ASAR, the Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar has new powerful capabilities:
- electronically steered antenna- accessibility to a ~4 times wider swath and
thus faster revisiting times - incidence angle range: 15 - 45 degrees- alternating polarization mode- solid state memory It will continue the sequence of C band images
taken byERS 1 - 2 since 1992.

ASAR is an invaluable tool for earth observations. Its principal applications will be:
- agricultural, forest, and soil moisture monitoring- detecting land use changes- responding to natural hazards- geological exploration- topographic mapping- surface deformation measurements
