We have started our second middle school Book Club. The first book, Deadly, was outstanding! A dozen students, a parent, and one other staff member read the book. The second book for the Middle School Book Club is Fable Haven by Brandon Mull. Ms. Andres is really excited about this book. Ms. Andres says that she likes winter. She enjoys watching the snow fall from her front window while drinking hot cocoa or tea. She also loves making snow blocks to hide behind when she has a snowball fight! In her family, this event is taken so seriously you have to build a solid wall to be behind. The one thing she doesn’t like about winter is the slick roads. Ms. Andres loves to get together with family and friends during the holiday season. She has a big family and they all love to get together and have lots of food. One of her favorite holiday foods to make and eat is fudge. As a Desmet family we ate a wonderful home cooked meal served to us by the 8th grade class. The tables were decorated by numerous classrooms. She says it was an awesome time to gather together and enjoy time together. Also, she and her family officially moved into their new house on Thanksgiving making it the best Thanksgiving ever! Ms. Andres made a huge traditional meal and over twenty people gathered around several tables to visit and eat. We are upgrading the computer lab over Winter Break. We are getting new towers, mice and keyboards. Ms. Andres is so excited to see how the lab looks and enjoy the “faster” computers in the lab.

Helpful Healthy Hints (Carried on by your new Health Aide: Miss Jules) Dear DeSmet Families,

First and foremost, hello one and all! As most of you know Miss Millie resigned about a month ago and I joined the DeSmet community. I am thrilled to be here spending my day with your children and presented with the opportunity to further my learning and growth as a health provider. On to December’s Helpful Healthy Hints! Icy Cold: It is frigidly cold outside, even for Montana! We don’t want any frozen students so, please make sure your kiddos have the appropriate gear for waiting for the bus, playing at recess, or romping around in the snow. Please let me know if you need any piece of gear and I will do my best to get it to your family. p.s. Speaking of being icy cold, Frozen, the new Disney movie is great! Liquid Ice-Water, water, water: According to the Mayo Clinic the principle chemical component in our bodies is water, making up about 60 % of our body weight (1).Water affects every system including our largest organ: our skin. With winter comes dry air and dry air creates dryness and itchiness. I’ve had many students come in for chap stick and lotion the last few weeks (which they are more than welcome to!) but hydration is key to battling cracked lips and dry skin. Please be sure to encourage drinking water and not sugary beverages. The recommended daily amount of fluids is:

    • 5 glasses (1 litre) for 5 to 8 year olds • 7 glasses (1.5 litres) for 9 to12 year olds • 8 to10 glasses (2 litres) for 13+ years (2)

Please keep in mind that because it is sooooo dry in the winter we may need even more water per day. Also, carrying a water bottle helps us to remember to drink water while reducing plastic waste! Thank you and I look forward to a wonderful year full of adventure! Wishing you and your family a happy, safe, and beautiful Holiday season. Be well and healthy, Miss Jules [email protected] 1.) http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/water/NU00283 2.) http://www.healthykids.nsw.gov.au/kids-teens/choose-water-as-a-drink-kids.aspx

She has been skiing for many years and looks forward to going as often as she can. She loves teaching math for the junior high students. She really enjoys seeing students catch on to a new math concept. In her opinion junior high students are the BEST!!! Though the month is very short Mrs. Gardner is trying to get every ones work in to start off the new year with a clean slate. The students in my reading groups are working hard to become fluent readers: reading accurately, quickly, and with expression. The third graders are learning how to use the I-pads to help with their fluency practice. My fourth grade math students are practicing multiplication facts to prepare for the 5th grade challenge. They are also learning how to multiply 2-3 digit numbers. I’m so proud of all my students. The come to my class everyday ready to work, be team players, and have fun.

For P.E./health I asked a few questions about the activities we will be doing for December ad what kind of activities Ms. Anderson will be doing over Christmas break. She said that in December we will start with basketball and finish with another round of fitness tests. For Christmas break she will be staying in Missoula and hanging out with her family and hopefully getting a ton of skiing in! I also asked her if she likes being a P.E. and health teacher she replied with yes! I love being a P.E./health teacher! It’s a perfect job for me. It’s the best job ever!!
