PACIFIC GOLF | FALL SEASON

After a disastrous season opening tournament at Firestone the Tigers

bounced back at the Del Walker and then capped a three-week stretch to open the season with a dominating team and individual win at the Bill

Cullum Invitational. With the line-up playing stronger as the season

progresses it begs the question.... is the best yet to come?

5,380 milesIt’s roughly the distance from coast-to-coast. Twice. It’s also the amount of mileage that ju-nior Alex Johnson’s grandfather has put on his car since the Tigers kicked off their season fall season with a trip to famed Firestone Country Club at the beginning of October. But he made the drive to that one from his house in Tucson just to watch his grandson play. He was there last spring when the Tigers won their fi rst tour-nament in six years in Texas at the Rice Inter-collegiate. He was also at Long Beach a week

is a lot of land to cover.

later and of course he continued up the road to Northridge to see the Tigers at Wood Ranch.

It takes a certain passion and desire to log nearly 6,000 miles in less than a month. It takes a lot of pa-tience. That’s a lot of hotel stays, a lot of gas station stops and who knows how many rest stops. Dick’s probably the only guy in Tucson who comes in for his 3,000-mile oil change with more regularity than he takes out the trash. But he knows his grandson is something special and just doesn’t want to miss a moment as he climbs the ranks of college golf and transforms into one of the games best players.

All those weak Denny’s breakfasts’ by the side of of the interstate fi nally paid off this week as he got to see something he’d never seen before. Watch his grandson win his fi rst indiviudal collegiate event. An opening round 66 put Johnson in the drivers seat and a second round 68 was the equivelant of putting his foot on the gas; something which the family has much experience with.

With a fi ve-shot lead heading into the fi nal round Johnson was almost caught by Northridge’s Nick Delio but clutch play on his fi nal three holes pre-served the victory. It was as much of a display of calm under pressure as it was of the passion and work ethic that got him to this place to begin with.Gee... you wonder where he gets it...

came into the 2009-10 season with lofty expectations sim-ply wouldn’t do the word ʻlofty’ justifi ca-tion. With their top-three players not only back but with two years of experi-ence under their belt

To say the Tigers

it was a veritable certainty that the ̒ 10 squad was a much strong team than the ʻ09 version; not to men-tion the previous four years of head coach Brandon Goethals’ program. However, an opening round 310 at Firestone Country Club immediately became a cause for concern as did subsequent rounds of 293 and 303. Without a marquee performance but plenty of shaky ones from any individuals on the roster the coaching staff was left to shake their collective heads and wonder if this team was in fact as good as they had previously thought. The Tigers would squeak out an eighth place fi nish at the Firestone Invitational and Patrick Kucich would net another Top-20 fi nish in a career that is steadily on the upswing but the rest of the Tigers had failed to show teeth in a tournament in which they should have been full of bite.

Thankfully that shaky start would be as much a mirage as anything as the Ti-gers made their an-nual Southern Cali-fornia swing to play in the Del Walker Intercollegiate and Northridge’s Bill Cullum Invitational. And then a funny thing happened on the way past the Fo-

rum. A pair a teammates, and roommates and best friends decided that all that work in the summer was going to pay off.

And pay off it did as sophomore Danny Gar-cia and redshirt freshman Ben Bauch played anything-you-can-do-I-can-do-better throughout the week. When both opened with even-par 70’s it was first Bauch going deep with a three-under 67 in the second round and then Gar-cia tacking on a 68 in the final round. Bauch would get a 13th place en route to etching his name into the Pacific re-cord books with the fifth lowest tourna-ment at 207 while Garcia claimed a 21st place finish at 209.

The Tigers kept themselves in the middle of the pack on Thursday with Johnson’s 68 and as the darkness-shortened second round came to an end the Tigers found themselves right smack in the middle of the 16-team field. The final round would see the Tigers get as high as tenth and as low as sixth at one point but Big West rival UC Irvine would clip Pacific down the stretch to finish sixth and although St. Mary’s fell from the lead midway through the second round they would hold on for seventh place, a shot ahead of Pacific at 1,060. Playing the unique, “play six, count five format”, Bauch and Garcia’s rounds would be joined by Johnson at 211, Bordeaux at 216, Kucich at 218 and Alex Grieb at 227.

“This is a tournament that we always seem to play well in and this time around was no exception but while we did get great performances from our four and five guys we didn’t get the rounds we needed

to out of our one and two guys,”said Goethals. “

If the Ohio-trip was one to forget and the Del Walk-er was one to build off of than the Bill Cullum was without a doubt one to remember. With Johnson’s opening round 66 on the board the Tigers would go nine-red in the opening round, distancing them-selves from host Cal Northridge and rival UC Santa Barbara. A 281 in the afternoon would give the Tigers a 12-shot advantage going into final round play and Johnson, a 5-shot cushion. Again, stellar scores in the final round made sure the team out-come was never in doubt as Garcia shot a 68 and Bordeaux a 69.

