HIGH SCHOOL

FROM THE DESK OF MRS. SHERRY SPROWLakota High School Principal

The school year is off to a great start. I would like to thank our high school staff and students for their hard work and positive attitudes as we begin the 2016-2017 school year. The high school has several new staff members this year: Mr. Aaron Brown, math teacher; Mr. Cole Fittro, art teacher; Mrs. Melissa Renfro, intervention specialist; Mrs. Angie Babcock, paraprofessional; Mrs. Barb Kaser, paraprofessional and Mr. Troy Albright, In-school Suspension Monitor. These new staff members are an excellent addition to our outstanding high school staff.

Homecoming week was filled with many fun activities. The classes participated in and competed for the coveted title of Homecoming Week Champions. The week ended with an all school pep rally, football game and a dance. I would like to extend a special thank you to the Student Council Members and Student Council Advisors for a fantastic week of fun.

The fall sports seasons are well underway and our athletes have been working very hard. The music programs have also been busy rehearsing and preparing for several upcoming performances. Good luck to all of our fall participants.

As we embark on another year, I appreciate the opportunity to serve our school district and community as Lakota High School’s principal.

Last May, three of our High School band students were chosen to be a part of this year’s All-Ohio State Fair Band. At the beginning of August, Jonathan Mason (Sousaphone), Brandon Lane (Trumpet) and Caleb Chal-fin (Trombone) headed to Columbus, Ohio. During the three weeks they were there, they participated in several hours of practicing, marching and performing with the rest of the State Fair Band. Congratulations Jonathan, Brandon and Caleb!!! Way to make Lakota proud!

ALL-OHIO STATE FAIR YOUTH CHOIR

Kim Boyer, Lakota High School Senior and Jessica James, former Lakota Student, represented Lakota schools by participating in the All-Ohio State Fair Youth Choir this past summer. This was Kim’s second year and Jessica’s third year with the select choir.

The 200 members of the choir are selected each spring on the basis of their ability and experience, the recommendation of their high school choral director, and the consent and support of their parent or guardian. The Youth Choir sings six to eight concerts a day and marches up to ten miles a day to various performance sites around the 360 acre fair-grounds during the fair.

Kim states, “State Fair Choir is one of the best experiences I have ever done.” Kim & Jessica join many alumni from the Lakota community in taking part in this choral experience. We thank Kim & Jessica for representing Lakota!

MIDDLE SCHOOL

FROM THE DESK OF MR. PATRICK FLANAGANLakota Middle School Principal

The school year is off to a great start and the staff and students are settling into their daily routines. Lakota Middle School has many exciting events and activities that are aimed at the education of the whole child. To keep up-to-date on everything going on at LMS, please follow us on Twitter at lakota_middle. Student images will not be used unless prior authorization has been given by a parent/guardian.

Students are reminded daily of the expectations of them as it relates to the dress code. The complete dress code can be found on page 18 of the Student Handbook located in the student agendas. Areas of focus are leggings/yoga pants. They cannot be worn by themselves but rather under dress/shorts. Finally, jeans should be free of holes. First period teachers will do checks each morning and students who are found to be out of compliance will be sent to the main office to call home for a change of clothes. Con-tinued violations of the dress code will result in further disciplinary actions as outlined in the handbook. Your assistance with this matter is appreciated.

MIDDLE SCHOOL ACADEMIC CHALLENGE

Please remember to watch out for buses on our roadways. They make frequent stops as they deliver our most valuable assets! Please remind students who ride our buses to always follow the safety rules! These rules are in place for the safety of all passengers on the bus. All students should use the same behavior on the bus as they would in the classroom! Our district is one of the largest in the state of Ohio. So, whether you’re a parent, a student, or a driver on the roads in our district or any other district, always keep School Bus Safety in mind.

Hello, Lakota families! As the 2016-2017 school year is in full swing

your Lakota Athletic Boosters would like to take the time to first off say WELCOME BACK as well as introduce ourselves, as we have had some changes to our board recently.

