THE PEACE PEOPLEOn August 10, 1976, the driver of an IRA getaway

car was shot dead by a pursuing British Army patrol. The crashing car killed three young children, andgravely injured their mother, who had just picked upthe eldest from school.

The sheer senseless horror of the incident cutthrough the apathy and mutual recrimination into whichNorthern Ireland had sunk after 7 years of violence andsuffering. In the succeeding days and weeks tens ofthousands of people took part in rallies in NorthernIreland and elsewhere to express their abhorrence atthe continuing violence. They were led by MaireadCorrigan, the aunt of the dead children, by BettyWilliams and Ciaran McKeown, and they became theCommunity of the Peace People. Their philosophy, setout in the Declaration of the Peace People written byCiaran McKeown, is summed up as a commitment to workfor the creation of a just and peaceful society bynonviolent means. Mairead Corrigan and Betty Williamswere awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in December, 1977.

Mairead is the recipient of numerous honors andawards, including the Norwegian People's Prize, anhonorary doctorate from Yale University, and specialprizes from Trinity College (DC), St. Michael's College(VT), the College of NAW Rochp.l1e (NY), rtnd severalothers.

In September 1981, Mairead was married to JackieMaguire, widower of her sister Anne, who neverrecovered from the loss of her children and died in1979. In addition to the remaining three children fromthe earlier marriage --Mark, Joanne, and Mary Louise--Mairead and Jackie are the parents of John Francis, born in 1982, and Luke, born in 1984.

DECLARATIONof the Peace People

We have a simple message tor the world from thisMovement for Peace.

We want to live and love and build a just and peacefulsociety.

We want for our children, as we want for ourselves, ourlives at horne, at work and at ~lay, to be lives ofjoy and peace.

We recognize that to build such a :~ifedemands of allof us, dedication, hard work and courage.

We recognize that there are many problems in oursociety which are a source of conflict andviolence.

We recognize that every bullet fired and everyexploding bomb makes that work more difficult.

We reject the use of the bomb and the bullet and allthe techniques of violence.

We dedicate ourselves to working with our neighbors, near and far, day in and day out, to building thatpeaceful society in which the tragedies we haveknown are a bad memory and continuing warning.
