Thoughts from Chrysostom Day Page 4 View From Above Flying Together Page 6 Snapshots And MUCH More Inside A Family Affair by Fr. John Since this Vaya’s theme is church governance, I got special permission from our gracious editor to write my column about a different topic, namely the seemingly ungovernable Anglican Communion. It was in the news in January when its primates (or heads of the world’s Anglican and Episcopal churches) scolded The Episcopal Church (TEC) in the United States for allowing its clergy to perform marriages without regard to sexual orientation. A January 18 headline in the World Religion News summed up most of the coverage: “Anglican Communion Suspends Episcopal Church.” “Suspend” is a word that comes naturally enough to journalists who are used to covering organizations that project power from the top down. But the Anglican Communion is more like Thanksgiving dinner with your parents and adult siblings and their spouses when the conversation veers toward politics. Say you’re for Trump, and they’re all for Sanders. What are the chances they’ll be able to suspend you from the family? The analogy has its limitations. But the Communion is indeed a family of churches, comprising 38 provinces and representing 165 countries. According to some estimates, it includes over 80 million communicants. Because of their treasured historical links to the worship and doctrines of the Church of England, they continue to associate and consult voluntarily.
