One of our parents commented that she enjoyed seeing the different classrooms across the school. Equally exciting was to receive such positive feedback from new parents about the breadth of opportunities available at our school for our students and families. Attitudes To School Survey. We want our students to tell us what they think.

Flemington Primary School is conducting a survey to find out what your child thinks of our school. The Attitudes To School Survey is an annual student survey offered by the Department of Education and Training (DET). Next Friday the 19th of May is National Walk Safely to School Day! National Walk Safely to School Day is an annual event when all Primary School children are encouraged to walk and commute safely to school. This community event promotes Road Safety, Health, Public Transport and the Environment. The SRC team would love to see everyone walk to school next Friday! Students who participate will receive a special sticker, and the class who has the most students walk to school will be presented with a special certificate!

Walking everyday has been proven to have amazing health benefits! Here is a little quiz to help you learn about how walking to school can improve your life!

1. True or False? Walking fast is just as good as going on a run.

True! If you walk fast enough to raise your heart rate, temperature and breathing, you can still reap the same kind of

rewards as a run on the treadmill.

2. True or False? Walking regularly has been proven to cause chemical changes in your brain.

True! Scientists state that physical activity can cause chemical changes in the brain, such as the release of endorphins,

which can positively charge your mood. This, in turn, can positively impact your level of motivation and self-esteem,

boosting your energy levels.

3. Which of the following are proven impacts of walking?

A. You become more creative

B. It prevents dementia

C. You are less likely to get serious diseases

D. You have an increased risk of growing an extra leg

A, B&C are correct!

Researchers gave subjects a creative thinking test while seated and whilst walking and the walkers thought

more creatively than the sitters!

Older people who walk 9km or more per week are more likely to avoid brain shrinkage and preserve memory

as the years pass. Since dementia affects one in 14 people over 65 and one in six over 80, we reckon that’s a

pretty great idea.

A regular walking habit slashes the risk of type 2 diabetes by around 60 percent, and you’re 20 percent less

likely to develop certain types of cancers with an active hobby such as walking!

4. In a recent study, it was found that walking to work and school can save you money. How much money

do you think a person can save if they walk to school or work 4 days a week?

A. $980

B. $55.79

C. $1,209

D. $1,456

D is correct! Using your Myki costs $7 a day. If you multiply $7 by 4 days, that’s $28.00 a week. There are 52 weeks in

a year, so $28 x 52 weeks mean you’re spending $1,456 just to sit in a stuffy, slow tram!

We hope we have convinced you that Active Kids are Smarter and Happier Kids! So put on your walking shoes

and walk to school next Friday the 19th of May!

In Touch Newsletter Distribution Update

Please note that we are going to move to distribution of a digital copy every week of our InTouch newsletter instead of our paper copy one week and the E-newsletter the alternative week. There are a number of reasons such as…

To be environmentally friendly and set a good model for our students and community

Cut down on our use of paper and printing

Office staff are spending literally hours every fortnight printing, counting notices and then distributing to

every class

More cost efficient

The E version is more visually appealing and is in COLOUR.

The many parents telling me they are finding the paper version of the newsletter in the bottom of their child’s

bag months later!

Anyone who is still wanting to receive the paper copy as per the current system, are asked to fill in the form in this newsletter and we will organise a hard copy to be sent home with your child. Arabic

FPS Parent & Carer’s Committee (HUB) Ellen Connor, Alice Blake, Garth Hardiman & Janine

Donohue E:[email protected]

Thankyou – Mother’s Day Stall

Thank you to everyone who contributed to and volunteered their time for the Mother’s day stall last Friday. It was great fun watching the students carefully choose the gifts for their loved ones, swap - then choose again, exchange - and pick up something completely different. What is the HUB?

The Flemington Primary School Parent and Carers Association is known as the HUB. It is made up of volunteers from the school community. There is a committee made up of Co-presidents Ellen Connor and Alice Blake, Treasurer Garth Hardiman and Secretary, Janine Donohue. There is no formal requirement to be a member of the HUB and everyone in the school community is welcome to be a general member of the HUB. There is also a canteen coordinator, Lucy Shaw, who manages canteen activities such as selling icy poles after school. What does the HUB do?

Our role is to fundraise for the school and hold events that support the school, encourage a sense of community and enhance our children’s enjoyment of school. Some of the events we organise include special lunches (a lunch order once a term) school concert catering, Mother’s/Father’s Day stalls and a fete every second year. Can anyone be in the HUB?

Yes all parents, guardians and carers are welcome! Whether you want to get involved and do a lot or just a little, there are all sorts of ways to help out. Currently we are selling icy poles after school 3 days a week during the summer term and new volunteers to assist are always welcome. As other events come along we’ll call for volunteers and keep you updated on what is happening. We would also love to hear your ideas too! When does the HUB meet?

Every second month the HUB meets in the school staffroom generally on a Monday evening. The meetings are advertised in the school newsletter. Everyone is welcome to attend the meetings which are usually about organising the next activity or planning events. You don’t have to attend meetings to be involved.

How are HUB funds distributed?

All money raised by the HUB from icy pole sales or other fund-raisers is used for the benefit of the school community to support the students, for example improving the school grounds, buying class readers or bean bags for the school library. The School Council has the final say on the distribution of the funds. Communicating with the community

We communicate via the school newsletter, FlexiBuz (the school app) or by email to people who have agreed to be contacted about HUB activities. If you would like to be on this email list please email us on [email protected]. Feel free to contact us with any questions, ideas or feedback via our email address or there is a HUB pigeon hole outside the school office where you can leave a note. We hope to meet you soon.
