“God as Comforter, Today and Throughout the Ages.”
The message of God’s comfort is continued this week through the anticipation of the coming of Jesus. Jesus is a descendant of the patriarchs and prophets of the past, the bearers of God’s covenants. While connected to the covenants of the past, in Jesus a new covenant of God’s love is made. In the Gospel today, John the Baptist is announcing the coming of Jesus and this new covenant and asking us to prepare ourselves and the world around us. Even before the birth of Jesus, John the Baptist was preparing the people for Jesus’ arrival, and in our baptistery you can find this painting of John the Baptist baptizing Jesus with water in preparation for his ministry of bringing God’s love to the world. “I am baptizing you with water…He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” How are you preparing your heart and life for receiving Jesus and the fullness of God’s love?

Docent Corner On December 2nd, 1793, the Carmel Mission was visited by famous English explorer George Vancouver. He was an officer of the Royal Navy, best known
for his exploration of North America, including the Pacific coast along present-day Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia. He learned surveying and cartographic skills
when he sailed with Captain Cook and was put in command of a British expedition of the Pacific northwest. Vancouver followed the coasts of what is now Washington and Oregon northward. In October 1792, he explored the Columbia River, Vancouver Island and the mainland. He intended to explore every bay and outlet in this region, and many times had to use boats, as the inlets were often too narrow for his ships. He then set sail for Spanish California arriving in November of 1792. In command of the sloop-of-war Discovery, he sailed into the port of San Francisco. Ensign Hermenegildo Sal (the future Commandante of the Monterey Presidio and who is buried in the front of the Mission church) entertained Vancouver with greatest hospitality. Vancouver was so appreciative of the courtesy shown him that he named the point below San Luis Obispo “Point Sal” in honor of his host. Vancouver sailed on to Monterey in 1793. He visited the Carmel Mission and dined in the Mission dining room. A sketch of the mission at this time, made by an artist on the expedition, can be found in the Convento Museum. The original Mission organ was a reed organ given to Fr. Lasuén by Vancouver in 1792. It was sold many years later by Fr. Casanova when it was no longer serviceable. Afterwards the Monterey visit, Vancouver spent the winter in further exploration of the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii) and circumnavigated the globe. Vancouver faced a disciplinary inquiry when he returned to England because of an action he had taken against a junior officer who happened to be well connected politically. His career was effectively at an end. One of Britain's greatest navigators, Vancouver died in obscurity. His modest grave lies in St. Peter’s churchyard, Petersham. This insight into the Mission history was provided by the Carmel Mission Docent Association

Carmel Mission’s Junipero Serra School
The Friendship of Junipero Serra School Students is Shared Around the World
A project of JSS 6th students is to prepare Christmas Boxes that contain items that will bring joy and hope to a young child living in poverty. Each student selects items following prayer and discernment — “contemplatives in action.” The students then collect the items such as crayons, toothbrushes, pencils, socks, hard candy, toys, mittens, and the like, that will fill a shoebox. Each box will include a handwritten note, composed by the JSS student, which shares a message of friendship, hope, and love.

Our Lady of Guadalupe — Feast Day December 12th
In 1531 a "Lady from Heaven" appeared to a humble Native American at Tepeyac, a hill northwest of what is now Mexico City. She identified herself as the ever virgin Holy Mary, Mother of the True God for whom we live, of the Creator of all things, Lord of heaven and the earth. She made a request for a church to be built on the site, and submitted her wish to the local Bishop. When the Bishop hesitated, and requested her for a sign, the Mother of God obeyed without delay or question to the Church's local Bishop, and sent her native messenger to the top of the hill in mid-December to gather an assortment of roses for the Bishop. After complying to the Bishop's request for a sign, She also left for us an image of herself imprinted miraculously on the native's tilma, a poor quality cactus-cloth, which should have deteriorated in 20 years but shows no sign of decay 483 years later and still defies all explanations of its origin. Tilma, 3 sizes available
