Promotion Commotion By Will Wright
Hodgkin's lymphoma, leukemia,
uterus, liver, brain, kidney,
myeloma, bladder, cervix, and
stomach. For men they are lung,
prostate, colon & rectum,
pancreas, liver, leukemia,
esophagus, bladder, non-
Hodgkin lymphoma, kidney,
brain, stomach, skin, oral cavity
& pharynx, and larynx.
Here are a few comments
concerning the major cancers
and what we can do to dodge
them:
Lung - smoking dwarfs all other
causes, along with resulting
passive smoke and genetic
disposition. Death from this type
cancer is declining due to the
reduction in smoking that
typically goes along with
exercise.
Breast - obesity is now accepted
as an increasing risk factor.
Physical activity probably
reduces the risk of breast cancer.
Prostate - While nothing is
firmly established, diet seems to
have a significant impact on this
cancer. Studies indicate that
older men who regularly engage
in vigorous activities like
jogging or brisk walking had a
70% lower risk of this cancer
being lethal.
Colon & Rectum - diets rich in
fiber, grains, fruits and
vegetables are protective. Being
overweight or obese is clearly
associated with this cancer; thus
staying active can lower your
risk.
Pancreas - the only consistent
risk factors are age and tobacco,
but more recent studies have
found obesity raises the risk by
28%. Again, staying active to
keep weight down reduces the
risk.
Esophagus - The risk of
esophageal cancers goes up with
increasing body weight. A diet
rich in fruits and vegetables
seems to protect the esophagus.
In addition to diet and exercise,
screening tests are recommended
to aid in early detection.
Mammograms and self exams, a
fecal occult blood test, flexible
sigmoidoscopy, colonoscopy, a
digital rectal exam and PSA test,
and a pap test and pelvic exam
should be scheduled regularly
based on age and genetics.
Give priority to good eating and
exercise as aids to good health
and a longer life. Throw in some
multivitamins and checkups and
you will be looking for those
races with 75 and 80 year age
groups!
Speaking of health, 2011 was a
most trying year for me. While I
feel ok and am active, my annual
blood work revealed the
production of a "rogue" protein
and a reduced hemoglobin count.
My internist suggested I see an
oncologist last October; after
many tests I have been diagnosed
with a slow growing, rare,
incurable blood cancer called
Waldenstrom
Macroglobulinemia.

CANCER –
LOWER YOUR RISK NOW!
I have lost several friends to
cancer and have many others in
remission from the dreaded
disease. Cancer isn't inevitable
but the older we get, the more
likely it seems to occur. If you
have reached the age of 40, your
odds of getting some form of
cancer increase; current statistics
indicate one out of every two
men and one out of every three
women will be diagnosed with a
potential killer. Last year
571,950 cancer deaths occurred
in the US. You can't keep from
getting older but you can change
your lifestyle to reduce the risk
of developing many kinds of
cancer. An old adage came to
mind: "a fence at the top of the
cliff is far better than an
ambulance at the bottom of it."
In other words, let's try to
prevent it from happening.
In a recent health newsletter I
was interested in reading about
which cancers are most
common, which are most
deadly, and what we can do to
lower our risk. It was no surprise
to read that diet, weight, and
exercise are high on the list of
those things we need to manage
properly in our everyday living
to minimize the chance of
getting cancer. Those of us who
run and walk already practice a
more healthy lifestyle than our
non-exercising peers and are on
the right track for a longer life
and good health.
Leading cancer killers for
women in order from worst to
least are lung, breast, colon &
rectum, pancreas, ovary, non-

T-Shirt Quilts
So many people have dresser
drawers overflowing with t-shirts saved
from high school, college, playing
sports, going to concerts, races run,
graduation, vacations, political and
business occasions but don't know what
to do with them now. A memorable fix
to this problem is to have a keepsake
quilt made that will record these special
moments for generations to come; not
to mention the joy you will get from
remembering each shirt's special time.
I made my first t-shirt quilt
from running shirts that a wife sneaked
from her husband‟s prized stash. I was
so afraid he would come after me but
he loved it! He said it was the best
Christmas present she ever gave him.
Later, I made three quilts from Mary
Taylor's shirts. Many of you may
remember her from her 30+ years of
Azalea Trail Run races as well as other
races. She loved her quilts so much
that when she was sick she asked her
daughters to please use them as her
casket blanket because it was such a
happy part of her life. And they did.
This touched my heart.
From the first t-shirt quilt I
made about 25 years ago followed by
many more t-shirt quilts for loved ones
memorials, race car drivers, Harley and
Honda lovers, fish shirts and many
more; I was HOOKED with the love of
helping people save happy memories. I
consider it a huge honor to be entrusted
with this job. Please contact to design
your special quilt. We can decide on
your border color, hand tie or machine
quilting, cotton or flannel backing, etc.
to preserve your memories.