In a world of college golf where every shot mat-ters the Tigers played Goethals’ preaching to a T. As a matter of fact, the squad only had to count two-rounds over-par for the entire tournament. And

those, yep, 73’s.

So with the team outcome clearly in the bag it was Johnson going shot-for-shot down the stretch as his competitors jockeyed for position and tried to gain strokes. But with Dick ever-patrolling the cart paths Johnson steadily made clutch shot after clutch shot to stay at least one in the lead throughout the fi-nal round.

From a player that is bursting with phys-ical ability it may have been the cap-stone of all that hard work and desire

to finally get a college win; and go for more. For Goethals and the team is simply a moment to soak up and be proud as one of their own achieved a individual award along with team achievement.

Bet there’s another guy that’s pretty proud too.

In the long standing tradition of Pacific Golf the Ti-gers held their annual fund-raiser, the Tiger Hunt, at Brookside Country Club on October 5th. The

event was sponsored by Nakashima Golf.

The Tiger Hunt brings together alumni, boosters and friends of the program for a day of golf with current Pacific players. It’s a chance for the com-munity and all those influential to the program to interact and meet the players whom they support.

Each team is composed of four boosters and one professional (a former or current Pacific player).

The tournament is the Pacific Golf programs chief fund raiser for the year and allows the Ti-

gers to travel to tournaments, recruit and provide both clothing and equipment to the team.

For more information on the Tiger Hunt, future dates or how to get involved it this event write to head

coach Brandon Goethals at [email protected].

Though the trend is for many top junior players to bypass offi cial visits and commit to colleges before their senior year of high school, here’s a look at a player who took several offi cial (and unoffi cial) visits and say the process helped immensely in making his decision.

Edfort will play for the University of the Pacifi c in the fall because of his ability, of course, but, just as important, because of an unoffi cial – and very unex-pected – visit to the Stockton, Calif., campus.

In September 2007, during his junior year in high school, Edfort and his mother put together a packet that included a resume, swing video and introduc-tion letter. Because Edfort, from Somerset, N.J., was relatively unknown in the junior golf world, the two thought the effort would increase his exposure. It didn’t work.

“You have to keep at it and (not) get discouraged,” Edfort said. “It takes time, but you have to think you’ll fi nally break through.”

That break came when Edfort collected his fi rst AJGA title at the Lessing’s AJGA Classic in July 2008. Schools quickly began showing interest, and Edfort began a series of offi cial and unoffi cial visits. Edfort went on three offi cial visits (Davidson, Lafay-ette and William and Mary) and two unoffi cial (Pacif-ic and Virginia). The school he fi nally picked he only visited because another one didn’t want him.

Edfort had an unoffi cial visit to the University of Cali-

fornia set up while playing at a junior event in Stock-ton but was told by a Cal assistant coach a week be-fore the visit to Berkeley that the Bears already had signed all of their recruits for that class.

By chance, a Pacifi c coach was watching another player in Edfort’s group, and Edfort asked if he could visit the campus. Pacifi c head coach Brandon Goethals took Edfort around the campus for three hours. He also met the team in the cafeteria before practice. The unoffi cial visit made more of an impact than any offi cial visit Edfort went on.

“I liked him right off the bat,” Edfort said of Goethals, who gave him a tour of the school’s practice facility and courses the team used.“What was so impres-sive was that he took three hours, unsolicited. That showed a lot.”

Goethals offered Edfort a scholarship in September, and he committed in October. Edfort said he felt guilty letting down the teams that had spent time – and money – when they hosted him for offi cial visits.

“On offi cials, we spent more time on campus and more time with the golfers; I stayed overnight on all three,” Edfort said. “I felt bad calling the coach up and telling him I wasn’t coming.”

It was not an easy decision, but because of his numerous visits – offi cial and unoffi cial – it was an informed one.

Let’s make one thing crystal clear. You do not go low at Trinitas. You want to shoot in the 60’s? Brookside Country Club, Stockton Country Club, Swen-son... all great choices. Sure you can make birdies and an occasional eagle but putting up anything more than 3-un-der par at Mike Nemee’s little adven-tureland in the Calavares Hills is some-thing rare.

How rare?

Not just taking-down-Tiger-Woods rare but more like doing-it-to-Tiger twice rare, as in it’s never been done before. Sure you can make a few birdies here and there but Trinitas does not let you hold on to too many circles without a few squares pop-ping up. At least it hadn’t...

