This issue of Package Insert deals

with topics that reflect everyday pro-

ject work in our company: the increas-

ing use of server solutions that facili-

tate and speed up the exchange of data

and project files in communication with

our clients. The installation of the mt-g Across Language Server and introduc-

tion of crossGrid is consistent with this

development strategy. On the follow-

ing pages we will illustrate what we at mt-g understand by an efficient work-

flow using our client PAUL HARTMANN

AG as an example.

Despite the wealth of technical

possibilities, at mt-g we still consider

people to be our focal point: our cli-

ents, employees, translators and sup-

pliers. Two topics in particular show

just how important direct contact and

getting to know one another is. Our

team leaders undertake a great deal of

travel – to our clients, as well as to

trade fairs. Ann-Kathrin Roth, team

leader Dentistry & Dental Technology,

reports on her trip to the International

Dental Show in Cologne. And, as in

every issue, we also introduce some of

the members of our team. This time,

we would like to welcome two new

colleagues from France.

Reducing costs, increasing transparency

and streamlining workflows: PAUL

HARTMANN AG and mt-g intensify their

collaboration via crossGrid

mt-g has been assisting PAUL

HARTMANN AG with the translation of

specialised medical texts, particularly

instruction manuals and website con-

tents, for a number of years now. In the

2012/13 financial years, two of the top

priorities at PAUL HARTMANN AG were

the internationalisation of Vivano – a

negative pressure wound therapy sys-

tem – and the relaunch of the Tensoval

Mobile and Tensoval Comfort blood

pressure devices. mt-g contributed to

the successful completion of these

projects, which were undertaken in

different languages, by translating

several of the required product texts.

At the same time, mt-g was also able

to advise PAUL HARTMANN AG on the

introduction of Across and crossGrid.

Thanks to its successful implementa-

tion, all those involved on both sides of

the translation process can now be

integrated seamlessly into an efficient

workflow process.

Measurable advantages

With crossGrid, all those involved

in a project have access at all times to

the latest translations and always work

in the same environment with identical

data. At the same time, the use of

translation memories – translation

units in a standardised database that

can be used repeatedly – ensures the

translation terminology becomes

increasingly consistent. HARTMANN

can manage all the processes itself and

monitor them with the aid of the inte-

grated quality control function. In

addition, those in charge of projects

can inspect, look up and, if required,

adapt the translation contents for all

the languages in-house. 'Across is a

highly complex tool that requires com-

plete commitment on the part of the

user. With its introduction and the link

via crossGrid we expect to be able to

optimise our translation processes. In

the long term, with regard to quality

assurance, we are especially keen to

maintain the uniformity of our termi-

nology. Our aim is to reduce the costs

of translation,' is how the PAUL

HARTMANN AG project team responsi-

ble describes the company's long-term

focus on the use of Across.

Step by step to success

HARTMANN began the process last

year. Before deciding in favour of the

central Across platform, the company

first analysed the prevailing situation.

The main challenges were compatibility

with their in-house IT systems and the

fact that the company was not in

possession of the complete terminology

archives. Once the hardware had been

deployed and the Across Language

Server installed, an initial configuration

was completed in line with HARTMANN's

specific requirements. When the time

came for HARTMANN to decide whether

to adopt the Across Language Server or

a different type of software, it was of

vital importance to those responsible

at HARTMANN that mt-g, as a

translation services provider, was not

only an experienced point of contact

with its own trained IT specialists in

Across, but also owns an Across server.

This meant that, via crossGrid,

immediate collaboration with mt-g was possible.

This involved, first of all, setting the

system preferences at the different

Across levels (administration, user,

workflows, projects) so they would not

only conform with HARTMANN's

requirements in terms of workflows

and aims, but also take into account

the configurations used by mt-g. With

Across it is also possible to manage

ISO-compliant and standardised

projects. At the same time, via in-house

training sessions, all HARTMANN staff

involved in the project received

instruction on how to use the new tool.

In addition, extra webinars were held

for those employees working in foreign

branch offices.

established by exchanging the relevant

certification data. mt-g first conducted

a number of test projects with

HARTMANN, the aim of which was to

carry out any necessary fine tuning on

the systems and ensure that not only

was the connection stable but that

contents could also be transferred with

zero loss. As part of these tests, and

thanks to the constructive cooperation

of those in charge, mt-g specialists

were able to provide comprehensive

support in configuring the Language

Server. The result is a new, optimised

workflow that better fulfils

HARTMANN's requirements and

facilitates collaboration.

'The wide range of possible settings

in Across and their consequences,

some of which are not always

immediately apparent, require a degree

of strategic knowledge in dealing with

CAT tools that exceeds that required

for Across. We are delighted that we

can be involved with such a long-

established firm as HARTMANN on this

innovative project and assist them with

our know-how,' summarises Benjamin

Heinze, mt-g project manager. Now

that Across and crossGrid are up and

running, further extensive analyses are

intended to show whether all

in-company processes are being

successfully mapped. In addition to

discovering further means of process

optimisation, the main focus is set to

be on developing the terminology

database. One of the current aims is,

by networking via crossGrid, to

seamlessly link more partners into the

translation process as soon as possible. mt-g will continue to advise HARTMANN

on this process and help them carry out

any further adjustments that are

required. The HARTMANN project team

praised mt-g's commitment by saying,

'The support of mt-g during the

introduction of Across was an enormous

help.'

About crossGrid

Through the connection of different

Across servers, crossGrid permits the

flexible distribution of projects and

tasks, including to external

organisations. Parent companies,

foreign subsidiaries and branches,

service providers, clients and other

partners can collaborate more

effectively via crossGrid. Data required

to manage projects and specific tasks

is transferred in the form of packages.

