SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE From the Desk of Mr. Jon C. DetwilerGreetings Lakota Families,

I attended a rally in November on the Ohio State House Lawn with about 300 other superintendents from around the state. We were there to draw attention to some of the issues we see in our cur-rent system that need addressed. We are asking our legislators and State Board of Education to work with us to do two things…avoid a graduation rate disaster for this year’s junior class that got caught in the transition to the new graduation requirements and reduce the amount of time our students spend on standardized tests. We all agree that we should be held accountable and raise the standards for

our students. For the last 20 years every time the state has set standards for public schools we have reached those standards and we will do it again this time. I believe that public education, as laid out by our founding fathers, is still the best way to protect and preserve our democracy.

As I am writing this letter, I am reflect-ing on the Thanksgiving Holiday and the beginning of the Christmas season. The older I become the more I recognize that one of the most important things in this life are the relationships with the people around you. My hope is that you will keep your minds and hearts on the true meaning of the holidays.

Lakota Music Department wishes Trinity Morelock a huge congratulations on being ac-cepted as an alto in OMEA District II Honors Choir!  Trinity will join choral students from other neighboring schools who auditioned via CD and were accepted on their vocal talent demonstrated on the recording. Being a part of the ensemble requires her to rehearse on her own, be present for two short group rehearsals, and perform with these local students under

the direction of a renowned director. The concert will take place at Port Clinton High School on Saturday, January 14th at 7:00 p.m. This year will be Trinity’s first year in the ensemble.  Trinity is currently a sophomore at Lakota High School and plans to major in music.  This opportunity is an important one for her future career plans.  Please take a moment to congratulate her when you see her!

HIGH SCHOOLLAKOTA HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

VISIT OHIO STATE UNIVERSITYSubmitted by Mrs. Nancy Slotterbeck, School Counselor

On Wednesday, November 30, thirty-four high school students and four educators took part in two official college visits at The Ohio State University Main Campus, in Columbus, Ohio and The Ohio State University Marion Regional Campus, in Marion, Ohio. Admission representatives shared vital information about how to make sound decisions regarding college applications, student housing, meal plans, social and extracurricular involvement, college major selection, job placement and financing a college education. Students and staff also toured each setting and learned about the differences, similarities, and options of the main campus versus the regional campuses. Tom Alexander, Director of Admissions at OSU Marion, gave an excellent presentation about making good decisions in the college selection process and encouraged students to find a school that is a good “fit” for them based on their goals, interests and personal values.

This is the first field trip of this nature that has ever been organized for Lakota students. It is our hope that this experience will provide students with the tools, vocabulary and knowledge to explore additional colleges and make sound decisions about their educational and career goals.

MIDDLE SCHOOLFROM THE DESK OF MR. PATRICK FLANAGANLakota Middle School Principal

It is difficult to believe that we are quickly approaching the Holiday season and the second quarter is well under way. The first half of the school year has gone exception-ally well for our middle school students and staff and we are looking forward to 2017. This time of year can be difficult for students to remain focused on school which is why it is important to continue to emphasize your student’s performance and behavior in the classroom. Please continue to check Progress Book daily and contact teachers immediately if you have any concerns. The earlier we can intervene in a problem, the more likely it can be corrected.  Lakota Middle School staff members issue A.C.T. slips to those students who are not following school procedures. Students are to bring home the slip and have it signed by a parent/guardian. Students are to return all but the white copy of the sheet to the LMS staff member who issued it. These points are tracked and once students reach three points, a lunch detention is issued with additional points leading to progressive disciplinary actions.

As the weather turns colder and road conditions become more challenging for our bus drivers, it is vital for your student to follow the procedures established by the driver for correct behavior. Bus referrals will be issued for any student that causes a distraction to the driver or fails to follow the bus procedures as outlined by the driver.

A big thank you goes out to Mrs. Pam Clark and members of the LMS Student Council for a successful Halloween Dance on October 28. The student council planned, organized, and ran the activities and through sales of class T-shirts and concessions made a profit which is put right back into student activities. Our students had an enjoyable time while attending the dance and the next dance will be held in February.

