Widelyknownas“ShanghaiPierce”,hewasoneoftheearlyTexastraildriversnorthintoKansas.HissouthTexasLonghornswerepopularlyknownas“sealions”.ThesealionlabelcamefromthefactthathiscattlewereraisednearthecoastofsouthTexas.HisoutfitwasthefirsttoimportBrahmacattleintothiscountry.Heownedlargelandholdingsandmanycattle.Bythetimehediedhehadaccumulatedsome20,000acresinadditiontootherproperty.AlargemarblestatueofhimmarkshisgraveintheHawleyCemeterynearBlessing,TX.Hediedin1900.

Born1832,OneidaupstateNY,movedtoIllinoisforhishealth-firstChicagothenin1857toCreston,IL.Hewasaschoolteacher,carpenterturnedbuilderandintheelevatorandgrainbusinesswhileheaccumulatedland.HeestablishedtheWoodlawnherdin1881withthreefemalesandabull(Rio)importedfromScotland.HebredandshowedBlackWoodlawntothe1902Internationalchampionship.Hebecamealeadingbreedsire.WoodlawnproducedAdvance,thefirstInternationalGrandChampionsteer(1900).The25montholdweighed1430poundsandsoldfor$1.50perpound.“B.R.”wasadirectorandvicepresidentoftheAmericanAngusAssn;wasactiveinthefoundingoftheInternationalLiveStockExpositionandservedasdirectoruntilhisdeathin1909attheageof77.HewasthefirstAngusbreedertohangintheclub.

PresidentofArmourandCo1923-1932.HesucceededJ.OgdenArmour.Born(1873-1932)Peoria,IL,hecompletedhiseducationinabusinesscollegeandenteredtheemployofE.GobelandSonsandbecameatravelingsalesmanforthelocalmeatpackers.AftertwoyearsasmanageroftheWesternMeatCoofSanFrancisco,hemovedtothecarroutedepartmentofArmourinChicago,dressedbeef,thenmanagerofthelambdepartment,director,vicepresident1914andpresident1923.DuringWWI,allmeatsalestothegovernmentandourEuropeanallieswereunderhisdirectionandaftertheArmisticehewasinchargeofallforeignbusinessforArmour.Duringhispresidency,Armourhadgrownto60,000employees,500branchhouses,20packingplantswhere15millionanimalswereutilizedtoproduce$1,000,000,000worthoffoodandby-products. Heservedontheboardofnumeroussubsidiariesofthecorporationandcivicorganizations.

Dr.RichardLWillhamwasborn in1932–B.S. inAnimalScience,OklahomaState1954–MSAnimalBreeding,IowaState1955afteramilitarytour,includingKorea,returnedtoIowaStateforhisPhD,1960–wenttoOklahomaState1963andreturnedtoIowastatein1966untilretirement,1997.Aprolificwriterandresearcher,WillhamdevelopedandpromotedEPD’s(ExpectedProgenyDifferences)asaselectiontool.Itiswidelyusedinbeefcattleselection.He wrote the Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) guidelines on National Dire EvaluationleadingtothecurrentNationalGeneticEvaluationprogram.Heisnotedasaclassactteacherandmotivatorofstudents.Forty-sevengraduatethesisordissertationscarryDr.Willham’sendorsement.Hisintriguewithartasitrelatestolivestockisscholarlyshowninhis“CenturiesofFascination:ArtAboutLivestock”displayintheIowaStateBrunnierArtMuseum;andhisbook“TheLegacyofAStockman.” Heisco-authoroftheS&Shistoryinthisedition. Hisclass“OurLivestockHeritage”isstilltaughtatIowaStateandColoradoState.In1954hemarriedEstherBurkhart.Hewasinductedin2004.

