Ten

percent was the standard

for the Israelites. Tithing

was a command for them.

St. Paul never mentions a

tithe.

Since a tithe was the bare

minimum for the people

of Israel in the Old

Testament, perhaps St.

Paul had more in mind.

That aside, however, ten

percent is an easy way to

figure out an amount. You

simply move your weekly,

bi-weekly, bi-monthly,

monthly, or yearly income

one decimal point to the

left. And that’s it. That’s

what you put in the

offering plate to support

your local congregation so

that you may continue to

be a hearer of God’s word

by sharing all good things

with those who teach it to

you.

And how are we to give

it? We give it with

eagerness and earnestness.

We give it cheerfully and

with love, not out of

compulsion. For through

the preaching of the

gospel and the

administration of the

sacraments, God has made

us His children, forgiven

us all our sins, given us

grace upon grace,

promised us life

everlasting with Him in

His kingdom, and filled us

with His own Spirit, the

Holy Spirit. This makes

giving a joy. For it is more

blessed to give than to

receive (Acts 20:35).

In repentant joy, then, do

we hear God’s Word on

giving, and we let that

Word dwell in us richly.

We let that word wash

over our ears and seep

into

Lent is a season of

repentant joy. There is

joy in repentance

because in repentance,

God, through His

Word, turns us away

from our sins — our

failures of thought,

word, and deed — to

believe in the

forgiveness and new

life He has

accomplished for us in

the death and

resurrection of His Son.

For our God is our

Father, and fathers

discipline their

children. He loves us

enough to point out

when and where we

have erred, so that we

are not weighed down

by false belief, despair,

and other great shame

or vice.

Thus we do well to

listen to God’s Word,

His own teaching, about

giving. St. Paul exhorts:

“Anyone who receives

instruction in the word

must share all good

things with his

instructor” (Gal 6:6).

This means that the

local congregation is

primary. In other

words, everything else

that we might give to

during the year —

laudable and worthy

charities — are to be on

top of what we give to

our local congregation.

For the local

congregation is the

place that serves us

with the gifts of

COMMUNION REGISTRATION /

VISITOR CARDS

Following several months of discussion

among the Worship Committee, the Board

of Deacons, the Church Council and the

Office and Pastoral Staff the decision has

been made to replace our current pew cards.

Several factors were considered, including that only a small percentage of

those communing tend to fill in the communion side of the cards. Another

consideration was the time and cost for reprinting and restocking all the

cards, which are often used for other purposes (scrap paper, notes, children

colouring, etc.). Our intention is to rework a card which will include some

of the name / address / phone number side information and make them

available as part of a visitor welcome package and / or at the worship

centre outside the worship area. This is part of an overall review of our

record keeping and counting procedures, as many of the items we have

tracked in the past were requirements for forms which had to be submitted

each year to the ELCIC when we were still affiliated with that body. If

you would like more information about this process, please talk to Pastor

John or Maggie, the office staff or a Deacon.