President: Heidi Miller “I am a Lakota graduate from the class of

1992. My husband, Joe, also attended Lakota and my three children, Samantha 16’, Brian 18’ and Justin 21’ attend(ed) Lakota as well.

I started attending meetings and helping as a volunteer when my oldest was in Junior High. I continued on as a board member when the members before me had stepped down. I have been a board member since 2013. I enjoy being on the board and being able to help the coaches with their needs that the Athletic Department cannot fulfill. I decided to become a board member because I enjoy working with everyone at the school and do-ing the little things behind the scenes to help make our athletes great.

Vice President: Elizabeth Strobel “I am the proud mom to my boys, David

and Alex, who will graduate from Lakota in the classes of 2020 and 2021.

I decided to become a board member because I am passionate about not only my boys but our school and our athletes. I wanted to help them in whatever way that I could. For those of you that already know me, you know that I can be a force to be reckoned with when sell-ing those awesome 50/50 tickets. I felt that being a board member would be the best way for me to help our school as well as my boys to be successful. I can’t wait to see what lies ahead and to be part of all that I can to make our athletic program be the best that it can be.

Secretary: Andrea BartsonI am the proud mom of three wonderful

Raiders, Jaymn (freshman), Wesley (8th grade) and Kolette (2nd grade). While neither my husband nor I are graduates of Lakota, we are proud to be members of this community and school district. Our boys started playing sports while very young and haven’t stopped since. Football, Cross Country, Track and Wrestling are just a few that they have participated in over the years. So as you can imagine, we stay pretty busy and are at the school quite a bit. With having a daughter in elementary now, it doesn’t look like things will be changing anytime soon.

After having some questions regarding some of our athletics last year, asking some questions and having them answered it only made sense that I become part of the betterment of our

school, and their athletic program. I joined the board this year and honestly have no idea what I have gotten myself into, but life’s an adventure, so why not enjoy the ride. I look forward to getting to know our players, parents and coaching staff better. I also look forward to helping all of our athletes be as happy and successful as possible.

Treasurer: Becky Geyman I am a member of the Lakota community and

a proud parent of two Lakota student athletes, Katelyn (sophomore) and Ethan (8th) Klotz. My husband Roger is a graduate of Lakota.

I started attending athletic booster meetings in 2012 to help raise money for new uniforms for the Jr. High Girls Basketball team. I en-joyed being involved with the boosters and became a board member, as treasurer, in the summer of 2014 after previous board members stepped down. I enjoy helping give our athletes the best uniforms and equipment we can. I also enjoy working with the coaches and our athletic department. It is nice to belong to an organization where all the involved parties get along well with each other. Beyond my duties as the treasurer of the boosters, I also manage the uniform assignments and collection for all the teams here at Lakota. I am grateful to be a part of a community that supports our student athletes. Even though I’m not a Lakota graduate, I am very proud to now call myself a Lakota Raider!

Member at Large: Chassity KaysI’m a proud parent of an open enrolled 8th

grader!  My son, Austin, transferred to Lakota in 2nd grade. Best decision I made for him regarding his education and athletic oppor-tunities!  A big part of the easy transition to Lakota was the Biddy XC program.  Austin was able to meet a great group of runners his age before school even started!  The coaches and runners showed what being a part of the Lakota family truly means!  Moving from cross country to the Biddy Basketball program was a breeze. Again, awesome players and coaches that have encouraged, guided and molded him into a great student and athlete.

As he grows older he will continue to be a part of the athletic program which is why I wanted to be involved with the boosters!  I enjoy being a part of the Lakota community and will help out when and where needed!  Together anything is possible!

You are welcome to join us at Athletic Boosters meetings. They are held on the first Wednesday of each month. We meet in the Staff Dining Room at 6:00 p.m. Thank you for your support!

