S&S PORTRAIT COLLECTION PAGE 98 PABST, CAPT. FREDERICK Born in Nicolaureith, Germany in 1836, he immigrated with his family to Milwaukee, WI at the age of twelve. He served as a bellboy and a cabin boy, and at the age of 21, he was made captain of the lakes steamer Sunbeam. He married into a brewing family and soon took over the management of Philip Best and Company, which, in 1889 was renamed Pabst Brewing Company. In 1870 he purchased the 200-acre farm, Wauwatosa, in Wisconsin, to which in 1885 he imported his first Percheron horses. He also bred Standardbred and American Saddle Horses on this farm. He became one of the leading Percheron breeders of the United States PABST, FREDERICK Noted Holstein breeder and Master Farmer of Wisconsin. Born 1869 in Milwaukee, he attended Michigan Military Academy and Schwartz Brewing Academy, NY. He progressed from washing kegs to president and chairman of the Board of Pabst Brewing Co. In 1906 he purchased a sizeable farm near Oconomowoc and built a home on the lake. He bred Hackneys and Percherons, then later established a Holstein herd. The high-producing herd was built around All-Americans in the diary field and Pabst named sires command great respect in Holstein pedigrees past and present. Pabst Farm, Inc. became virtually self sufficient, raising their own feed and manufacturing and merchandising their milk products. He was a director of the Holstein-Friesian Assn for many years. The University of Wisconsin recognized him during Farm and Home Week for his outstanding work developing Holsteins. PALMER, FOSTER C. Advertising manager of the Drovers Journal and director of the purebred field staff of the Corn Belt Farm Dailies. During his 52 years with the organization, he hired and trained many who became the future leaders of the purebred industry including breed secretaries, sale managers, auctioneers, farm and herd managers, breeders and publication personnel. He was widely known among the leading purebred breeders and was respected and sought after as a confidant and advisor for he championed the integrity of the business. Born in Kansas City, Missouri (1888-1979), he began his career in livestock publishing with the Kansas City Drovers Telegram before moving on to the Chicago Drovers Journal. The industry considered him the “Dean” of purebred advertising. The Palmer portrait was presented in 1964. PEARSON, DR. LEONARD Dean of the School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. Born Evansville, IN (1868-1909) received BS at Cornell, VMD 1890 at University of Pennsylvania, Professor of Veterinary Medicine University of Pennsylvania and Dean 1897. He was a leader of the control of infectious diseases and was the first in America to use tuberculin as a diagnosis of tuberculosis in cattle. Became state of Pennsylvania veterinarian in 1895; was Secretary of State Livestock Sanitary Board; president of American Veterinary Med Assn.; member of Philadelphia Board of Health. He was editor of Veterinary Magazine. He died in 1909.

ProfessorofAnimalHusbandryattheUniversityofMinnesotaandauthorofseverallivestocktextbooks.BorninKeokuk,IA(1885-1949)hereceivedhisBSatIowaStateandstayedonasaninstructor.HiseducationalcareertookhimtoManitobaAgriculturalCollege,NorthDakotaExtension Service and in 1918 to the University of Minnesota where in 1921 he becameChiefoftheDivisionofAnimalHusbandry.Underhistenure,experimentsonbreedingandfeedinglivestockwereexpanded.Outstandingflocks,herdsandstudsweredeveloped.A1947AnimalHusbandrybuildingoncampusbearshisname.HewasanactivedirectorofMinnesotaLivestockBreedersAssn.andwasinvolvedinyouthworkincluding4-HandFFA.In1941heservedaspresidentoftheAmericanSocietyofAnimalScience.In1948America’slivestockproducerssubmittedhisportraittotheSaddleandSirloingallery.