Finally, thank you parents, grandparents and guardians for the hard work you do daily in the lives of our students. A good home and school relationship is one of the most important components in ensuring your student can be successful here at LMS.

MIDDLE SCHOOLEIGHTH GRADERS VISIT WASHINGTON D.C.On November 2-4, the eighth graders went to Washington D.C.  They visited many sites

such as Arlington National Cemetery, the memorials of Iwo Jima, World War II, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Martin Luther King, Korean War, Vietnam War, Lincoln, and Jefferson.  Other places included the Smithsonian Museums and the Holocaust Museum.  On the last day, the group took a tour of the Capitol Building and visited the 9/11 Pentagon Memorial where they found the stainless steel bench of Teresa M. Martin, a Lakota graduate.  This was a wonderful experience that will reinforce everything they will be learning in Social Studies this year.

The Middle School Student Council held its first event of the year, the Halloween Dance on October 28.  Many students wore costumes as they ate pizza, chips, and LOTS of pop!  The Student Council members cre-ated a fun picture backdrop for students to use, complete with many thematic props, for fun selfies throughout the dance.  We look forward to the next dance on February 10 for Valentine's Day.

The Student Council members are a hard working group and very excited about provid-

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

BEGINDERGARTEN NEWSThe Begindergarten class has really been working hard. We are learning about our Let-

ter Land friends, what letters they make and what sounds they say. We are also learning how to stretch out words so that we can hear all the sounds that are in them. In Math, we are working on our numbers, counting and same/different.

We helped celebrate the 50th day of school with the Kindergarteners by having a Sock Hop. We dressed like we were from the 50’s, danced to fun music and ate ice cream floats! Thank you to PTO for helping us celebrate!

For Thanksgiving, we earned feathers by working hard and learning some important concepts like counting, colors, letters, sounds, and shapes to name a few. Then we celebrated with the Kindergarteners by having a feast and showing off our feathers. Thank you to our parents for helping us enjoy a wonderful snack!

We are working hard on our behavior and staying on track at school so we can stay on Santa’s good list!

KINDERGARTEN NEWS

The Kindergarten classes are in full bloom! We are close to learning all of our letters and sounds and are excited about using what we have learned by turning them into words. We are practicing sight words and are beginning to learn how to read small sentences.

We celebrated the 50th day of school by having a 50’s Sock Hop. The students had a blast! They dressed like they were in the 50’s

and danced to songs from the 50’s. Thank you to PTO for paying for our ice cream floats!

PUBLIC NOTICEParents and eligible students may refuse to allow the Board to disclose any or all of “directory information” upon written notification to the Board within 15 days after receipt of this annual public notice.

First graders have been busy working on reading and math skills. Students spend much of the day reading and learning sight words. Our Journeys program gives them the opportunity to read both literature and informational texts. They are now using the iReady computer program to work on the skills

that each student needs to focus on. First graders are using the Go Math curriculum this year. They are working on using addition strategies to solve addition problems. Students are looking forward to our Christmas Around the World unit, in which they will study the cultures and customs of other countries.

It was great seeing so many families at con-ferences!  We appreciate the time and effort you put in to help your children succeed in school.  Please check your child’s folder daily and review the activities and skills completed at school, as well as continue reading with your child and working on math facts.  Improving these skills truly does make a difference!

We are looking forward to continuing the tradi-

tion of Christmas Around the World.  Students will visit each 2nd grade classroom to learn about the holiday traditions of different countries.  During this year’s Christmas Around the World, students will “visit” Russia, Italy, Germany and Mexico.  Ask your child what he/she learned about the traditions of other countries as well as what was his/her favorite holiday tradition.  Their answer may surprise you!!

