take? We are blessed with good
weather for the most part, and
the clothing, footwear, watches,
and various monitors available
represent the latest technology.
So what are we waiting for?
Robert Frost wrote about "a road
less traveled;" there is no place
in our daily planner for the
"exercise not taken!"
Second, these young
people are students getting an
education for life. Running and
walking are much more than a
sport or goal; together they serve
as a teacher, a social system, and
a provider of entertainment as
well. The curriculum begins with
courses in anatomy, physiology,
and medicine. We learn about
ourselves and such things as
cardiovascular endurance,
anaerobic threshold, oxygen
debt, target heart rate, plantar
faciitis, tendinitis, and pronation,
just to name a few. Schooling
continues in the principles of
training, recovery, rest,
stretching, tapering, pacing,
peaking, upper body strength,
and more. We learn about diet,
nutrition, carbo loading,
electrolyte replacement, and
hydration. We gain a better
understanding of goal setting,
self motivation, stress, failure,
visualization, rewards. There are
important lessons in planning,
time management, conflict
resolution, meeting challenges.
We don't have to be taught to
party after the race - that comes
naturally! And when you can
take a trip to another part of the
world, it is like icing on the cake.
Try it; you will like it.
Third, these runners are
team players. They each have
different abilities and they want
to do their best to help the team
win. They are all winners. The
first level of winning is
competing and completing what
they set out to do. By finishing
they have beaten everyone who
started but dropped out early, as
well as those who had not started
and never would. The second
level of winning is improving.
Going faster and going longer
doesn't require beating anyone
else, only a time or a distance.
The third and highest level of
winning is continuing after the
improvement stops as it surely
will if you run enough years.
Slower and shorter running still
beats no running at all. Winners
never quit; quitters never win.
This old slogan will mean much
more as one gets older. Compete
with yourself. Try for your own
best times and run at your own
best pace. That way no one can
beat you but yourself.
Fourth, these models
displayed the latest in clothing
and shoes that would provide
cooler weather comfort and
protection. From wind-blocking
to breathable to wicking to
reflective accents to pockets to
head-accessory anchors to water
resistance to thumbholes to
freedom of movement to comfort
to layering to standard shoes to
minimal constructed shoes to
colorful.....you name it and we
saw it! Check the weather, dress
accordingly, get out the door,
have fun, and bring health care
reform to a personal level. Do it
with your feet, not just your fork!

The promotion ad in the
October Pace Letter appeared as
follows: " Runner's Runway, a
fall fashion show presented by
"Uncle Joe" & McCoy Outdoor
and the Port City Pacers,
Thursday, October 27, 6:00 PM
at McCoy Outdoor. Come see
the latest trends in apparel,
shoes, & gadgets. Live models!
Refreshments will be served".
While disappointed with
attendance, the folks that did
attend were not disappointed in
what they saw and learned. Here
are some of the thoughts that
passed through my mind as Joe
described the apparel worn by
our vibrant young models.
First were the models
themselves: Zachary Sims, 12th
grade; Maggie Ferguson, 12th
grade; Lizzie Castillo, 9th grade;
Alice Phillips, 9th grade; and
Dan Drew, 12th grade. All are
members of St. Paul's Episcopal
cross country team and
exhibited a picture of youth,
health, and the future of our
sport. Their example caught my
eye as it might any
runner/walker who is keenly
aware of the benefits of a
regular exercise program. No
obesity or inactivity here! With
some 30 % of American adults
reporting no physical activity at
all, it is an indictment against
the men and women of our
society who know better, who
know the benefits of regular
exercise, who desire to be
healthy and live longer lives, yet
do nothing about it! What will it

COLD WEATHER
RUNNING
TIPS
Always follow the RRCA General Safety Guidelines
Leave the headphones at home. Your ears may help you avoid dangers your
eyes cannot see. Wet, wintery conditions may weaken tree limbs causing
them to fall. Hearing the crack before the fall may be the difference between
avoiding a falling branch or being tackled by a dead limb.
Avoid running on the roads in snowy conditions. Drivers have a decreased
ability to maneuver and stop.
Winter means fewer daylight hours. Wear bright-colored, reflective clothing
or a reflective vest so you are noticeable to area traffic. For added visibility,
wear a lightweight headlamp or flashing light.
Wear layers of clothing that will help you maintain your core body
temperature during the run but will keep you warm during warm-up and
cool-down phases.
Consider wearing traction devices on your shoes if sidewalks, trails or roads
have snow or ice cover.
If you drive to a running trail or route, leave a change of dry cloths and a
blanket in the car for emergency situations.
Stay alert and aware of your surroundings and the weather conditions.
Oncoming storms can quickly drop the temperature putting you at risk for
frostbite or hypothermia if you are caught wearing the wrong clothes.
Know where to find shelter on your route if the weather gets really bad.
Do not ignore shivering. It is an important first sign that the body is losing
heat, and you may be in danger of hypothermia.