Chairman or President of the National Western Stock Show for over 30 years. After three yearsin the USNR, Lt. Petry joined his father and they “built downtown Denver”. Born 1834, Little Compton, R.I. He arrived in Indianola, TX in 1854 by way of VA. Widelyknownas“ShanghaiPierce”,hewasoneoftheearlyTexastraildriversnorthintoKansas.HissouthTexasLonghornswerepopularlyknownas“sealions”.ThesealionlabelcamefromthefactthathiscattlewereraisednearthecoastofsouthTexas.HisoutfitwasthefirsttoimportBrahmacattleintothiscountry.Heownedlargelandholdingsandmanycattle.Bythetimehediedhehadaccumulatedsome20,000acresinadditiontootherproperty.AlargemarblestatueofhimmarkshisgraveintheHawleyCemeterynearBlessing,TX.Hediedin1900.

PIERCE,BLANFORDR.

Born1832,OneidaupstateNY,movedtoIllinoisforhishealth-firstChicagothenin1857toCreston,IL.Hewasaschoolteacher,carpenterturnedbuilderandintheelevatorandgrainbusinesswhileheaccumulatedland.HeestablishedtheWoodlawnherdin1881withthreefemalesandabull(Rio)importedfromScotland.HebredandshowedBlackWoodlawntothe1902Internationalchampionship.Hebecamealeadingbreedsire.WoodlawnproducedAdvance,thefirstInternationalGrandChampionsteer(1900).The25montholdweighed1430poundsandsoldfor$1.50perpound.“B.R.”wasadirectorandvicepresidentoftheAmericanAngusAssn;wasactiveinthefoundingoftheInternationalLiveStockExpositionandservedasdirectoruntilhisdeathin1909attheageof77.HewasthefirstAngusbreedertohangintheclub.

He was former president of the American Shorthorn Breeders Association and the mostinfluentialbreederofShorthorns inthePacificNorthwestofhistime. Bornin Indiana,asaboyhewenttotheFarWestandassembledalargeparceloflandnearSprague,WAandestablishedtheHerculesStockFarmunderhismanagement.AherdofpedigreedShorthornswasestablishedin1915andatonetimenumbered1500breedingfemales,thelargestpurebredShorthornherdintheworldatthattime.RothrockpurchasedtheCanadianbullGainfordPerfectionin1915,a“Landmark”sireofhistime,tomatetohistopfemales.Hisherdwasanurseryseedstockforavastterritorythatatthattimewasnotadequatelysupplied.Theheartoftheherdwasdispersedin1934duringthedepressionandaveraged$146.85.

Hisfatherdiedin1857andheworkedonlocalfarmsuntil1864,whenhejoinedbrotherLeonardandtwocompanionswithfour-horsehitchandwagontoMeadowCreek(nowMadisonCo,MT).Heworkedasafreighter,withbrothersestablishedtheirownfreightcompanyandgotintostockraising.HewaschartermemberoftheInternationalLivestockExpositionBoard(1892),activememberoftheMontanaStockGrowersAssn.andMontanaWoolGrowersAssn.andreceivedunusualhonors frombothAssns. In1912hewaschosenhonorarypresident for lifebytheWoolGrowers. In later years he was active on the Federal Reserve and Union Bank and TrustBoardsandmanycivicorganizationsinHelena.Atthetimeofhisdeath,SiebenLivestockwasoneofthelargestsheepconcernsinthestate.

FormanyyearsemployedinpublicrelationsbySwiftandCompanywherehedidyeomanserviceindevelopingabetterlivestockproducersandcollegelivestockstaffsunderstandingbetween of the meat packing industry and its problems. His portrait was added to thecollectionin1955.

WATERS,HENRYJACKSON

He was president of Kansas State Agriculture College (KSU). Born Center, MO (1865-1925), he earned his BSA at University of Missouri in 1886. He remained as instructor attheuniversityfortwoyearsandin1890hewasgiventhechairoftheExpStaofPAStateUniversity. Missourirecalledhimin1895tobedeananddirectorUniversityExpSta. Hewas granted leave to study animal nutrition at the University of Leipzig and Zurich. HebecamepresidentofKansasStateCollegein1909andleftin1917tobecomeeditoroftheWeekly Kansas City Star where he continued to spread his philosophy of rural life in theweeklycolumns.Hisinfluenceextendedbeyondhiscollegeworktomanynationalandstateappointments,leadershipinprofessionalsocietiesandtheseveralagriculturetextbooksheauthored.

