Not-So-Grand Grandparentsby Audge Podge

When Charlie arrived at his grandparents’ house, it had its usual smell of mothballs and wet dog.Grandma Helga greeted Charlie with a mean look on her face. Grandpa Fritz said, "Heya, Charlie!"as he smoked his pipe. Their red-haired mutt, Rusty, growled and barked at Charlie for hours afterhe got there. Some welcome! At least I am only staying for the weekend, thought Chadie.

On Saturday, Grandma made Chadie hang wet clothes on a clothesline that he could barely

reach. Even worse, he had to hang her funny undep, vear that is supposed to suck in fat. Then, shemade him shell peas for dinner until his thumb ached. When his chores were done, he picked up oneof her many figurines throughout the house, and Grandma shouted, "Stop being nosey. Then, shesent him outside because she claimed that she needed some peace and quiet. Charlie thought thiswas odd because he had not spoken much during his stay.

On Sunday, Charlie managed to escape chores. Although friendlier than Grandma, Grandpa Fritzwas equally weird. He told Charlie jokes that were lame and kept referring 1o Charlie’s best friend,Samantha, as his girlfriend. Worst of all, Grandpa liked to pull out his false teeth to t~y to makeCharlie laugh. To be nice, Charlie laughed a fake laugh.

Unfortunately, Rusty never warmed up to Charlie. However, after a few days, the dog wascontent to use Chadie’s shoes as chew toys rather than growl at him.

When Charlie’s morn picked him up on Sunday night, he had never been so happy in his life.During the ride home, he asked, "Morn, how did you turn out to be so normal?"

Not-So-Grand Grandparents, by Audge Podge

When Charlie arrived at his grandparents’ house, it had its usual smell of mothballs and wet dog.Grandma Helga greeted Charlie with a mean look on her face. Grandpa Fritz said, "Heya, CharlieFas he smoked his pipe. Their red-haired mutt, Rusty, growled and barked at Charlie for hours afterhe got there. Some welcome! At least I am only staying for the weekend, thought Charlie.

On Saturday, Grandma made Charlie hang wet clothes on a clothesline that he could barelyreach. Even worse, he had to hang her funny underwear that is supposed to suck in fat. Then, shemade him shell peas for dinner until his thumb ached. When his chores were done, he picked up oneof her many figurines throughout the house, and Grandma shouted, "Stop being nosey!" Then, shesent him outside because she claimed that she needed some peace and quiet. Charlie thought thiswas odd because he had not spoken much during his stay.

On Sunday, Charlie managed to escape chores. Although friendlier than Grandma, Grandpa Fritzwas equally weird. He told Charlie jokes that were lame and kept referring to Charlie’s best friend,Samantha, as his girlfriend. Worst of all, Grandpa liked to pull out his false teeth to try to makeCharlie laugh. To be nice, Charlie laughed a fake laugh.

Unfortunately, Rusty never warmed up to Charlie. However, after a few days, the dog wascontent to use Charlie’s shoes as chew toys rather than growl at him.

Water- o-l oundThis model illustrates the water cycle.

SCIENCE CONCEPTS & OBJECTIVES®> Infer how the water cycle works~> Understand the difference between

evaporation and condensation

VOCABULARYcondensation the process by which water vapor

(a gas) changes to liquid water

evaporation the process by which liquid waterchanges to water vapor (a gas)

water cycle the cycle of evaporation, condensa-tion, pre~ip!tati0n, and runoff that determineswater movement between the land, oceans, and atmosphere

l or Your ]InformationWater covers most of Earth’s surface and alsohelps shape the land. The water that flows inrivers carves out canyons and V-shapedvalleys. As glacier ice, water scrapes andscours mountains. Water also carries tons ofsediment to the sea, where sedimentary rockswill form future land. Water is part of everykind of plant and animal and makes life onour planet possible.

