ADVANTAGES OF PACKAGE SUBSTATION
o AIM
To Explain the Advantages and Disadvantages of proposed Package substation for G58 WTG in Place of Conventional outdoor DP Yard.
o Reliability: IEC 62271-202 Complaint Substations• That mean resistance to the Temperature Rise, Humidity, Pollution, etc.• Equipment Life Span• Service Continuity• Public and Operator Safety
WHY PREFABRICATED SUBSTATIONS?
o Quality and Standardization • Definition of LV/MV substation design including the right components solution
to fit to the standards• Since factory assembled and tested, Product will fit to the needs of quality and
standards• Control of Quality shall be maintained at all levels.

GENERAL ARRANGEMENT
GENERAL ADVANTAGES
o Compact and Safety superior.o Aesthetically superior.o Fully compartmentalized no accidental access to the live parts.o Transportable and Ready to install.o Minimal Maintenanceo EB metering, The CT & PT can be housed in a separate cubicle with tamper proof
sealing arrangement
PACKAGE SUBSTATION CONVENTIONAL SYSTEM
Conventional System Package Substation
LIGHTINING ARRESTOR
Conventional System
Conventional System
• Made up of porcelain
• Heavy and it is hard to handling
• Could have hidden defects that are hard to detect
• Vandalism is common
• Pin erosion and coupling hardware corrosion
• Cement growth cracking
• Weaker in tension
Package Substation
Package Substation
• Lighter in weight almost 90% of weigh is reduced
• Easy handling
• Better performance in high contamination area
• Better handling of shock loads
• more resistant to vandalism
• Stronger in tension
LIGHTINING ARRESTOR
PROTECTION IN CONVENTIONAL SYSTEMS
AB SWITCH / ISOLATOR
• Since the Fabrication is done is site, the alignment won't be that precise
• Number of accessories are involved so it is hard to have a spares
• Work at height is involved
• Closing and Opening are mostly depends on the Operator physical strength
PROTECTION IN CONVENTIONAL SYSTEMS
HORN GAP FUSE
•The reaction time to blown the fuse during the fault is relatively slow when compared to VCB
•Once the fuse is blown it is hard to detect
•At the time of replacing the blown fuse, work at height is involved, so extra safety measures to be taken
PROTECTION IN PACKAGE SUBSTATION
MV SWITCH GEAR
•Hence it is a factory made there will not be any alignment problem
•Self powered relay are used to trip the circuit
•In case of fault the fault circuit is isolated by tripping VCB rapidly
•MV switch gear has a disconnector switch which can be connected to earth at the time of service
•Since it is a factory made the standard quality of the materials can be obtained
•Maintaing inventory is quite easy
BUS ARRANGEMENT -ACSR CONDUCTOR
• Since there is more no of terminals and joints the voltage drop is high
• Hence it is exposed to atmospheric condition easily contaminated by rust
• Having risk of working at height
• Having risk of external faults
• Possible of having accidental access to the live parts
BUS BAR ARRANGEMENT IN CONVENTIONAL SYSTEM
BUS BAR ARRANGEMENT IN PACKAGE SUBSTATION
BUS BAR ARRANGEMENT - PACKAGE SUBSTATION
•Electrical connections are done by the cable and the Aluminium bus, so voltage drop is minimized
•Hence it is in a cubicle the atmospheric condition may not affect
•External faults wont take place
•Accidental access to the live parts are avoided
•Personnel safety is assured
MEASURING CTPT- CONVENTIONAL SYSTEM
MEASURING CTPT- CONVENTIONAL SYSTEM
•Since it is a oil type, there is a chance of oil leakage
•Possible of danger of fire and explosion
•Possible of External Fault (Ex. Bird Fault)
MEASURING CTPT- PACKAGE SUBSTATION
MEASURING CTPT- PACKAGE SUBSTATION
• It’s a dry type transformer, the life time of the CTPT is longer
• Provides Excellent mechanical and short ciruit strength
• Less Weight and easy to handle
• No danger of fire explosion
COMPARISON BETWEEN PACKAGE SUBSTATION AND CONVENTIONAL SYSTEM
DESCRIPTION PACKAGE SUBSTATION CONVENTIONAL OUTDOOR DP YARD1 Erection time < 2 hours 7 to 15 days
2 Quality of the materials All materials are of reputed make
As the contractor is buying most of the materials, very difficult to control quality and also more no of accessories and hardwares are involved
3 WorkmenshipSince it is factory made cubicle with skilled labours, workmenship will be good
Since all are fabricated at site, no. of days, no. of labours and fabrication tools involved are more and hence workmenship will not be as good as P SS
4 P ersonnel Safety at siteP ersonnel safety will be good as there is no fabrication and working at height risks are involved Fabrication and working at height is involved
5Exposure to external lighting, bird faults and dusty, humid and moisturous enivorment No exposure as it is metal enclosed High exposure
6 Equipment interconnectionwill be good as it involves cables and alumnium bus bars with proper termination
will be poor, since done with "0" gauge copper with locally purchased lugs and connectors
7 Maintenance and operation simple difficult8 P ending points almost zero as it is prefabricated more - as all activities are at site9 Space requirement less (4 mtrs X 3.5 mtrs) high (12 mtrs X 9 mtrs)
10 Tresspassing difficult as it is metal enclosed easy as only fencing is available
11 Civil works involved very less (only four pillars after P CC)involves concreting for all the poles, transformer, metering box, fencing, gate and floor concreting / metal spreading
12 Additional civil works for low lying area very less (only pillar height with additional reinforcement )
Additional retaining wall with increased height to match ground level and backfilling the same with soil for whole yard area
13 High temperature, high humid and high dust areaFor coastal area - only anti corrosion painting to be done. No modification in equipment specifications
In addition to GI structures, equipments with higher creepage to be installed
14 Equipment earthing systemwill be good as prefabricated and done with skilled labours
more no. of joints and poor welding is possible, since done at site with unskilled labours
15 Storage at site Needs more space on contractors scope
16Cost of Transportation High ( involves transportation from factory to site yard,
yard to location) Contractors scope
17Crane requirement Crane is required for unloading and loading at yard and
erection at locationonly hydra for transformer unloading and loading at yard and erection at location
