Packet 4 Instructions: *Worksheets to be completed: May 4th - May 15th*

Like the study-guides we have provided all year, I am including one in this packet to review for the rest of

the year. Please review these skills as well as the skills on the phonemic awareness sheet I included in

packet 3 (attaching again).

For the worksheets, I am including new CKLA skills as well as new math skills. Directions are provided in this packet to assist with teaching new skills to your child. *Complete the worksheets by following the dates at

the top of each page.*

Please reach out with questions!

Daily Phonemic Awareness (5-10 mins): Sound Segmenting

Change the CVC words daily for more practice. (2 or 3 sound words)

Adult says: “I am going to say a word, please tell me the sounds you

hear in this word”

Student response: students says each sound and holds up one finger per

sound

go /g/ /o/ shut /sh/ /u/ /t/ pen /p/ /e/ /n/ wax /w/ /a/ /x/ hit /h/ /i/ /t/

Sound Blending

Change the CVC words daily for more practice. (2 or 3 sound words)

Adult says: “I am going to tell you 3 sounds, blend the sounds and tell me the word”

Student response: student says the word

/th /i/ /s/ this /c/ /a/ /sh/ cash /g/ /u/ /m/ gum

/t/ /oo/ to /w/ /e/ /t/ wet

Rhyming: Switch in different words daily for more practice

Adult says: “tell me a word that rhymes with ______”

Student response: a word that rhymes with the word in the left column

snake Possible answers: shake, bake, rake ball Possible answers: hall, mall, call mop Possible answers: hop, pop, cop

Identifying Beginning Sounds: Switch in different words daily for more practice

Adult says: “I am going to say a word, tell me what sound you hear in the beginning”

Student response: the beginning/initial sound

bedroom /b/ yellow /y/ queen /qu/ jacket /j/

Syllable Practice Switch in different words daily for more practice. (words with 1-3 syllables)

Adult says: “clap the syllables in the word _________”

Student response: claps the amount of syllables and states the number

crab 1 hamburger 3 baseball 2

CKLA: Teaching Double letter spellings:

bb dd ff gg cc ck ll mm nn pp rr ss tt zz

The next topic in CKLA covers double letter spellings. When introducing these to your student, first show one sound and

review it with them, then add the double letter and show them that it makes the same sound just with two letters.

Example: adult writes “b”, ask student, what sound is this? Then write another “b” so it shows “bb”. This is the same sound as /b/.

• Mention to the student that MOST of the time, you will see double letter spellings at the end of words, sometimes in the middle. Sound out examples together and underline

the double letter sounds in the words.

Examples: adult writes fuzz on the board and underlines zz adult writes hiccup on the board and underlines cc.

• Student then says the sounds, blends, and reads the word

• Complete several examples with words before completing worksheets

Math: Teaching Decomposing Numbers What it means: to break down numbers into parts

Tools to use: pictures/visuals, drawing circles, ten frames connecting cubes

Why is it important? Decomposing numbers allows your student to see the groupings, patterns, and relationships in numbers. This is laying the foundation for future problem solving with larger numbers. It gives students a visual for what these

numbers look like.

Students will need to understand:

1. To show how numbers 1-10 can be created using two parts.

Example: 6 = 2 + 4 or 2 + 4 = 6

2 4

2. Teen numbers 11-19 each have a group of 10 and then some 1’s.

Example: 17 =10+7 or 10+7= 17

O O O O O

O O O O O

**Important: Make sure to review the term decomposing with student multiple times daily when completing math work.

Page 8: Packet 4 Instructions · Packet 4 Instructions: *Worksheets to be completed: May 4th - May 15th* Like the study-guides we have provided all year, I am including one in this packet

Example: “What is decomposing, to break a number into parts”. They should understand what the term means.

*Review the tool/method you are using to decompose a number. Example: “What are we using to decompose 17, ten frames.”

“How are we going to decompose the number 6, circle the two parts.”

*If you have a dry erase board/marker in your house, completing practice problems together would be a great way to

practice problems before beginning the worksheets.

Watch this video to help you get started teaching decomposing numbers: (watch it daily)
