From My Angle…..
Rev. Dr. Judy Angleberger
Lent is here. It begins with Ash Wednesday. What is each of
us going to do to observe Lent? Lent is the forty days before Easter
and a time of preparation for Holy Week or Passion Week of our
Lord Jesus Christ.
We are to be in a preparation mode. We can put it in terms of
“Give up or Get up”! We can “give up” something to improve our
faith, such as that which distracts us from spiritual growth. This
could be giving up too much television or social media, too much
consumerism, too much entertainment, or too much consumption of
food or drink—whatever distracts our time and attention from the
Triune God. During Lent we can plan to pray more, read Scripture
more, worship more, witness more, etc. We can think in terms of
giving up that which prevents us from becoming more like Jesus,
which is the process of sanctification.
Or we can “get up” and give more of our time and talents in
service, whether in our Church or in our Community. This may in-
volve spending more time in relationship with people, physically
meeting the needs of others, getting up and cleaning out our excess
“stuff” and giving it to those who can use it, buying food for our
Church pantry, getting up for Worship and staying for Sunday
School, getting up and spending time with and for the benefit of oth-
ers.

From My Angle (continued)…..
In Paul’s Second letter to the Thessalonians, he writes…”our God will make you worthy
of his call and will fulfill by his power every good resolve and work of faith, so that the name
of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God
and the Lord Jesus Christ.” (NRSV II Thess. 1:11b-12)
Lent is about growing in spirit and in favor with God. It is a time to think upon Jesus’
passion and all he did for us and the world. It is pleasing Him by our words and actions. It is
focusing more of our time, talents, and treasures on the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. “Give up
and Get up” to glorify our Lord Jesus who got up and gave up Himself for us.
Lent Begins on Ash Wednesday, February 10th: Lent is coming soon! It is meant to be a time of preparing ourselves spiritually for Christ’s coming on Easter. It all begins at North Sewickley Church with a service of repentance at 7:00 p.m. in the sanctuary. Please plan to start your Lent the right way by joining us for our Ash Wednesday ser-vice.

The Church Family Tree Quilt History
Tessa Lynn, daughter of Nick and
Connie Bargiband, was baptized on
Sunday, Nov. 15.
By Pat Vagias
Our Family Tree Quilt was constructed by
members of the Cum-Joy-Nus Class under the
direction of Donna Boots, a close friend of many
in our congregation but not a member of NSPC.
It originally hung in Fellowship Hall in a large
wooden shadow box frame with a Plexiglas front
that was made by Paul Eonta (Cathy Pflugh's dad)
and Don Aiken. The quilt is not traditionally quilted
with a batting. The leaves are fused to the face fabric
using a fusible iron-on webbing. The quilt was
stapled to the back of the frame to keep it stretched.
The quilt was presented to the church at a
ceremony commemorating the 150th anniversary of
the founding of NSPC in approximately 1997 under
the ministry of Dan White. During the church
renovation of 2015, the framed quilt was removed
from the wall to allow for added electrical pipes. It
was never updated since its dedication 18 years ago
and was becoming slightly mildewed; the staples
were damaging the fabric.
The quilt was removed from the frame which was given to Pine Valley Camp to be used
as a large display case. Pat Vagias updated the quilt by adding many additional leaves which
had been thoughtfully cut out and given to Dolores McDanel for safe keeping almost 20 years
ago. Names of new members who had joined the church since 1997 were added to the quilt.
A quilt sleeve was made at the top to accommodate a drapery rod which was donated by Don
Aiken (who had made the original frame). The original hanging board was inserted in the
bottom of the quilt to give added weight, allowing it to hang more evenly.
It was decided to place the quilt in the front stairwell which was much improved during
the renovation with a raised ceiling, new lighting and a bright paint color which compliment-
ed the quilt. Now that the quilt is accessible, new member's names can be added easily.
Many people had never noticed the quilt in Fellowship Hall. Its new prominent placement in
the stairwell will allow the quilt to be appreciated for being a work of art and a handcrafted
historical heirloom.
There are approximately 20 leaves available for the addition of new member's names. Fu-
ture leaves may be added using the original leaf patterns (found in the church office file cabi-
net) and any complementary cotton fabric. These leaves may be attached to the quilt with fu-
sible/iron-on webbing. A permanent marker can be used to write the names of future mem-
bers as well as ministers. It should be noted that only one space remains for a minister's
name.
Pictured are some of the original creators of the
Quilt - Don and Esther Aiken, Kathy Liller,
Ella Smilek and Mary Lou Eonta.

An EGMI administrative team visited NSPC last winter and are returning on Sunday, February 21st to update our congregation on the happenings at the orphanage as well as future hopes and needs. Pastor John Sorice, founder of EGMI, will deliver the Minute for Mission. The three member team will use the Sunday School hour to present. Sunday school teachers are invited to bring their classes, at their discretion.
In 2014, 5 members of NSPC traveled to Tanzania with Trust In Him, Ministries to repair a fire damaged roof at Center of Hope Orphanage.

To the Youth Group Carolers,
“Thanks each of you it was lovely”….
I will never forget hearing your voices singing to
me on the porch before Christmas. I had the flu
and it hit me hard and I was quite ill. You’ll never
know how much you lifted my spirits and how much
I appreciated you thinking of me.
Thanks so much,
Barbara McDanel