”Multiplication Madness” has begun in third grade!  Strategies were taught and now students are working on mastering the basic facts.  As students master their facts, we look forward to having a friendly competition between the classes and within our own classrooms. Earth Science Standards.  They have enjoyed doing experiments on rocks and soil.  We look forward to learning about renewable/nonrenewable resources.  If you or anyone you know is a geologist at heart and would be willing to share what you know, please contact the elementary office.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOLNEWS FROM THE FOURTH GRADE

Fourth grade students spent the day ”Exploring Your Backyard” at the Sandusky County Fairgrounds in September.  They enjoyed the day learning about recycling, livestock, the water cycle, harvesting, and local aquatic life.  In October, we celebrated Fire Safety Week.  We are grateful to the Kansas and Bettsville Fire Departments who brought the smoke house, educat-ing us on what to do in case of a fire.  They also brought the ladder truck and a tanker truck to share with the kids.  Thank you!!  What an experience!  Multiplication has started up again in 4th grade.  Kids were introduced to their facts in previous years and are currently review-ing them.  Please make sure to be practicing these facts each night. Division is right around the corner.  We appreciated seeing you at parent teacher conferences and enjoyed getting to know many grandparents when we celebrated Grandparents Day at Lakota Elementary.  We are looking forward to seeing you again on December 15th when the 4th grade students have their music program.  We hope your holiday season is fantastic.

Jim Reinhart (Kansas Fire Department) introduces the fire house to students during Fire Safety Week in October. Students were able to experience what it is like to be in a smoke-filled room. They also followed fire safety tips to get out quickly.

Inside the smoke house, firemen talk with students about the importance of having working smoke alarms in their homes and how to safely escape a fire.

Students listen as a firefighter explains the different tools found on a fire truck and the purpose of each.

4th grade students participated in various “Exploring Your Backyard” stations in September at the Sandusky County Fairgrounds. Presenters did a fabulous job providing students with information and hands-on activities.

LAKOTA ELEMENTARY CELEBRATES GRANDPARENTS DAYGrandparents Day was celebrated Monday, November 21 and Tuesday,

November 22. The attendance of those days was awesome! Grandparents arrived and were joined by their grandkids and enjoyed cookies and juice. The children in all classes learned and practiced a poem, which Devin Clark turned into a wonderful video for all to enjoy. After the presentation, our students took their grandparents on a tour of their classrooms and building. On the way out of the building they had the opportunity to get a picture taken in the photo booth. Our students were really excited to have had this experience. THANK YOU grandparents for making this such a special day!!

FIRE SAFETY DAY AT LAKOTAStudents in Pre-School through fourth grade observed Fire Safety week

October 11th-14th. Tips were given on fire safety during the morning announcements, students participated in a fire drill, and teachers planned activities such as art work and reading books about fire safety.

On Thursday October 13th, the Kansas Fire Department and the Bet-tsville Fire Department came to Lakota. The firemen shared tips on how to be safe, what to do if there was a fire, showed their trucks and explained what they had to wear to protect themselves from a fire. For the first time, the students went through a “Smoke House” to practice how to get out in case of a fire in their home. We would like to thank the Ballville Fire Department for allowing us to use this house to teach our students.

We especially would like to thank Mr. Jim Reinhart, Mr. Bob Dible, Mr. Brandon Thomas, Christina Lewis and Jeremiah McDonald from Kansas Fire Department and Dave Smalley, Bobbi Smalley and C.J. Smalley from Bettsville Fire Department who volunteered to spend the day with our students and teach them about fire safety.

Mrs. Draeger assists Logan Thomas with Fire personnel equipment.

Kindergartener Bradley Boze (Mrs. Ochs Class) tries

on a Fire Safety Helmet.

Students learn what to do if there is a fire in their home. Mr. Reinhart takes them through the steps of fire safety.

LAKOTA’S GOT TALENT!

LAKOTA PTO NEWSThank you to all of those whom picked up

your fundraiser items. We raised a little over $12,000! This is by far our biggest fundraiser in the last three years. We GREATLY AP-PRECIATE all of your support. We can’t wait to get new playground equipment so things aren’t so crowded. We had our Santa Shop this week and had a great response. We absolutely love seeing the student’s faces when they buy things for their family. The students even got some little gifts from PTO. We also had our fundraiser limo party for those students who sold 18 items. We had a stretch Hummer and the kids absolutely LOVED it. The kids also had a pizza party. Don’t forget you can still order 31 items. You can go to the school website and click on the link from there to order!

Just a reminder; our meetings are every 3rd Monday of the month unless it falls on a holiday, then it is the 3rd Tuesday of that month. Keep your eyes on the lookout for upcoming events. The father/daughter dance will be here before we know it. Again, thanks for all of your support!