Running quotes to keep in mind when you need a little motivation or inspiration to keep
running. Post one on the fridge, your mirror, your computer or the dash board of your car
for a reminder of why you run.
"Every day is a good day when you run." -- Kevin Nelson
"You have to wonder at times what you're doing out there. Over the years, I've given myself a
thousand reasons to keep running, but it always comes back to where it started. It comes down to
self-satisfaction and a sense of achievement." -- Steve Prefontaine
"I always loved running...it was something you could do by yourself, and under your own power.
You could go in any direction, fast or slow as you wanted, fighting the wind if you felt like it,
seeking out new sights just on the strength of your feet and the courage of your lungs."
-Jesse Owens
"The will to win means nothing without the will to prepare."
-Juma Ikangaa, 1989 NYC Marathon winner
"In running, it doesn't matter whether you come in first, in the middle of the pack, or last. You
can say, 'I have finished.' There is a lot of satisfaction in that."
-Fred Lebow, New York City Marathon co-founder
"Running is the greatest metaphor for life, because you get out of it what you put into it."
--OprahWinfrey
"Racing teaches us to challenge ourselves. It teaches us to push beyond where we thought we
could go. It helps us to find out what we are made of. This is what we do. This is what it's all
about." -- PattiSue Plumer, U.S. Olympian
"Believe that you can run farther or faster. Believe that you're young enough, old enough, strong
enough, and so on to accomplish everything you want to do. Don't let worn-out beliefs stop you
from moving beyond yourself." -- John Bingham
"Whether you believe you can or believe you can't, you're probably right.” -- Henry Ford
"Remember the feeling you get from a good run is far better than the feeling you get from sitting
around wishing you were running." -- Sarah Condor
"Don't bother just to be better than your contemporaries or predecessors. Try to be better than
yourself." -- William Faulkner
"Keep varying the program. Your body will tell you what to do." -- Joan Benoit Samuelson

"Running long and hard is an ideal antidepressant, since it's hard to run and feel sorry for
yourself at the same time. Also, there are those hours of clear headedness that follow a long run."
-Monte Davis
"I had as many doubts as anyone else. Standing on the starting line, we're all cowards."
-Alberto Salazar, three-time winner of the NYC marathon
"What distinguishes those of us at the starting line from those of us on the couch is that we learn
through running to take what the days gives us, what our body will allow us, and what our will
can tolerate." -- Jimmy Carter
"Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss it you will land among the stars." -- -Les Brown
"Everyone who has run knows that it‟s most important value is in removing tension and allowing
a release from whatever other cares the day may bring." -- Jimmy Carter
"Anybody can be a runner. We were meant to move. We were meant to run. It's the easiest
sport." -- Bill Rodgers
"Mental will is a muscle that needs exercise, just like the muscles of the body."
-Lynn Jennings
"We may train or peak for a certain race, but running is a lifetime sport."
-Alberto Salazar
"There's no such thing as bad weather, just soft people." -- Bill Bowerman
"If you want to become the best runner you can be, start now. Don't spend the rest of your life
wondering if you can do it." -- -Priscilla Welch
"To get to the finish line, you'll have to try lots of different paths." -- - Amby Burfoot
"He who is not courageous enough to take risks will accomplish nothing in life."
- Muhammad Ali
"To know you are one with what you are doing, to know that you are a complete athlete, begins
with believing you are a runner." -- George Sheehan
"I often hear someone say I'm not a real runner. We are all runners, some just run faster than
others. I never met a fake runner." -- Bart Yasso
"We all have dreams. But in order to make dreams come into reality, it takes an awful lot of
determination, dedication, self-discipline, and effort." -- Jesse Owens

You can check it out on the internet if
you want to learn more, but deadly
symptoms have resulted on average
anywhere from 5 to 20 years after
diagnosis. Since higher protein and
anemia are all that have been detected
thus far, I am just watching it with
blood checks every 3 months. My first
3-month check was Jan. 20, of this
year, and the protein had almost
doubled. My doctor wanted to start
me on a drug but I wanted to go
another 3 months of waiting and
watching since I did not have any bad
symptoms. As the protein increases,
my blood will thicken and can lead to
vision problems, attacks on kidneys,
liver, and energy. I am reading more
about it on the internet and may have
had the disease for 6 to 10 years
already. I will get another check on
April 27 and go from there. I am
trusting God for the 20 year span and
could die with it and not from it. I
believe sincerely that all my running
has given me some protection; my
short term goal is to be running in the
75 -99 age group later this year! I
would appreciate your prayers and
any knowledge you might have of this
rare malady.

Frequent Runner Number By Peggy Olive
Do you participate in two of more local races produced by the Port City Pacers or Little
Red Hen? Do you get writer‟s cramp when filling out applications for friends, family, and
multiple races? Want to save time when registering for a race? Do you want to reduce the
possibility of your name being skipped when the Grand Prix or Corporate Cup points are being
assigned? Have you ever noticed that your penmanship worsens as the closing of day of race
registration nears?
Apply for a Frequent Runner Number (FRN). It‟s FREE. The mission of the FRN is to
reduce errors and save time. Once you have been assigned your unique FRN, all you will need
to do when registering for a race is fill in your last and first names, write your FRN on the
address line, mark your event, and sign the waiver. Yes, of course, you will still need to pay the
race entry fees. Give it a try. If you don‟t want an FRN, or if you forget your FRN, no harm –
no foul – you can still fill in all the info as usual.