WATSON,HUGH

ThefirstgreatimproverofAnguscattleinScotland.Bornin1789atMeigle,Forfar,ScotlandhebecameatenantatKeillorin1808andremainedthereuntilhisdeathin1865.Hestartedwithsixcowsandabull,allblack,andby1815seriouslyundertookthebusinessofbreedingbettercattlebyinbreedingandcarefulselection.Hismostfamouscow,“OldGrannie,”livedtobe36yearsoldandtohave25calves.AtPerthin1829heshowedalltheblackcattlebutone.Hewasnotedforhisaccuratejudgment.

AmasterEnglishflockmasterofthemid19thcentury.BornatCambridge,England,atenantfarmer,hebeganbreedingsheepin1821.Heboughtthebestanimalsavailableandpracticedcarefulmatingandselection.HewaslargelyresponsiblefordevelopingtheSouthdowntothepointthatitbecametheoutstandingbreedofmuttonsheepinBritainandthroughouttheworld.By1846hewasleasingout200ramsannually.Hisflockwasdispersedin1862butthelandlord,Mr.C.Adeane,continuedtobreedexcellentSouthdowns.HealsobredShorthornsfrom1838untilhisdeathin1862.

President of the Montana Wool Growers’ Association for a third of a century. Also VicePresidentoftheNationalWoolGrowers’Association,andastatesenator.BornAppanooseCo,IA(1856-1938)studiedintheStateNormalSchool,Kirksville,MO.For6yearshefarmedinthesummerandtaughtschoolinthewinter.In1882hehitchedapairofmulestoawagonandheadedwest.Seventy-ninedayslaterhesettledatDeerLodge,MTandhomesteadedaquartersectionsixmilesnorthoftown.HeeventuallybecamepartnerswithPeterPauly(WilliamsandPauly)andtheranchgrewto30,000acresofpatentedland,handling20,000headofsheepannually.Theywerenotedasbreeders,importersandexportersofRambouilletsheep.Theyalsohadaherdof300purebredShorthorncattle.AMilwaukeeshippingstationwas close by the ranch. Senator Williams was president of Cochrell Implement Co andpresidentoftheDeerLodgeBankandTrustCo.

Secretary of Agriculture for three successive cabinets of Presidents McKinley, Rooseveltand Taft. Born in Ayrshire, Scotland 1835 and came to America at age 16. His parentsimmigratedtoTamaCo,IA.EducatedatIowaCollege,Grinnell,engagedinfarming,electedtothreetermstotheIowaAssembly,maderegentofStateUniversityofIAandwaselectedtocongressin1873.In1890hewasappointedDirectoroftheAgrExpStationandprofessoratIAAgrCollege(ISU)andheldthispositionuntilPresidentMcKinleycalledhimtoserveinhiscabinet.Retiredin1913,Traer,IAwhereheparticipatedinanumberofnotablemovementsaimedtowardsdisseminatingagriculturalknowledge.SoprominentwerehisservicestheUniversityofWisconsin,CornellandMcGillUniversity,MontrealallhonoredhimwithLLDdegrees.Hediedin1920.

WILSON,THOMASE.

BornatLondon,Ontarioin1868ofScottishdescent,hesettledinChicago,IL.In1890hejoinedthestaffofMorrisandCompanywherehewaselectedvicepresidentin1906. HesucceededEdwardMorrisaspresidentin1913.In1916hejoinedSulzbergerandSons,andthatyearthefirmwasrenamedWilsonandCompany.HeservedasthefirstpresidentoftheInstituteofAmericanMeatPackers.HebredmanyoutstandingShorthornsandClydesdalesonhisEdellynFarm,whichwaslocatedatWilson,IL.HeservedasadirectoroftheInternationalLivestockExpositionandpresidentoftheOklahomaCityStockYardsCompany.
