1. What is Lidocaine and what is used for Lidocaine is a medication that belongs to a class of medicines called “anesthetics”. It acts by numbing the pain and is used for the relief of post-herpetic neuralgia pain. Post-herpetic neuralgia is one of the most common complications of shingles (a viral infection due to herpes zoster virus also known as “chickenpox” that causes a painful rash anywhere on your body but most commonly on one side of your torso), it affects the skin and nerve fibers leading to burning pain that remains even after the blisters and rash caused by shingles have faded. It should be applied only on undamaged skin. 2. What you need to know before you use Lidocaine Do not use Lidocaine

If you are allergic to Lidocaine or any of the ingredients in this medicine. Tell your doctor about the allergy and what signs you had.

If you have a history of allergic reactions to other anesthetics of the amide type. Warnings and Precautions

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you develop allergic reactions such as shortness of breath, skin rash, swelling of the face or neck, decreased blood pressure and dizziness.

Lidocaine patch contains a significant amount of anesthetic that can cause serious harm if chewed or ingested by a pet or a kid. Make sure to keep the patches away from children and pets.

Do not apply more than 3 patches once a day and do not keep the patch on your skin for longer than 12 hours.

Avoid applying the patch on inflamed or broken skin to prevent excessive absorption of the anesthetic and toxicity.

Patients with liver impairment may be unable to metabolize the medication properly. Therefore, make sure to tell your doctor about any liver problems that you have before using this patch.

Keep the medication away from your eyes to avoid serious eye irritation. If eye contact happens, you should immediately wash your eyes with saline or water and then keep your eye protected until sensation goes back to normal again.

Other medicines and Lidocaine

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medications.

If you are taking class I antiarrhythmic medications such as mexiletine and tocainide (used for

irregular heart rhythms).

If you are using other local anesthetics.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant, plan on getting pregnant, or are breastfeeding. Make sure to discuss risks and benefits that the medication can impose on you and the baby. It should only be used when clearly needed.

Driving and using machines Lidocaine may cause side effects that can impact your ability to drive safely or use other machines. Make sure not to drive or use any machines if your treated area still feels numb.

3. How to use Lidocaine

It is generally recommended to apply a maximum of 3 patches once daily for a maximum of 12 hours within a 24 hour period.

You may cut the patches with scissors into smaller parts before removing the release liner.

If you suffer from weakness or have liver problems, it is preferable to apply the medication on smaller areas of your skin

Treated skin area can be covered with clothing.

If you experience a burning sensation or irritation upon applying the patch, make sure to remove it and do not apply the medication again until the irritation fades away.

Wash your hands immediately after applying the patch to avoid absorption of the medication into this area.

Discard used patches immediately after their removal.

If you apply more Lidocaine than you should

It was shown that lidocaine overdose is uncommon. However, make sure to contact your doctor in case of suspected overdose. An overdose can lead to side effects like headache, drowsiness, low blood pressure, numbness, tremors, twitching, confusion, nervousness, ringing in the ears, double vision, blurred vision, vomiting and convulsions.

If you forget to apply Lidocaine Lidocaine patch is used on an as needed basis for pain. Make sure not to use more than 3 patches within 24 hours. If you stop applying Lidocaine Lidocaine patch is applied on an as needed basis for pain. You can stop applying the patch once the pain subsides.

4. Possible side effects of Lidocaine

Although it may be rare, some patients may experience undesirable side effects when taking a medication. Tell your doctor or get medical help right away if you have any of the following signs or symptoms:

Signs of an allergic reaction, like rash; hives; itching; red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin with or without fever; wheezing; tightness in the chest or throat; trouble breathing, swallowing, or talking; unusual hoarseness; or swelling of the mouth, face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Systemic signs in case of overdose (rare): nervousness, lightheadedness, confusion, ringing in the ears, euphoria, dizziness, drowsiness, blurred or double vision, heat or cold sensations, vomiting, numbness, difficulty breathing, tremors, twitching, loss of consciousness, convulsions, low blood pressure and low heart rate leading to arrest.

5. How to store Lidocaine

Store at 15 to 30°C

Keep out of the reach of children and pets

Discard used patch immediately after removing it

Do not use beyond the expiry date mentioned on the box

Keep away from light and moisture

Do not dispose in the wastewater or household waste