NEW SCHOOL MESSENGER ALERT SERVICE We believe it is important to communicate

with our families.  One way we do that is with our instant message system. We have switched the provider of our instant alerts. We are using a company called School Messenger. They have many exciting features that were not available with our previous provider.

The phone numbers and emails that will be used initially are the contacts listed in our student information system. If you would like to be able to change how you are contacted, we will need a current email address in our

system. Please send your current email ad-dress using the link provided and we will enter that into our student information system. Once your address is in, you will be able to go to  infocenter.schoolmessenger.com  and create an account that will allow you to add numbers and addresses to your profile. If you have any questions please contact your child’s school office.

MRS. BRICKMAN’S SOCIAL STUDIES CLASS LEARNS ABOUT 9/11

The seventh and eighth grade history classes set time aside on Friday, September 9 to Remember 9/11. Students in Mrs. Brickman’s eighth grade classes watched a National Geographic video documenting a timeline of events from early that morning to days following the horrific events that took place in 2001.  The seventh graders watched a twenty minute video to review the events of the day with deep discussion and then created an 8 1/2 by 11 art project of their choice to show their respect and remembrance for the day.  Students could chose acrostics, poems, murals, collages, 3-D objects and more.  Each student was then asked to place a certain number of stars on their project to represent lives lost on 9/11.  As the projects hang together outside Mrs. Brickman’s door, the stars altogether represent the 2,977 lives that were taken innocently on 9/11.

On November 10, 2016, a group of intrepid 7th and 8th graders will represent Lakota Middle School by participating in the North Point ESC Academic Challenge at Clyde High School. Students will compete in teams of 4, answering a variety of questions on academic subjects, as well as topics such as space, sports, travel, and local, state and world events. Dur-ing practices, they will read a book about the Wright Brothers by Russell Freedman and

prepare to answer questions from that piece of literature.

Good luck to our seventh graders: Zoie Lamb, Jenna Juarez, Libby Blausey, Han-nah Wasserman, Jorden Dunfee and eighth graders: Dakota Dukett, Ethan Klotz, Emma Chalfin, Haleigh Potteiger, Eric Zuelzke, and Reilly Cozette.

Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. Clark will serve as advisors/coaches for the team.

Our wonderful School Therapy Dog, Lansbury, turned four years old on Monday, September 26th. Lansbury is of the breed of dogs called GOLDEN RETRIEVER. He went through two full years of train-ing, through an organization called AS-SISTANCE DOGS FOR ACHIEVING INDEPENDENCE, before being placed at Lakota Schools. He participates in a re-fresher course each summer to keep his skills sharp. His role at school is to provide love and comfort for students and staff members. He is very gentle and can help calm those who are feeling stress or anxiety. He loves pets and cuddles and frequently does what we affectionately call “The Lansbury Lean.” We believe this is his way of giving HUGS!

Lansbury belongs to Lakota Local Schools. He resides with Mrs. Nancy Slot-terbeck, the 7-12 School Counselor, and her husband. They serve as his handlers and foster parents. He comes to school every day with Mrs. Slotterbeck and can be found in her office, in the hallways or in classrooms, giving love and support to others.

You may also see him with Mrs. Michelle Schaser, one of our elementary teachers, who has also been trained as a handler. The very BEST thing that you can do for him is be gentle and loving and give him your atten-tion! He thrives on your devotion most of all!

But, if you would like to get him a small token of your love, here are a few things that he enjoys! Lansbury must eat a grain-free diet.

He eats… • Blue Buffalo Freedom Grain-Free

Food/ Chicken Recipe For Adult Dogs. This is available at Tractor Supply, Rural King and most pet stores.

• Abound Grain-Free Jerkey Treats In Green Peas & Turkey or Duck & Potato. These are available at Kroger Stores.

• Turbopup K-9 Superfood Snacks--- Grain-Free. There are four varieties and these are also available at Kroger Stores.