SENIOR BOWL WINNING SENIORS
Shown are Bill Bowman, 68, Age Group Third; Will
Wright, 74, Age Group Second; David Jeffrey, 69,
Grand Masters Second. Bill is from Birmingham and
works for Doster Construction Company as a
Construction Manager for RSA on the complete
remodeling of the 34 story RSA BankTrust building
(formerly Am South tower-built in 1966) and the
home of the Moon Pie drop on New Year’s Eve. He is
living in Fairhope and has been enjoying the fine runs
in the Mobile and Baldwin County areas for a number
of months now. Since the project is scheduled to be
completed in early 2012, he has only a few more
months left to run with some of the best folks in the
country. Bill has enjoyed making new friends and
speaks highly of the races, the runners, and the race
management. Speak to Bill when you get a chance
and look for him if you run in the Birmingham area.
David Dutton, race director for the 2011 Hurricane
Run and Amber Ramsey with Crowder Gulf delivered
a $2500 check to Brad Cox for the Dauphin Island Fire
and Rescue. A $500 check was also given to Denise
Keaton for the Dauphin Island Sea Lab. Pictured

Ms. Marykara Imwalle
Port City Pacers
P O Box 6427
Mobile, AL 3660
Dear Ms. Imwalle:
On behalf of the board and staff of Bay Area Food Bank, I would like to thank the Port City
Pacers for the generous donation of 904 pounds of food from your fall food drive. This food will
help to feed numerous families and individuals throughout the holiday season. Your donation
will be used in part to support the food bank’s various nutrition programs and provide food
through our network of 590 partner agencies to help those struggling with hunger along the
Central Gulf Coast.
Last year, Bay Area Food Bank distributed over 15 million pounds of food throughout our 24-
county service area. The recent economic downturn has resulted in a 30% increase in requests
for food assistance. It has also impacted the availability of food and the associated costs to
secure it. This year, we plan to distribute 14 million pounds to help meet the increased needs.
Your generosity will help us accomplish that goal.
Bay Area Food Bank is a primary source in disaster relief operations being a first responder in
emergency disaster relief situations such as the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, the recent
tornadoes in north Alabama and hurricanes.
Needed more than ever, the continuing support from the Port City Pacers is deeply appreciated.
To find out more about Bay Area Food Bank’s efforts and to sign up on our email list, please go

Karla Gardner

Corporate Cup
By Will Wright
We have completed nine of the fifteen races
including the Turkey 10 Miler, the longest race on our
schedule in many years. There were 22 teams out of 30
having participants in the event for a total of 88
runners. Six state records were set for the distance, half
being Corporate Cup runners. It would be great to have
every team participate in this November test of
endurance!
Results of the Jingle Bell 5K have not been
finalized at this writing; standings below are based on
the first eight races where we have averaged 153
runners per race. Thank you for your great
participation. It has been a good year and we will
resume with the Panther Pride 5K in January, 2012.
Merry Christmas and a happy holiday season

STATE RECORDS SET
By Will Wright
Several are on a roll setting state records: Melanie Moore,
age 59, set records in the Saraland 8K (34:23), BayFest 5K
(21:21), and the Senior Bowl Charity Run 10K (43:00).
David Jeffrey captured a 10K record (41:33) for age 69 at
the Senior Bowl 10K and went to a 15K race in Huntsville
for 1:05:27 record there. Other records in the Saraland 8K
were Jon Bowie, age 38 (26:27); Amy Huff, age 40
(31:06); and Luise Mitchell, age 75 (52:37). Congrats to all.
State records continue to fall as six were set in the recent
Turkey 10 Miler. Greer Lauber set her first record at age 11
with a 1:31:54; others included Elinor Carter, age 51,
1:12:33, Melanie Moore, 60, 1:12:15, Courtney Cooper, 23,
1:05:42; John Brigham, 25, 51:34; and David Jeffrey, 69,

Frequent Runner Number By Peggy Olive
Do you participate in two of more local races produced by the Port City Pacers or Little
Red Hen? Do you get writer’s cramp when filling out applications for friends, family, and
multiple races? Want to save time when registering for a race? Do you want to reduce the
possibility of your name being skipped when the Grand Prix or Corporate Cup points are being
assigned? Have you ever noticed that your penmanship worsens as the closing of day of race
registration nears?
Apply for a Frequent Runner Number (FRN). It’s FREE. The mission of the FRN is to
reduce errors and save time. Once you have been assigned your unique FRN, all you will need
to do when registering for a race is fill in your last and first names, write your FRN on the
address line, mark your event, and sign the waiver. Yes, of course, you will still need to pay the
race entry fees. Give it a try. If you don’t want an FRN, or if you forget your FRN, no harm –
no foul – you can still fill in all the info as usual.