It’s October. 2007. The Pa-cifi c Golf offi ce. The Tigers have just fi nished qualifying for the Husky In-vitational and one of coach Brandon Goethals’ top recruits is absent from the traveling squad. Alex Johnson sits across the room. Disappointed. Sure. Mad. Prob-ably. Determined. You betcha.

“Coach, I will NOT miss another tournament while I’m at Pacifi c,” says the then-skinny and experience-free freshman. “I will be in EVERY line-up for you.”

Fast-forward two years. Johnson hasn’t missed a single tournament for the Ti-gers in two years since his promise to himself and his team. But now it’s

the fi rst qualifi er of the year for the Tigers; six rounds down, one to go. Ten guys, low fi ve go. No coaches picks or exceptions or captains picks. And it’s the fi nal round and Johnson isn’t just out of the top fi ve he’s struggling to keep his head of water in the ninth position. 13 strokes from mak-ing the cut.

Maybe the only golf on the course that day stub-born enough to not realize that it just wasn’t go-ing to happen for him and he would indeed miss his second trip. Maybe he didn’t realize he would need to gain an unheard of seven strokes while FOUR players in front of him fell back by nearly the same amount.

He got both.

In shattering the course record by more than fi ve shots we’ll fall just short of calling it

Beamonesque or even shades of Nickalaus at the Masters but for one fall afternoon,

for one college golfer this was that im-portant. It was that height of pressure

that simply cannot be duplicated in golf. Needing to go lower than thought possible on a course that

Nemee himself had designed without nary the thought multiple birdies in

mind let alone the possiblity of some-thing like this.

But he did it. He went out and jumped half the team already having played

six rounds and it made it all up in one afternoon. Desire and work-ethic were never something that Johnson had been short on and

by posting a 65 at Trinitas he reaf-fi rmed his goal at becoming a top collegiate player and kept intact that in which he said he would.

Goethals Takes Over Japan-USA Topy Cup

University of the Pacific head coach Brandon Goethals was named the US director of the Topy Cup; Japan-United States Collegiate Golf Championship. The Topy Cup is a collegiate golf tournament played in Japan each September that features four men’s teams and two women’s teams from the United States with a number of teams from Japan. Each year top men’s teams are selected to travel overseas for the week-long tournament and accompany-ing festivities. Pacific last played in the Topy Cup in 2001. As part of Goethals’ representing the United States in the Japanese tournament he traveled alongside former tournament director and current Fresno State coach Mike Watney and the 2009 participat-ing teams, Washington, Michigan

State, Colorado State and Texas; on the women’s side, Arizona State and Wake Forest participated. The 2009 tournament was held at Tanagura Coun-try Club in Tanagura, Japan. “I’m very honored to take over this responsibility and not only represent the University of the Pacific but also the United States and collegiate golf over-seas,” said Goethals. “Japanese golf is definitely on the rise and it was a lot of fun to watch this years’ event.”

Q. The Tigers have played three events this season, the Firestone, Del Walker and Bill Cullum Invitationals. Where do the Tigers stand at this point in the season?BG. I have to say that the beginning of the season was defi nitely a disappointment. You just canʼt start the year off with a poor fi nish because it kills your national ranking out of the gate. I thought we played better at the Del Walker, but we still werenʼt just playing the game. Some of the guys were forcing things and I think it showed in our results. The Cullum was an entirely different story. In my 4+ years here I have not seen a team play that confi dent. I am very proud of how we played as a team. Overall, we are in a little bit of a hole but I think we are moving in the right direction.ou must have someone in the position to leaQ. You had freshman Ben Bauch fi nish in 13th at the Del Walker in his fi rst collegiate event and sophomore Danny Garcia shoot under par for the tournament as well. What is the impact of these underclassmen coming into their own as college players?BG. I know one thing for sure and I donʼt want this to sound arrogant, but Iʼm a good recruiter. I know who has potential. When I bring someone into this program, I truly believe they can con-tribute to this team. It is great to see Ben and Dan work so hard and now see it pay off. They

pushed all their chips in for this program and Iʼm just stoked that they are doing what they are doing. Not to mention, they are both still very young. Q. This is the fourth Pacifi c Invitational your program has hosted. We know the tournament is one of the best in the country but what do the Tigers have to do to have some success at their own event?BG. The Invitational is something I truly cherish. It is not often you get to build something from scratch and see it grow. All of that aside, it is time for our team to step up and defend their home soil. I think in the past we were just young and nervous. This yearʼs team is a lot more experienced and they believe they can now play well at home. The course will be set up differently from what they are used to, but we need to be able to adjust. I also think winning the week prior to the event will help even more. and you must have someone in the position to lea

The ultimate vision for the Pacifi c Golf Program, through The Clubhouse, is to maintain and enhance fundrais-ing opportunies. Our goal is to create different levels of giving that would allow Pacifi c Golf to not only main-tain fi nancial stability but to also grow and continue on the path towards an elite collegiate golf program.