When water warms and evaporates, itenters the air as water vapor, a gas. Whenwater vapor cools and condenses, it turns intotiny droplets that form clouds. The waterdroplets in clouds then fall as raindrops uponfurther cooling. All the ways water movesfrom the ocean, to the air, to the land, andback again make up the water cycle.

Water-go-l ound1. Ask students: Where is most of the water

on Earth? (In the ocean; it holds 97 percent ofEarth’s water.) Why doesn’t the supply ofwater run out? (Earth’s water supplyreplenishes itself through the water cycle.)

2. Invite students to make and color themodel (see page 82).

3. Challenge students to flip their books fromback to front and figure out the path ofwater as it moves in a cycle from theocean, to the air, to the land, and back tothe ocean. Ask students what they think ishappening to the water in the ocean at the

MATERIALS: reproducible page 84 O crayons, colored pencils, or markers

1. Photocopy page 84. TIP: To make asturdier book, first paste the page toanother sheet of paper and let it dry.

2.Color the 16 pictures, if desired.

3. Cut out the 16 pictures along the solidblack lines.

5. Line up the book’s pages so the edges atthe right-hand side are as even as possible. Then staple on the left-hand side, asshown.

4. Stack the pictures in order with number 1on top and number 16 on the bottom.

start of the flip book. (Heat from the suncauses the water to evaporate and enter theair as a gas, called water vapor.)

4. Then ask: What forms at the top of thearrows? (a cloud) Why? (As water vaporcools, it changes from a gas to tiny drops ofwater that form clouds. This process is calledcondensation.)

5. Where does the cloud move in the flipbook? (over the land) What happens there?(As they cool further, the droplets in the cloudget larger and larger until they fall as rain.)

6. What happens to the water that falls asrain? (It runs off the land into streams thatjoin with the rivers that carry the water back tothe ocean.)

7.What happens to the water in the ocean?(Some of it evaporates into the air.) Have stu-dents flip their books again and again toemphasize that the water cycle never ends.

8.Challenge students to identify where elsewater evaporates from besides the ocean.(lakes, rivers, trees) Then invite them to cre-ate their own flip books that illustrate thewater cycle.

Water C cllerStudents create and observe a mini-watercycle.

MATERIALS: clear plastic box with a clear lidO small bowl O water ~ lamp ~ ice cubes @plastic bag that zips closed

1. Set the bowl in the box at one end. Fill itwith water. This is your "ocean." Close thelid.

Page 48: PacKet - PGCPS · iVieasurement: Capacity in the IVietric System Part I: Would you choose milliliters or liters to measure the following? A milliliter (mL) is a metric unit which

2. Position the lamp a few inches over thebox’s lid, directly over the bowl of water. The lamp is the "sun."

3.Turn the "sun" on and let it shine over the"ocean" for two hours. After two hours, ask:What happened? (Water in the bowlevaporated.) Where is the water? fit’s in theair inside of the box in the form of water vapor, and some condensed into drops inside the lid.)

Student groups investigate their local sourceof water and present ideas for conservingwater.

Explain to students that although water coversmore than 70 percent of Earth’s surface, only1 percent is fit for consumption. (Ninety-sevenpercent is salt water and the other 2 percent isfresh water trapped in glacier ice.) Over half ofthat 1 percent is inaccessible, far beneathEarth’s surface. Although the amount of wateron Earth always remains the same, a growingpopulation has increased demands on theavailable water supply. In addition, pollutionhas made several water sources unusable.

Have the class find out where their freshwater comes from and how much of a supplyis stored (a week’s worth, a m0nth’~ w0r~hi.When students comprehend the need to use

4.Now put ice cubes in the plastic bag andzip it closed. Set the bag of ice on top of thelid at the opposite end of the box from thelamp. Leave the lamp on and wait anothertwo hours. Ask: What happened? (It rained.)Why? (The ice cooled the temperature insidethe box, and the water vapor condensed intodroplets that fell as rain.)

water wisely, challenge groups to come upwith ideas to promote water conservation. They can present their ideas as advertisingcampaigns. Invite them to create an ad posteror write and act out a TV or radio ad.