GIVE KIDS A SMILE DAYSubmitted by Mrs. Beth Crawford, School Nurse

Oral health is important for overall health and dental disease is preventable. Tooth decay is nothing to smile about. It hurts. Many children who have tooth decay have difficulty eating, sleeping, or paying attention in school. February 3, 2017 is National Give Kids a Smile Day. It’s part of the American Dental As-sociation’s Action for Dental Health campaign. Dentists across the country will provide free dental health services to qualifying children 18 and under. The Dental Center of Northwest Ohio in Findlay will be participating in this event. To register your child for Give Kids a Smile, see the information on the Lakota website or contact Mrs. Crawford at 419-986-6640 before January 23, 2017. Together, we can give kids a smile!

CONCERT ETIQUETTEAs concert season is upon us, the music

teachers here at Lakota will be teaching the students about Concert Etiquette. We would also like to help you, the audience, understand the do’s and don’ts of Concert Etiquette. What Is Good Concert Etiquette?

It is the behavior that is considered appropri-ate and polite while enjoying or performing a live musical performance. Good concert etiquette shows respect for the conductor, performers, other audience members, and the music that is being performed. What Should I Do As An Audience Member?

1. Sit quietly and wait for the concert to begin. You may talk softly while you are waiting. Do not talk or make noises during the performance. It can be very distracting to the performers.

2. Applaud after each full piece of music has been completed.

3. Sit quietly during the performance. When a performing organization presents a concert, they are putting forth their best effort; and they should expect the same from those in the audience.

4. Keep concert programs quiet during the performance.

5. If you must get up to leave during a concert, do so only at the end of a groups’ performance or between pieces. It is best if you stay for the entire concert.

6. Cell phones should be turned off or to mute. Watches set to beep on the hour should also be turned off. These high-pitched beeps are distracting to everyone. Listening to ipods or playing games during the performance is impolite to the performers.

7. Please use discretion in taking photos. Flash photos during a performance are ex-tremely distracting for all.

8. Parents should keep small children seated with them and not allow them to move around during the concert.  If very young children become restless and disrupt others ability to listen, please take them from the performance area until they are quiet.

Recently, Lakota Show Choirs and Lakota Music Boosters sponsored a fundraiser dinner event called “Lakota’s Got Talent”. Students, grades K-12, were welcome to audition to be a part of a talent show to display any entertaining talent they pos-sessed. Many students chose to do some-thing musical. However, we had several very talented dance acts! Our three judges were our own Mr. Aaron Brown (a high school math teacher), Mrs. Emily Abbott (a 2012 Lakota grad and music educator), and Mr. David Lester (local musician extraordinaire and Terra Community College adjunct fac-ulty). Two food trucks provided food with made-to-order entrees. In between the age divisions, the Lakota Show Choirs provided additional entertainment choreographed by the amazing Amy Conrad.

If you get a chance, congratulate the fol-lowing students on being amazingly brave to display their talents in solo and duo acts:

First Division: Jett Koppus (1st), Zoe Johnson (2nd), Grace Waltermier (3rd), and Marissa Collins with Caidence Iler

Second Division: Zoie Lamb (1st), Brooke Trumpler (2nd), Trinity Koppus (3rd - tie), Lindsey Siever (3rd - tie), Tessa Burkett, Xavier Dee, James Mooney, Sa-mantha Rhoads, and Sophie Slover

Third Division: Kelsey Johnson (1st), Morgan Johnson (2nd), Berenice Gonzalez with Samantha Rickard (3rd - tie), Erica Hartley (3rd - tie), Alana Gracia, and Erin Hartley with Trinity Morelock

People’s Choice Voting: Erin Hartley and Trinity Morelock

Thank you to everyone who came out to donate time and materials to the event! A MASSIVE thank you to everyone who came to support students involved in La-kota’s Got Talent! For the first year of the event, Lakota Show Choirs had an amazing turn-out and we can’t thank you all enough for your support, kindness, generosity, and most of all, PATIENCE! We learned a lot from our debut year and we already have major plans to make next year’s event even better. We hope to see you all next year so you can experience our event as it grows and matures.