By creating The Clubhouse, our supporters now have the ability and fi nancial freedom to support the program with a one-time yearly gift. Abandoning various promotions for funds throughout the year this will allow the ultimate clubhouse membership to join and support the Tigers in all aspects including the Tiger Hunt, Pacifi c Invitational, Pacifi c Cup and numerous other ventures.

The Clubhouse will also allow Pacifi c Golf to better recognize and track annual giving, thus bringing those members of the Pacifi c Golf family closer to the young men they are supporting.

The foundation for any successful venture begins and ends with planning and vision. The Pacifi c Golf Program, much like the game of golf is no exception. As on the golf course you would use a yardage book to plan and chart you game you will use this yardage book to track and show your involvement in the Pacifi c Golf Program.

Within the normal pages you would be able to mark yardages, pin placements and wind tendencies to complete a successful round. That same vision is applied here as you will be able to choose your level of involvement with the Tigers. The system is designed as one of ease; we want you to have the fl exibility to join the Club-house either all at once, split payments or even quartlery.

While you have the ability to become more involved with this great program and the young men that will shape its future the Pacifi c Golf program likewise will now have the ability to bring you closer within the Family than ever before.

The vision of the program is one of greatness and that begins and ends with the support from players like yourself. Let this yardage book be your guide throughout The Clubhouse and we look forward to you joining someday soon.

How’d this whole thing start? We just randomly got picked to be roommates our freshman year. It’s helped me out, Danny being from Stockton and on the course as well. We know each other’s games so well and we can look out for each other. Yeah, we just sat down and figured out what we needed to do to be a factor on this team. We woke up early every day over the summer and paid a personal trainer that got us in pretty damn good shape. We’d be on the golf course, put in work... play tournament. Plus Ben stayed here this summer. We lived in a garage. A garage? Yeah, the back of my house. Talk about your similarities. Well we both like doing the same thing. Yeah. We both like to have a good time. Yeah. But we know that you got to get the work done first. Yeah. We like to enjoy ourselves and love to relax. The difference? I’m from SoCal. I’m Norcal. Ben’s more down to earth, not stressed out at all. I’m more responsible. Yeah, he is. I’m like the father. He makes his bed. He’s clean. He’s dirty. Yeah! I’m not as organized as he is and he’s definitely more of a people person. What about on the golf course, talk about

your games. Well, my ball striking has been one of the stronger part of my game, getting the ball of the tee and with my irons. But my putting and touch around the green is definitely something that I need to improve on. That’s funny cause we have the exact opposite games. I rely totally on my short game and putting. I could shank it around the course and still shoot 72. But when my ball striking’s on I will play well. Why Pacific? It was the best opportunity for me to succeed with golf. The coaches are passionate and determined

One’s pure NorCal.The other is as SoCal as you can get. They might singularily as different on the course as they are off it but these two under-classmen know how to feed off each other, they know how to work hard. and now... they’re learing how to win.

to win. The program is very focused on one goal. Getting better and winning. Ever wish you were right

handed? Nope. Not for a second. You know, cause it’s gotta be hard... Nope. So what are you each known for? What, you mean like nicknames? I’m D. Garc. With a C. Not Gark. Yeah, just call me Benny. Kinda leaning towards how

other people know you two... Oh, well probably that I’m pretty respectful, quiet... and that I’m a leader. Adults like me. Yeah,

you’ve got them fooled huh? (laughs) I’d say people know me for being involved in the community and be-ing a leader, just very involved, someone that works hard... Wait a second!! If we took a random survey of

Pacific students they’d say you were respect Yeah bro! He’s an eagle scout. Of course they would... Maybe they’d say that’s the guy that’s really white... Round out the dream foursome for me. You two... and any two other people for a

round of golf. Who are they? I’d have to play with Elizabeth Hurley! (laughs) I’d say probably Dane Cook, some-one funny... and Fred Couples. Ooh, that’s a good one. I’ll say Tiger Woods. Any golf superstitions? Yeah, I always have to have my clothes ironed. I can’t wear wrinkly stuff on the golf course. I think the better I look the better I play. How

bout you? Oh yeah...I don’t care. I’ll wear whatever. Anything goes I guess...