Lansbury loves to chew on…• Nylabones or Kong chews. They are

very durable and safe for him. (He cannot have rawhide bones or animal hooves.)

Lansbury loves to carry around… • Stuffed animals that are made for dogs.

å These generally have sewn-on eyes and details, not buttons and other things that could choke or harm him.

He will proudly wear… • A bandana or scarf around his neck.• He fits into a child’s size 6X t-shirt

quite nicely! Lansbury’s food and medical bills are paid

for through a special fund set up in his honor. Thanks to many supporters, we raised $175 through our Kona Ice Fundraiser at our Open House.

If you would like to make a monetary con-tribution toward Lansbury’s care, please send it to Lakota Local Schools, in care of Norm Elchert, Lakota Local Schools Treasurer.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY LANSBURY!!

Chloe Nighswander saved pennies for Lansbury's birthday and made him a cool container and card. Lansbury is wearing a SUPERMAN t-shirt and cape... because

we think he is a SUPER-HERO!

Almost 1 out of every 3 American adults has high blood pressure, but only about half of those affected have their blood pressure under control. Everyone should have regular blood pressure checks so that you “know your num-bers” and then take steps to keep the numbers within the recommended levels. A normal blood pressure reading should be no higher than 120/80 and ideally should be lower than that. Often, there are no symptoms to alert a person that their blood pressure is too high, but there can be serious health problems if

high blood pressure is not treated or controlled. The following healthy habits can help to pre-vent or control high blood pressure: eating a healthy diet with limited salt, exercising on a regular basis, not smoking, limiting alcohol, maintaining a healthy weight, reducing stress, and having your blood pressure checked on a regular basis. It is good to “know your numbers” and take action when needed. Source: http://www.cdc.gov/bloodpressure/facts.htm

WOULD YOU LIKE TO DONATE A TREE?

One thing we always have out here at Lakota is wind. Our playground on the west side of the building often feels like a wind tunnel. One of our projects this spring will be the planting of a windbreak for the playground. If you would like to donate a tree in honor or memory of someone, as an alumni class proj-ect, or anonymously, please contact the Board Office at 419-986-6650. The cost is $200 for each tree. We will have a plaque posted on the side of the building with the names of all donors. Thank you for your support!

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL FROM THE DESK OF MRS. DANA WARD

Principal At Lakota ElementaryLakota Elementary students and staff are off to another fabulous start to the new

school year! We are so excited to be able to provide students with exciting learning opportunities to help them learn and grow every day as individuals, both education-ally and socially.

One of these opportunities is our Project MORE Program. Project MORE, Mentor-ing in Ohio for Reading Excellence, is an evidence based reading research volunteer mentoring program for students. Independent research findings consistently report students make month for month reading level gains when they are 1:1 reading men-tored four times/week for 30 minutes. This means we need YOU to volunteer to read with our students! If you can spare a half hour or more every week, please call our school at 419-986-6640 or email Mrs. Megan Downs at [email protected]. Spread the word!

We also encourage students to behave appropriately while striving for academic excellence. Our positive behavior program focuses on our three B’s: BE KIND: Re-spect Others, BE SAFE: Respect the Rules, and BE YOUR VERY BEST: Respect Yourself. Students are rewarded for going above and beyond through our Caught Being Good reward system.

School success is best accomplished when there is a partnership with our families and our school. The interest that you show in your student’s daily work, as well as the patience and encouragement you provide at home, are key ingredients that will help our students become successful in both school and in life.

Check out our new Facebook page! Just search Lakota Elementary School and “like” the page. We will post pictures and videos of the adventures we go while at school, as well as updates and reminders. This is just another way that we are trying to stay connected with our parents and community!

I’ve been very impressed with the dedication to education that I have seen from staff, students, families, and the community. I’ve loved the opportunities I have had to get to know our students and many of you in the community and I look forward to a promising and productive school year!

