began when trailers-on-flatcars were trans-ported over its line between the Twin Citiesand Fargo, N.D., early in 1954. That was theyear TOFC first gained wide acceptanceamong shippers.

Today, TOFC service is the biggest news inshipping and NP Piggyback has grown into atranscontinental operation spanning sevenNorthwest states. Northern Pacific initiatedPiggyback service on the North Pacific Coastbetween Seattle and Portland and, in Mon-tana, the Railway pioneered TOFC movementsof lumber.

NP has a ready stock of versatile equipmentto meet the demands of its ever-expandingPiggyback operation. Besides its own fleet ofspecially-equipped flatca rs and various typesof highway trailers, it has membership inTrailer Train Company, the nation's largestPiggyback car rental firm.

Northern Pacific Transport Company»amotor carrier subsidiary of the Railway~ sup-plements the program with widespread over-the-highway service in Montana, Washington,Oregon and Idaho.

Nation-wide service is available via NorthernPacific in connection with other rail lines.Direct interchange is made with connectinglinesatMinneapolis-St. Paul, Portland, Laurel,Mont., and Pasco, Wash.