The Across servers involved fulfil two

functions within crossGrid: packages

are delegated from one Across server

to another. The Across server

delegating the packages takes the role

of, and is referred to as, the master

server, the Across server to which the

packages are delegated takes the role

of trusted server.

The Across Language Server is the

central platform for all language

resources and translation processes. It

comprises a translation memory sys-

tem and a terminology management

system, as well as tools for project and

workflow management.

In March 2013, the 36th International

Dental Show (IDS) attracted a record

number of more than 125,000 trade visi-

tors from 149 countries. Over 150,000

square metres, 2,058 companies from

56 countries presented the latest from

the world of dentistry. It is also an

important trade date for mt-g. Ann-

Kathrin Roth, team leader Dentistry &

Dental Technology, was there.

Ms Roth, why did you go to the IDS?

The IDS is the world's largest dental

trade fair. And, of course, all our clients

are represented there. It provides us

with the perfect opportunity to get to

know our international contacts per-

sonally. This is why, on 13 & 14 March,

my sales colleague Christian Kämmle

and I were in Cologne.

What was your daily schedule at the

IDS?

I spent most of my time meeting

with clients. The main focus was on

getting to know clients personally. But

we also discussed specific projects and

coordinated workflows. Communication

is an essential part of project manage-

ment. Once we know a client's require-

ments, we can align our service specifi-

cally to his or her needs. This is why it

is so valuable for us to meet and talk to

clients at events like the IDS. I would

like to take this opportunity once again

to sincerely thank our clients for taking

the time to talk to us! We were also

particularly pleased about the great

deal of positive feedback we received.

What were your impressions of the

IDS?

As far as I'm concerned, it was

wonderful to see what happens to our

translations after they have been deliv-

ered. We don't normally see the actual

end product, i.e. the printed text in its

final layout. Preparing for the IDS every

two years is also a real crunch time for

us. It's good to see that we as service

providers have contributed toward an

impressive end product.

What criteria do translators have to

fulfil in this sector?

All our translators have many years

of experience in the fields of dentistry

and dental technology. Some of our

technical translators have a degree in

dentistry, or have completed some

other training in this field. They also

have to be extremely capable research-

ers, as texts are often highly complex

and a 100% understanding of the

source text is a prerequisite for a cor-

rect translation. Apart from that, we

require our translators to have a certain

affinity for translation software,

because in our team almost all our

projects are processed using computer-

aided translation programs, so-called

CAT tools.

What are the particular challenges

faced by the mt-g Dentistry & Dental

Technology team?

Technical and client-specific termi-

nology is particularly important in the

field of dental technology and den-

tistry. This is why we work almost

exclusively with CAT tools. These pro-

grams not only help us ensure that our

clients' texts are translated consist-

ently into the respective languages,

they also guarantee that the correct

translations of particular terms as

specified by the client are always used.

We also have a lot of experience

with DTP projects and cooperate very

closely with graphic designers. We are

also happy to accommodate clients'

special requirements, e.g. if a client

wants a translation done in a particular

program. This is increasingly often the

case especially with website transla-

tions, an area in which we have

designed a number of successful

workflows. Together with our in-house

technical support experts, we always

find efficient solutions for our clients.

Nathalie Fontaine

Project manager in the Dentistry &

Dental Technology team

The 34-year-old Frenchwoman

came to mt-g in search of a new chal-

lenge in January of this year. After

studying technical translation in

German, English and French and gradu-

ating as Maîtrise de Sciences et

Technique Traduction et Documentation

Scientifique, she then worked for a

total of eleven years as a technical

translator – the first five in Germany

and the following six in her home coun-

try France. As a project manager,

Nathalie Fontaine would now like to

intensify her knowledge of another

stage of the translation process. Her

passion for Nordic walking helps her

keep fit.

Delphine Simonin

Project manager in the Medical Devices

& Translation Technology team

Born in Nancy, Delphine Simonin

came to mt-g in Ulm in 2012. As she

says herself, 'to a fair-minded employer

who shares my values.' The 40-year-

old first studied German and French

literature in France before moving to

the German city of Münster at the age

of 20. It was there that she studied

French and Italian. In the German city

of Dortmund she then passed her exam

to become a state-certified translator

in German and French. Following a fur-

ther sojourn in her home country, she

nevertheless then decided to return to

Germany. She often travels to France

for the weekend, in this way combining

the best of both worlds.

In its role as corporate partner, mt-g

has now successfully supported a total

of twelve projects on the social donor

platform betterplace.org. It has now

been possible to cover all the required

costs for each individual project. This

includes the Querdenkerwald (lateral

thinker’s forest) project. The first mt-g

saplings can now be planted in Erkheim

this coming autumn. In future, as tall

trees, they are set to become part of the

planned Querdenker climate protection

forest.

The aim of Kakuro is to fill in the empty fields using the numbers 1 to 9. These numbers can only be used once in each row or column. The sum of each row or column should total that of the clues provided in the grey squares. The grey square containing the clue is divided diagonally into two parts. The number in the top half of the square is the clue for the row, and the number in the bottom half of the square refers to the column.

The aim of Sudoku is to complete the grid so that each row, column or block of 9 squares contains the numbers 1 to 9, which can only be used once in each case.The sum of the numbers already placed in the fields is the clue to the solution.

Fit for translation

Further education and training are inher-

ent aspects of the mt-g corporate phi-

losophy, which now also includes sport-

ing activities. In our very own fitness

room a treadmill, a stepper and a Power

Plate are waiting to be used by the

health-conscious employee. 'Before, we

only had table football. With the mt-g fitness room we would like to encourage

those employees who are not football

fans to be more active during the lunch

break or after work,' explained execu-

tive partner Andreas Bendig.