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 186:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

at Lakota Local School

IT IS A SAFE WAY FOR THE STUDENTS TO TRICK OR TREAT!

The Begindergarteners are work-ing hard to learn our rules and routines. They are also working on strengthening their fine motor skills in preparation for all of the writing tasks that are to come. We have started learning about our Let-ter Land friends and are learning numbers in math. Autumn is a great time for these kids to get outside and explore nature. Take a short walk in the evenings and have the kids tell about their favorite color of leaves, have them count how many of those leaves they can find, have them tell stories about different critters and bugs they see. Look up different caterpillars to see what they will become later. All these help build language and vocabulary skills which are essential for learning how to read and write.

WELCOME TO THE FIRST BEGINDERGARTEN CLASS OF 2030!!

Many students have done a great job of settling into our classroom routines. This can be a difficult transition but everyone seems to be adjusting well. Kindergarten is an important year. This year sets the foundation for the rest of their academic success. We need to work together as a team to create a positive home-school connection. We have started our Letter Land Phonics, Reading and Math curriculum. Encourage your student to talk about what they are learning in school and help them practice at home. One of the most important things you can do is read to your child and talk about what you have read. This helps build vocabulary and will help them with comprehension and concepts of print. We are looking forward to an exciting year of learning!

WELCOME CLASS OF 2029!!

ELEMENTARY BELL SYSTEMLakota Elementary has implemented a bell system this school year. *Doors will open at 7:30 a.m. and students should arrive between 7:30 & 7:50 a.m. All

students will go to the auditeria. If they eat breakfast, they will eat as soon as they arrive.*Students who ride the bus will go straight to the auditeria instead of the classroom if they

will be eating breakfast.*The WARNING bells will ring at 7:55 and 8:00 a.m. These bells inform students that they

have 5 minutes to be in their classroom seats.*The FINAL morning bell will ring at 8:05 a.m. Every student including those who eat

breakfast will need to be in their classroom seat ready to learn. They will be counted as TARDY if they arrive in their seats after the 8:05 a.m. bell.

*There will also be bells that ring at the end of the day. The pick-up bell will ring at 2:35 p.m. and students will be dismissed to the pick-up area. The final elementary bell will ring at 2:40 p.m. All other students will be dismissed at the final bell.

CAUGHT BEING GOOD PROGRAM

Our Caught Being Good program encourages students to make good choices throughout the school day and throughout the school environment. Mrs. Ward and the staff will informally distribute white tickets when observing students who are making good choices that go above our normal expectations. Examples might be, but are not limited to: picking up trash on the floor, saying good morning to others, sitting

with a student at lunch that is alone, complimenting others, etc. The student will write their name on the back of the ticket, bring it to the office, and put

it into the “Caught Being Good Fishbowl”. Mrs. Ward also will stamp the students hand and thank them for making a good choice. At the end of the month, tickets will be drawn from the fishbowl. Selected names will be recognized during the morning announcements and student pictures will be placed on the bulletin board and in the monthly newsletter. In addition those students will be rewarded by having lunch with Mrs. Ward on the stage. They will also receive a “Caught Being Good” certificate and a balloon.

2ND GRADE NEWSWelcome 2nd grade students and parents. It has been exciting getting to know each and every

one of our students so far this year. Some information to help the school year go smoothly is to remember that you can get access to our Journey’s book from the Lakota School website using the elementary tab. You can read our stories each night as well as looking at the vocabulary and grammar sections to help prepare for the weekly lesson. Our Math series is Go Math. Please review the daily math papers that come home to help check for understanding of the new math concept. A few of our major focuses this year is to encourage students to explain how they found an answer and justify why their answer is correct. Another focus is to have students look in the text/story to find specific details to answer extended response questions. Remember to contact your child’s teacher if you have any questions.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

3RD GRADE NEWSWelcome back to school!  The year is off to a great start in third grade.  Students have

been working on three digit addition and subtraction.  We will then explore collecting and displaying data through various types of graphs.  Graphing and mapping skills have also been introduced in Social Studies.  Students have learned what political and physical maps are and what county our school is located in.  Accelerated Reader goals have been set based on the STARS Reading Test given at the beginning of the year.  Many students are on their way to meeting their goal.  This year, third grade is participating in ”Un-Homework.”  Students are given a choice of completing various tasks based on what they learned that week.  Upon completing tasks, they can turn in a ticket for a drawing.  As always, please read with your student, practice flashcards and watch their ”Take Home” folder for important information.