President of the Montana Wool Growers’ Association for a third of a century. Also VicePresidentoftheNationalWoolGrowers’Association,andastatesenator.BornAppanooseCo,IA(1856-1938)studiedintheStateNormalSchool,Kirksville,MO.For6yearshefarmedinthesummerandtaughtschoolinthewinter.In1882hehitchedapairofmulestoawagonandheadedwest.Seventy-ninedayslaterhesettledatDeerLodge,MTandhomesteadedaquartersectionsixmilesnorthoftown.HeeventuallybecamepartnerswithPeterPauly(WilliamsandPauly)andtheranchgrewto30,000acresofpatentedland,handling20,000headofsheepannually.Theywerenotedasbreeders,importersandexportersofRambouilletsheep.Theyalsohadaherdof300purebredShorthorncattle.AMilwaukeeshippingstationwas close by the ranch. Senator Williams was president of Cochrell Implement Co andpresidentoftheDeerLodgeBankandTrustCo.
WILSON,JAMES
Secretary of Agriculture for three successive cabinets of Presidents McKinley, Rooseveltand Taft. Born in Ayrshire, Scotland 1835 and came to America at age 16. His parentsimmigratedtoTamaCo,IA.EducatedatIowaCollege,Grinnell,engagedinfarming,electedtothreetermstotheIowaAssembly,maderegentofStateUniversityofIAandwaselectedtocongressin1873.In1890hewasappointedDirectoroftheAgrExpStationandprofessoratIAAgrCollege(ISU)andheldthispositionuntilPresidentMcKinleycalledhimtoserveinhiscabinet.Retiredin1913,Traer,IAwhereheparticipatedinanumberofnotablemovementsaimedtowardsdisseminatingagriculturalknowledge.SoprominentwerehisservicestheUniversityofWisconsin,CornellandMcGillUniversity,MontrealallhonoredhimwithLLDdegrees.Hediedin1920.
WILSON,THOMASE.
BornatLondon,Ontarioin1868ofScottishdescent,hesettledinChicago,IL.In1890hejoinedthestaffofMorrisandCompanywherehewaselectedvicepresidentin1906. HesucceededEdwardMorrisaspresidentin1913.In1916hejoinedSulzbergerandSons,andthatyearthefirmwasrenamedWilsonandCompany.HeservedasthefirstpresidentoftheInstituteofAmericanMeatPackers.HebredmanyoutstandingShorthornsandClydesdalesonhisEdellynFarm,whichwaslocatedatWilson,IL.HeservedasadirectoroftheInternationalLivestockExpositionandpresidentoftheOklahomaCityStockYardsCompany.

Abrilliantagriculturaljournalist,farmerandlecturerwhodidmuchtopopularizethegrowingofalfalfaonAmericanfarms.HealsowasastrongproponentforfarmflocksintheMidwest.BornHinsdale,NY(1861-1915),atage6settledwithfamilyonafarmnearMechanicsburg,OH.EducatedElmiraAcademy,NY.Workedonfather’sfarm,wentwestin1886,workedasacowboyonRangeValleyRanchonGreenRiverinUtah,becameforemanandpartowner.Hereturnedtohomefarmwithbrothersraisingsheepandgrowingalfalfa.Knownas‘AlfalfaJoe’hewroteAlfalfaFarminginAmerica.Helecturedwidelyatinstitutesandcolleges,wroteforCountryGentlemanandOhioCultivator.In1896hejoinedtheBreeders’Gazettestaffandtraveledextensively.HisbooksincludeSheepFarminginAmerica,MeadowsandPasturesandInForeignFields.

DirectorofBeefCattleResearch,USRangeLivestockExperimentStation(USRLES)inMilesCity,MTandlaterheadofthestation.HedevelopedtheLineOnestrainofHerefordsandwasoneoftheindustry’sforemostproponents,researchersanddevelopersofperformancetesting.Born on the family ranch (1916) Willow Creek, MT, earned BS and MS (1939) in AnimalBreeding Montana State; PhD from Univ. of MN in 1953. Following a three year tour inWWIIasanAirForcenavigator,he joinedUSRLES,becameBeefCattleBreedingDirector,wherehemademajorcontributionsintheselectionandimportationsofcontinentalbreedstotheUSandCanada.HeistherecipientofnumeroushighhonorsincludingASASFellow,USDASuperiorServiceAward,BIFResearchPioneerAward.Portraithungin1991.

HaroldF.WorkmanwasbornonafamilyfarminLivingstonCounty,KY.Itwasthebeginningofalifetimeofachievementsinlivestockagriculture,farmrelatedorganizations,expositionmanagementandgovernmentservices.AftergraduationfromtheUniversityofKentuckywithadegreeinAnimalScience(1969)andfiveyearswiththeKy.DeptofAgriculture,DivisionsofShow&Fairs,hewaschosentomanageafallLivestockExpoattheKentuckyExpositionCenter,(KEC).ItbecametheNorthAmericanInternationalLivestockExposition,NAILE,thenation’slargestall-breedpurebredlivestockexpositionattractingmorethan20,00entriesandvisitorseachyearandgeneratingmorethan$15millionannuallyineconomicimpact.AftertheChicagoInternationalclosedin1975,HaroldleaagroupofcommunityandlivestockleaderstonegotiatemovingtheSaddleandSirloinportraitgallerytoKEC.Thegallerywasmovedin1977andtheword“International”becameapartoftheLouisvilleExposition.Workman’sleadershipskillsareevidencedasPresidentandCEOoftheKentuckyStateFairBoardwhichmanagestheKYExpositionCenter,andtheKYInternationalConventionCenter.Hisportraitwasinductedin2003,theClub’s100thAnniversary.
