The Wave
Have you ever wondered if you could bond with someone even if you never met them? It has crossed my mind a couple of times. Let me give you a couple of examples. As most of you know I ride back and forth to West Chester six times a week for the last seven years. Several times a week as I ride to work I pass a fellow rider on a blue Harley with driving lights going the other way. We always see each other and wave. We have never talked, shook hands or even seen each other without our helmets on, yet we have a strong bond. I even have an “unofficial contest” with him to see who will be the first one to start driving a cage in the cold weather. I always win. One day I plan on waiting on the side of the ride and catch up to him and finally meet him. We have a special bond. Recently a PennDot crew has begun working on a overpass as you come down the ramp off the Commodore Barry Bridge. They are all dressed in heavy coveralls and are braced for the cold weather. One of the workers has the special job of holding the “slow” sign as you approach the work zone. At first when I passed him I would nod as I rode by. Now after several weeks we smile, wave and I give him a horn toot. Again we have a special bond. One day I'd like to stop and drop off some coffee and meet my friend. Any of these examples of bonding without ever meeting someone remind you of anything? None of us have ever met Jesus, yet we have a strong bond with him without ever meeting him. Imagine the day you get to finally meet Him. What will you say or do? I just wanted to get you thinking. Enjoy ! Submitted By Jim Mayhew

New Jersey Report
2014 was a busy year for Fast Lane in New Jersey we
helped out at the Mirock Drag racing series, the AMA
Pro Motorcycle races, the Harley Drags and the
American Historic Motorcycle Racing event. We also
made great inroads at the two major tracks in South
Jersey. At Atco Dragway we were invited to help at the
Harley Drags based upon our helping at the Mirock
event. When at New Jersey Motorsports Park, because
of our helping at races and bike nights, we were asked
to do race invocations. In doing this I was then asked to
join their Green Flag Committee. The Green Flag
Committee is a group of volunteers that help not only at
race events but also at all the benefit and humanitarian
events they hold. I can’t wait to see how far we get in
2015.
Technical Report: Helmet Ratings
Submitted by Jim Mayhew
Many of you may be familiar with the helmet safety ratings, Snell and DOT. Did you
know there is a third safety rating? ECE R22-05 is a new rating developed in Europe
and is the most common certification required by over 50 countries. More importantly,
it is recognized for all competition events by AMA, WERA, FIM, CCS, Formula USA
and MotoGP.
Do you know how they test helmets to see if they meet any of these safety ratings?
Well here comes your lesson. Testing begins with fitting a weighted headform
containing sensors that measure velocity and G-forces into the helmet. The helmet
slides down a track at high speed, usually 7.75 meters per second, and strikes an anvil,
the anvil is shaped differently depending on the certification. On impact the G-force
exerted on the headform is measured. The test is then repeated on the same impact
point to ensure the helmet can protect from multiple strikes to the same area. The shell
of the helmet is designed to absorb energy and the liner is designed to absorb impact.
The DOT (Department of Transportation) certification allows a maximum G-force of 250
g’s. The anvil used in this test is either shaped flat or like a “kerb” shape. The DOT
test favors a helmet that is more shock absorbent which falls in line with recent studies
that indicate absorbing the impact is more important then resisting the impact.
There are 2 different Snell certifications, the M2005 and the M2010. The M2005 is an
older certification and favors a more shock resistant helmet and the M2010 is the
newer standard and favors a more shock absorbent helmet. The M2005 standard
allowed an impact shock up to 300g’s and the M2010 allows a maximum of 275 g’s.
The Snell testing also uses an anvil shaped either like a ball or flat or like a ‘kerb”.
Both Snell certifications were recognized by the AMA for racing although they do not
recognize the M2005 since 2011.
The ECE R22-05 certification is the newest of all the certifications and as stated earlier
is recognized by most racing organizations. They favor the more impact absorbing
helmet that allows 275 g’s. Their testing also uses the flat anvil or one shaped like a
“kerb”.
I hope this information helps you when it comes time for you to purchase your next
helmet. However the most important decision you can make is to always wear one.
Peace be with you and Safe riding.
A Friend in Need…...
Submitted by
I have a friend and co-worker whose 2014 did not end so well. At the end of October a car
in his driveway caught fire and it spread to his garage, eventually burning his house down.
He and his wife lost everything. His dirt bike was in the garage and the only thing left was
the frame and the tools in his toolbox were melted together.
Several weeks later he was having a bad day at work and I told him he needed to enjoy
some two wheeled therapy. He shared that he’d bought another dirt bike but had no riding
gear so riding was out of the question. Just then I heard a voice in my heart, it said “Help out
a friend”. I knew what I must do. I contacted fellow members in the Light House Riders
chapter, members in New Jersey Fast Lane and fellow co-workers at Carousel Hyundai
trying to raise donations to purchase as much of a riding suit as possible. With the donations
received and some judicious purchases we were able to buy a helmet, jersey, MX pants,
gloves, goggles, socks and boots. On the day of our company Christmas party I carried in a
rather large box and placed it next to his desk. He choked up as he took off the lid and saw
what was inside. He was absolutely blown away! Since he received his gift he’s been able
to go riding several times. After each ride he’s come in to work the next day and has
thanked me and asked me to thank everyone else involved.
THANK YOU MEMBERS OF THE LIGHT HOUSE RIDERS, NEW JERSEY FAST LANE
and FELLOW WORKERS at CAROUSEL HYUNDAI!!!