Lakota Elementary School has a new Facebook page!

Search for Lakota Elementary School and “LIKE” the page. We will post some of our exciting adventures throughout the year as well as updates and

reminders. If your student attends Lakota Elementary, don’t forget to return the Consent to Use Student Images form.

JOIN LAKOTA ELEMENTARY IN BREAKING A GUINNESS WORLD RECORD AGAIN!

Students and staff at Lakota Elementary will again be tak-ing part in the Speed Stack World Record Day on Thursday, November 14th from 8:15 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.  They will be join-ing hundreds of thousands of other students from different countries around the world doing the same thing, Stacking Cups.  This big event returns to Lakota after helping suc-cessfully set a new world record last year, in hopes of making this year even bigger and better.  Be on the lookout for more information and come join us in being a part of history.

...to all our friends with birthdays in

September & October!

FROM THE DESK OF NORM ELCHERTTreasurer of Lakota SchoolsThe school year is off to a great start. It

is great to have our wonderful students and staff back in the building. As I read the news or in talking with families, one thing that continues to be brought up is the great opportunity we are providing students in offering the opportunity to earn college credit while they are still in High School. With the cost of college tuition always increasing it allows our students a chance to save money by taking these courses for free while they attend High School. No one wants to take on all of the debt a 2 or 4 year degree can lead to. I am happy that our students are taking advantage of this free college education and I am sure my sons will do the same. However, one thing I do dislike about the program is that our state leadership touts how they are providing free

tuition for students and we all know nothing is free. The families I talked with had no idea how this program was funded. Our state takes credit for the program and our colleges benefit from increased enrollment but who pays for it? Your local tax dollars are funding this program. The taxes you pay for your local school district to provide education for students in Pre K – 12 grades are now going to fund college education. We did not get extra funds earmarked for College Credit Plus from the state. We were just informed that this is another program the state has implemented but not provided additional funding for. Again, I am totally in favor of anything that benefits our students but I want to make sure to keep you informed of who pays for this “Free” college education.

FROM THE DESK OF HEATHER SIMPKINSSpecial Education DirectorABLE accounts (Achieving a Better Life Experience)

I wanted to share with you an exciting new program for people with disabilities. For the first time, people with disabilities can open a special ABLE account to save money without jeopardizing their government benefits. ABLE accounts can have up to $100,000 without risking eligibility for Social Security and other government benefits. This is an exciting step for people with disabilities, who can now save for things, such as a car, house, education, etc...with no risk of losing their benefits! In order to set up an account, there is an initial $50 de-posit required and an annual fee of $30. Accounts can be set up by individuals or by parents/guardians. For more information and to open an account, please go to http://stableaccount.com. Please call or email me if you need any help or have any questions at 419-986-6650 or [email protected].

LAKHI CAFÉ NEWSMrs. Michelle Guzman, Food Service Supervisor

We are off to a great start in the cafeteria and the students are enjoying their lunches! Just a reminder that for $1.50 for breakfast, you get a milk, a choice of fruit, choice of juice, cereal with graham crackers or a hot item. We have a variety of breakfast pizza, pancake sausage sticks, pop tarts, bagels with cream cheese, flavored bagels, french toast, pancakes, waffles, and breakfast sandwiches. We rotate the hot offerings, so stop in the cafeteria in the morning to see what’s hot!!
